The silence inside the vehicle felt suffocating. Bennett gripped the steering wheel tighter, stealing glances at Kimi through the rearview mirror. Her expression remained stone-cold, jaw clenched as she stared out the passenger window. He decided against breaking the tension with words.

Miles passed before Bennett finally parked outside a quaint coffee shop downtown. The engine's hum died, leaving only the sound of their breathing.

Kimi pushed open her door and stepped onto the pavement without acknowledgment. Bennett followed her lead, watching as she walked ahead with rigid shoulders.

He had been studying her mood since they left her house. When she emerged earlier, her hands were empty and her demeanor had shifted completely. She had simply asked to go to the coffee shop they had discussed, then retreated into this cold silence.

Something had happened inside that house. Something that transformed her usual warmth into this barely contained fury.
