Chapter 7 - Shadows and Sparks

The guild hall of Fairy Tail was alive with its usual cacophony—laughter, cheers, clanging of tankards, and the occasional shout of a challenge. Yet beneath the familiar din, an undercurrent of tension hummed tonight.

Kairo pushed open the heavy wooden doors, his footsteps echoing on the worn stone floor. Even as he entered, a faint shimmer of shadowflame flickered at his fingertips, the dark embers whispering their heat in the cool air. The magic was restless, a reflection of his anticipation.

The chatter dimmed momentarily as dozens of guild members turned their heads toward the entrance. Kairo's sharp eyes scanned the crowd. Near the doorway, a gathering had formed—a tight cluster of faces whispering with curiosity and something sharper: unease.

He strode forward, parting the crowd with a calm but commanding presence. The noise buzzed back to life behind him, but his attention zeroed in on the figure standing at the centre of the gathering.

Tall and imposing, the newcomer was cloaked in dark robes that seemed to drink in the light. His presence was like an icy gale—crisp and cutting through the warmth of the hall. Sharp eyes glinted beneath the hood, scanning the room with surgical precision.

Kairo felt a chill brush his skin, but it was not from the room's temperature. It was something colder, raw, calculating, and utterly unfriendly.

A voice broke through the whispers. "Mage from Sabertooth Guild," one member muttered. "Name's Kaelen Frost."

The name struck Kairo like a sudden frostbite. Sabertooth was infamous—a rival guild with its fierce reputation. And Kaelen? Kairo had heard rumours. A prodigy with ice magic so refined it was said to slice through steel like paper.

His system chimed softly in his mind, an electronic voice breaking through his thoughts.

『New NPC Encounter: Kaelen Frost (Rival Mage)』

Affinity: Hostile (Sabertooth Guild)

Magic Type: Ice Manipulation

Power Level: Comparable to current level

Kairo's heart quickened. This was no ordinary visitor. Kaelen was here for a reason. A challenge, perhaps, or something more.

Kaelen's gaze locked onto Kairo with an intensity that sent a shiver down his spine. "You must be the Shadowflame mage they've been talking about," the icy voice said, low and mocking. "Quite the show-off, aren't you?"

Kairo met the stare without flinching, flames flickering darker along his fingers. "Better to be blazing than hiding behind frozen walls."

A ripple of laughter ran through the onlookers, but Kaelen's smirk only grew sharper, colder. The tension between them was palpable—two elemental forces locked in a silent war before any magic had even been unleashed.

Just then, Master Makarov's voice cut through the brewing storm. "Enough," the small but authoritative figure commanded, stepping forward with a firm hand raised. "Kaelen is here on official business—a joint mission between Fairy Tail and Sabertooth. You two will be working together. Cooperation, not conflict."

Kairo's jaw clenched beneath his calm exterior. Work with a rival? The thought gnawed at his pride and instincts. But the guild master's word was law.

"Fine," Kairo said tersely. "For now."

Kaelen gave a curt nod, but the flicker of rivalry in his eyes remained unextinguished.

Later that afternoon, the training yard was a battlefield. The sun hung low in the sky, casting long shadows over the cracked stone and worn grass.

Kairo stood opposite Kaelen, muscles coiled and ready. The air between them seemed to crackle—not just with magic, but with the weight of expectations, pride, and the unspoken challenge simmering beneath the surface.

Kaelen raised his hand, frost crystallising on his fingertips, cold tendrils curling like vipers ready to strike. "Show me what Shadowflame can do," he said, voice laced with disdain.

Kairo's eyes narrowed, shadowflame flickering alive in response. "With pleasure."

In a heartbeat, Kairo unleashed a bolt of shadowflame, a swirl of dark fire that hissed as it cut through the air. Kaelen responded instantly, summoning a sharp ice shard that collided with the fiery projectile.

The impact exploded in a cloud of steam, hissing and swirling around them. Sparks danced at the edges of shadow and ice, a dazzling display of elemental power.

Their duel intensified, each attack pushing the other to the edge of their strength. Kairo twisted, dodged, and countered, the dark flames licking out with precision and fury. Kaelen's ice was razor-sharp, cutting arcs of frost that sought to bind or pierce.

"You wield fire like a weapon," Kaelen murmured through gritted teeth, eyes glinting. "But remember this—cold cuts deeper than flame."

Kairo smirked, feeling the heat rise inside him, fuelled by pride and the sting of the challenge. "Maybe so. But fire consumes everything in its path."

Calling upon his recent training, Kairo summoned his upgraded technique—Bolt Burn—a concentrated surge of shadowflame energy that crackled with enhanced power. He launched it with a speed and force that even Kaelen struggled to match.

The battle ended in a stalemate. Both stood breathing heavily, eyes locked in mutual recognition. The tension between rivalry and respect shifted, solidifying a begrudging acknowledgement of each other's strength.

Kaelen's cold smirk softened just a fraction. "Not bad, Shadowflame."

Kairo's grin widened. "You're not too shabby yourself, Ice."

They sheathed their magic, the fiery embers and icy tendrils retreating into the ether.

That night, in the quiet solitude of his room, Kairo felt the familiar ping of his system.

『Skill Unlocked: Shadowflame Veil (Lv.1)』

— Cloak yourself in shadowflame, increasing evasion by 20% for 30 seconds.

— Cost: 30 MP.

He flexed his fingers, feeling the new power ripple beneath his skin like a hidden flame waiting to ignite.

Rivals. They pushed him beyond his limits—forced him to sharpen his edge.

Kairo smiled to himself, the shadows dancing along his walls. Tomorrow, he would face Kaelen again. And next time, the fire would burn brighter.

Because in this dance of flame and ice, only one would dominate.

And Kairo intended it to be him.
