Although the reasons were different, the final conclusion and the resulting plot might align: Curt Connors of Universe-616 might, like the Lizard in The Amazing Spider-Man, release a serum across all of New York, attempting to transform everyone into Lizard creatures.
If so, would it lead to similar outcomes? Would Captain George Stacy die while pursuing the Lizard?
It shouldn't, Peter thought. It's not the same universe, and I have the Avengers backing me up. Things like that shouldn't happen.
Peter couldn't help but sigh again. As the year drew to a close, Thor had seen no major threats on Earth and had returned to Asgard early to watch over Odin's hibernation. If Thor were still around, this problem wouldn't exist; he could just wave his hammer and sweep the cloud-like serum away.
So, what should he do?
"Peter? Why the long face?"
Aunt May, noticing Peter's troubled expression, quietly asked if something was wrong. Peter didn't respond immediately, so she gently touched his arm and asked again, "What's wrong, Peter? Are you alright?"
"I'm fine, May."
After saying this, Peter suddenly thought of something. He glanced at Uncle Ben, who also looked concerned, and asked Aunt May, "Uh, Aunt May, are you still going to the soup kitchen today?"
"I go every day."
"I was thinking of going to the soup kitchen to help out today. Do you mind?"
Seeing Peter's somewhat forced smile, Aunt May asked worriedly, "Has something happened?"
"No, nothing... just some lab stuff. I want a change of scenery, maybe help out at the soup kitchen."
"Don't put too much pressure on yourself, Peter," Uncle Ben added with concern. "You can't solve everything alone. You need to learn to admit that."
"I've known that for a long time, Uncle Ben."
Peter smiled, then waited for Gwen to leave. He needed to walk to school with Gwen today, or rather, he had something important to say to her.
Gwen Stacy was sipping milk while staring at her father. Captain George Stacy was reading the newspaper. When he lifted his coffee cup, he noticed his daughter's gaze and asked curiously, "What's wrong, Gwen? Is there something on my face?"
"Very serious dark circles. How did you manage to get more tired after being promoted to a Police Inspector who doesn't have to go on patrol?"
"Duty, work. The NYPD motto: Loyal to the end." George smiled helplessly. "Last night, while most officers were home, a mad scientist decided to break into the Oscorp Tech building and created a giant... mini-Godzilla."
"Giant mini-Godzilla? What kind of phrase is that?"
"According to Spider-Man, it was probably five meters tall. Compared to Godzilla, it's definitely mini, but it's bulkier than the Hulk." George explained the situation. "The monster might need the Avengers to handle, but the mad scientist, Doctor Octopus, needed us to bring him in. Oscorp Tech happens to be in our 12th Precinct's jurisdiction."
Doctor Octopus... I think Peter mentioned him. A big villain, but in his 'perfect world' he wasn't irredeemable. That's strange.
"What about you, Gwendolyn? Did something good happen to you?"
"...Why do you say that?"
"Just a father's intuition. I feel like you've become very, well, happy. And the clothes you've been wearing the past couple of days are nicer than before, and you've been paying more attention to your appearance..." Inspector Stacy asked a question of particular concern to a father. "Are you dating someone?"
"...No."
Inspector Stacy asked with uncertainty, "Really no one?"
"I do want a boyfriend, but no, I don't have one."
"So you're dressing up to attract boys?"
"Of course not!" Gwen rolled her eyes exasperatedly. "Is that how you see your daughter?"
"I'm just pointing out how strange your words are. So, tell me, what's really going on?" Inspector Stacy asked with great curiosity. Gwen's face flushed a little, but she finally smiled and admitted, "I'm, uh, I'm trying to ask Peter out."
"Peter?" Inspector Stacy asked uncertainly. "Which Peter? Peter Benjamin Parker?"
"Yes, who else would I know named Peter?"
Inspector Stacy hesitated for a moment, then burst into a hearty laugh, much like J. Jonah Jameson, which annoyed Gwen immensely. After he had laughed it off, he shook his head helplessly. "Impossible, impossible. I know Parker. He's a smart, helpful, very bright, kind-hearted kid. He's excellent, absolutely excellent. How could... how could he be interested in you?"
???
Although she knew her father might tease her, Gwen still couldn't maintain her composure when he actually said it. "Dad?!"
"Alright, alright, I won't laugh," Inspector Stacy said, shaking his head resignedly. "So, you said you want to find... oh, I understand. You've realized you like Peter, but maybe he hasn't agreed to date you, so you plan to..."
"See if we can go out a few times."
Inspector Stacy shook his head and laughed again.
"I still don't know why he became so popular once he got to high school; there weren't many girls around him in middle school."
"Well, I can only wish you good luck," Inspector Stacy shrugged. "But if I could be Benjamin's in-law someday, my God, that would be the happiest day of my life."
Gwen sighed helplessly, slung her backpack on, and prepared to leave for school. As she left the front door, she saw Peter sitting right outside, waiting for her. Slightly surprised and happy, she walked over. "What's up? Does Spider-Man not need to patrol today?"
"The alarm system hasn't flagged any issues, so I guess I can skip it for now. Let's go to school."
The two started walking toward the subway station. Before Gwen could say anything, Peter spoke first: "Gwen, there's something very important I need to tell you."
"Oh, uh... alright."
She felt her voice drop. "Go ahead. I can handle it."
"I have to tell Captain Stacy my true identity—Wait, what do you mean 'you can handle it'?"
Peter looked at Gwen with confusion, but Gwen's mouth was already wide open in shock. "You're going to... you're going to tell my dad?"
