Kolton stared deeply into Kimi's eyes, desperately searching for any trace of the love that once existed between them. Yet her gaze remained cold and unforgiving, offering no glimpse of what he desperately hoped to find.
"Kimi," he whispered, his voice barely audible.
Moisture gathered in his eyes as emotions he had buried for years suddenly surfaced. He fought against the tears, unwilling to show such vulnerability.
She released his wrists and stepped back, brushing away her own tears with trembling fingers.
"Kolton, you should have maintained that same distrust you showed me all those years ago. There's no need for apologies now. You made your choice. You nearly destroyed everything I was. But..."
Her voice trailed off as she lowered her eyes, and when she looked up again, a bitter smile played across her lips. The expression sent a chill through him.
"But what?" he pressed, clinging to the hope that she might still listen to his explanation.
