Though the process was arduous, Yūichirō Hyakuya ultimately resisted the demon's influence, as did Shihō Kimizuki.
Upon returning to the real world, they had obtained the power of the demons.
Yūichirō Hyakuya's Cursed Gear was a long sword named Asuramaru; Shihō Kimizuki's was a pair of connected short swords called Kiseki-o.
Shinoa Hīragi was amazed that they had resisted the Black Demon-level demons, as they were the strongest Cursed Gear, and their inhabiting demons possessed the strongest mental influence.
However, only those two had awakened. Yoichi Saotome remained unconscious, trapped in the illusion. Sayuri Hanayori had previously stated that Yoichi Saotome might not be able to withstand the Black Demon's influence, and it seemed she was right, though Guren Ichinose had chosen to believe otherwise.
"Yoichi hasn't woken up yet?" Approaching Aoki and the others, Yūichirō Hyakuya looked at the unconscious Yoichi Saotome.
Seconds later, a green arrow shot from Yoichi Saotome's position, splitting the demonic face in two.
Everyone's gaze turned towards Yoichi Saotome. Guren Ichinose sighed, looking troubled. "Ah, so Yoichi's power wasn't sufficient. But a two-thirds success rate in challenging the Black Demons is quite ideal."
"What's going on?" Yūichirō Hyakuya wondered.
Then Yoichi Saotome spoke.
"Humans have one, two, three, four, five… and everyone has Cursed Gear? That's why humans are troublesome."
Yoichi Saotome, his eyes now strange and horns sprouting from his head, stood above them, his aura drastically changed. A black and green longbow appeared in his hand.
Guren Ichinose slapped his forehead, looking exasperated. "Fine. You've obtained Cursed Gear. Here's your first mission as members of the Moon Demon Company."
Guren Ichinose pointed to Yoichi Saotome above. "Yūichirō, Kimizuki, a ghoul has appeared. Take care of him."
Yoichi Saotome aimed his bow at them, a sinister smile on his face. "Dangerous humans, all shall become my prey."
A green arrow shot out, splitting into multiple arrows before impact, causing a wide-range explosion.
As the smoke cleared, Guren Ichinose had effortlessly blocked the powerful attack, while Yūichirō Hyakuya and Shihō Kimizuki lay on the ground, affected by the blast.
Aoki and Shinoa Hīragi, standing further away, were unharmed. Aoki stared intently at Yoichi Saotome, his expression unreadable.
The demon-possessed Yoichi Saotome aimed again at Yūichirō Hyakuya and Shihō Kimizuki.
Aoki moved.
He threw several kunai at Yoichi Saotome. Yoichi Saotome changed his aim, firing an arrow that shattered into pieces, destroying the kunai.
"Sword." Aoki extended an arm, and Yoriichi Type Zero materialized in his hand. He'd only recently learned that Cursed Gear could be summoned.
"Yoichi, don't blame me." Aoki leaped towards Yoichi Saotome.
Yoichi Saotome fired a green arrow.
"Devouring Breath, First Form: Demon Devour!"
A black wave of sword energy sliced through the air, creating a vortex that swallowed the arrow as Aoki continued his assault.
Yoichi Saotome fired three arrows.
Aoki tossed a Flying Raijin kunai, which passed between the arrows.
He appeared before Yoichi Saotome, holding the kunai in one hand and Yoriichi Type Zero in the other, ready to strike.
"Aoki! Don't kill Yoichi! He's our comrade!" Yūichirō Hyakuya shouted.
Aoki paused, his eyes transforming into three-tomoe Sharingan, a faint light emanating as they focused on Yoichi Saotome's eyes.
"Sharingan, Genjutsu!"
The genjutsu took effect, Yoichi Saotome's body stiffening. His horns disappeared, and his eyes returned to normal.
He was restored.
"No way," Shinoa Hīragi exclaimed in shock. Once possessed, becoming a ghoul, recovery was almost impossible, especially from a Black Demon.
Guren Ichinose, however, was impressed. "Amazing! Restoring a ghoul's sanity… worthy of my attention."
"What… what happened?" Yoichi Saotome looked at his hands, confused. In the illusion, he'd been defeated by the demon, but another power intervened, indirectly allowing him to overcome the demon and gain its recognition.
Aoki reappeared beside Shinoa Hīragi, having left a Flying Raijin kunai behind before charging at Yoichi Saotome.
He'd brought Yoichi Saotome down with him, noticing the ghoul's fear of heights.
"Yoichi!" Yūichirō Hyakuya ran over, relieved. Yoichi Saotome's recovery was the best possible outcome.
"Yūichirō?" Yoichi Saotome was bewildered by Yūichirō Hyakuya's unusual demeanor.
Yūichirō Hyakuya explained, "You were possessed and became a ghoul. Guren Ichinose was going to have me and Kimizuki eliminate you, but Aoki saved you."
Yoichi Saotome was stunned, then thanked Aoki.
"Thank you, Aoki. My strength wasn't enough. Without you, I'd be completely consumed."
"Don't thank me. I simply did something that benefited neither of us. It was convenient," Aoki said nonchalantly, hands in his pockets.
