The commissioner was yet again sleeping during work hours when the door to the Sorent Police Department was flung open with a loud bang, startling him upright in his chair.
“I-I was not asleep, Chief!” he cried, frantically patting his hair down and trying to make it seem like he hadn’t just woken up. The commissioner dreaded these evening visits from Kyle Leonard, who had taken to visiting every day to scrutinize his operations. The chief from the capital was so vastly superior to the head of the small police force of Sorent that the commissioner feared even looking him in the eyes.
Chief Leonard is even more finicky than the rumors say. The commissioner squeezed his eyes shut, anticipating another bout of scolding from the chief.
To his surprise, Kyle did not call him out for sleeping on the job. “Move aside.”
“Excuse me?” The commissioner quickly scurried backward, hastening out of Kyle’s way.
