Chapter 274 - Chapter 274: Magneto

Genosha is an artificial island spanning approximately 3,500 square kilometers. The entire island's basic framework was created by Magneto, but other mutants also contributed their efforts to this city built entirely by mutants. The island features complete mountain ranges running through it, as well as beautiful beaches and other natural landscapes where the metal framework is virtually invisible.

The Blackbird jet landed at the international airport (which didn't host many flights) in Hammer Bay, Genosha's capital. As the jet descended, Logan saw Magneto, without his helmet, smiling towards the aircraft. Logan let out a dissatisfied snort. Once the jet stopped, he was the first to stand up and walk down the ramp to confront Magneto. Peter immediately followed suit, with Kitty Pryde leading the New Mutants team curiously exiting the plane behind him.

"Wolverine, what an old friend after so long."

Erik Lehnsherr, Magneto, should be around 75 years old this year, but because he can control magnetic fields and enhance his own cells, his face looked only about fifty, not overly aged. Judging by his tall, robust physique, one might even mistake him for a young man in his twenties.

"I don't think we count as old friends, Magneto."

Logan walked up to Magneto after getting off the plane. "We're just here to investigate something. We'll leave as soon as we're done."

Magneto smiled and stared at Logan for a moment, then burst into a hearty laugh, which puzzled Logan. "What are you laughing at?"

"Scott Summers let you bring children to Genosha, Logan. That proves his goodwill; at least he's willing to believe that I am building this nation for the benefit of mutants. And yet, you speak to me with such coldness."

"Is that so?" Logan crossed his arms and looked at Magneto. "I thought Cyclops didn't trust you, so he sent me."

"That is why he is Charles' most excellent student."

As Magneto spoke, he looked over at Spider-Man, who was approaching, and extended his hand to him: "Welcome, Spider-Man. Genosha welcomes any friend to visit, as long as they don't harbor ill will."

"Yes... I saw a lot of travel ads for Genosha online, but unfortunately, there aren't many direct flights here."

"That's because some people are afraid of the public seeing the truth—seeing that my nation and I are not a hotbed of monsters and terrorists, but a Utopia," Magneto said, smiling kindly at the students following behind, then looked back at Logan. "If you don't mind, Logan, perhaps I can give you a tour of Genosha. It is a wondrous and beautiful country."

Logan merely stared at Magneto, offering no reply to his self-praise. Magneto extended his hand and turned a nearby metal fence into a platform large enough for everyone to stand on. He stepped onto it first, then watched the others. The students looked at Logan, somewhat unsure what to do. Logan frowned.

Then, Peter was the first to step onto the platform.

This surprised even Magneto, who looked at Peter and praised him: "Remarkable, Spider-Man. Your courage is admirable."

In reality, it's just that the Spider-Sense didn't register any danger, but it's probably best not to say that directly, Peter thought. As he did, Magneto handed him a wristband and explained: "In Genosha, to prevent malicious damage, we have a system for identifying non-mutants. They will be unable to access a significant number of locations. So, we prepare passes for our visitors. Please don't worry, there is no metal in it."

Peter nodded, took the pass, and put it on. Logan then led the students onto the platform. Magneto waved his hand, and the metal platform took flight, gradually leaving the airport and heading towards the urban area of Hammer Bay.

"So, what brings you here this time, Logan? And why the need to bring an Avenger along?"

"Nathaniel Essex may have come to your country, Magneto. This is related to a Super Soldier Program the Avengers are investigating."

"Nathaniel?" Magneto sounded utterly unconcerned. "He is not a mutant. If he were to sneak into Genosha, the identification system would immediately detect him."

"Not necessarily. The last time we saw him, he was able to fuse the genes of different mutants into the bodies of his clones. If he controls such a clone, it shouldn't be too difficult to sneak in."

Magneto nodded at this, acknowledging the threat, but still didn't seem too bothered. Mister Sinister's goal was singular. If he snuck in, it would be for the Genetic Trimming Device, which cost as much as a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier to build. But that device was currently under Magneto's control. By simply waiting, the guy posed no real threat.

"In that case, how about we two handle the Nathaniel problem? You can let the children tour Genosha. Since they're out to see the world, visiting Genosha might be beneficial."

After making this proposal, Magneto looked at Logan. "What is it, are you worried I might do something harmful to the children?"

Logan merely continued to frown. He didn't have Peter's sensory abilities, but he could feel the sincerity, or perhaps, the indifference, in Magneto's words.

He was truly proud of the nation he had built and wished to boast of his accomplishments to his old adversaries.

The metal disk gradually flew over the urban area of Hammer Bay. A massive statue appeared before everyone—a statue of Magneto over a hundred meters tall, composed entirely of the wreckage of Sentinel robots. Logan was about to scoff, but then he noticed that the statue was two-sided.

Facing the ocean, visible to everyone entering Genosha, was Magneto. But the side facing the nation of Genosha was a statue that made Logan fall silent.

"Chuck..." Calling the Professor by his familiar nickname, Logan scratched the back of his head helplessly. "If you can guarantee the students will be back before nine to sleep, then fine."

"Of course. You will be accommodated at the Magneto Palace."

Magneto landed the group in front of his palace. After getting off, the students left, mostly nervous yet curious. Peter and Kitty waved at them, intending to follow Logan inside to deal with the main business with Magneto. Unexpectedly, after just two steps, Magneto stopped and looked at Peter.

"Spider-Man, I hope you also take a tour of Genosha. A positive evaluation of our country from an Avenger would be helpful to us. Besides, I'm sure the Avengers would like to know what kind of nation Genosha truly is."

"I've also prepared a guide for you. She will show you around Genosha properly."

Magneto smiled and introduced the red-haired young woman who was walking toward them. Peter recognized the girl's true identity instantly, as she was about the same age as him, and he had just met her older Multiversal version two days prior.

"Come and meet her, Scarlet Witch."
