Chapter 27 - Chapter 27 – Priest

"Congratulations!

You drew a tier 1 class!

Priest!"

Priest?! Just the class he needed. Matthew hurriedly picked the Purification skill. Now he could get rid of the demonic mana inside of him. He didn't need to hurt anyone. But then he looked downstairs. Te female werewolf was immune to his bullets. He would have no chance to hurt her. Unless he used the demonic mana. It was said it could double one's stats. He looked at his:

"Matthew Lordstone – Level 7

Doctor – Level 1

Warrior – Level 1

Gunner – Level 1

Plague Doctor – Level 1

Ranger – Level 1

Summoner – Level 1

Priest – Level 1

Stats

HP = 16/ VIT = 11

STR = 12/ AGI = 12

MIN = 14/ CHA = 10

Skills (1): Anesthesia (E), Imbue Mana (E), Boost Gunpowder (E), Resist Disease (E), Animal Companion (E), Purification (E)"

He could purify himself after battle or when he started to lose control. But now he wanted to fight that werewolf. He drew his machete and prepared to jump down and fight with a smile on his face.

Meanwhile the werewolf were climbing the stairs slowly as the wolves fell to gunfire and to the spears.

Jacob tried to pierce her throat, but she dodged easily and grabbed his spear pulling him to her and out of the barricade. When he let go of the weapon, he was already half body out. In that moment a wolf bit his arm and pulled him out of there.

Jacob screamed, but only briefly. Another wolf quickly bit his throat killing him.

Seeing Jacob die, Matthew shifted to move forward screaming his name, but a big hand pulled him back by the shoulder. It was a soldier accompanied by 3 others. All of them carrying riffles. They assumed Matthew's position and rained bullets down the wolves quickly changing magazines every time they ran out of bullets. Full auto. Not even the werewolf was unharmed by them.

She looked upstairs growling as blood flowed from some bullet wounds on her body. All too shallow. She then ran up using her claws to climb the walls and avoid the spears. In a single jump she was already in front of the soldiers.

They didn't have time to react. In a single sweep, her claws took all three men's throats.

Matthew soon opened fire when the two adventurers who were also shooting guns with him earlier fled upstairs to call for help. The men on the barricade could do nothing but to keep the wolves trying to get up away.

Matthew was alone.

From that distance, his bullets proved more useful against the werewolf. Some even drawing some blood. She go close and tried to cut his throat the same way she did earlier against the soldiers. But Matthew was clad in red mana and managed to dodge. In the same movement he hit her side with his machete, but the blade didn't cut her fur. All she felt was a blunt thud like being punched on the ribs.

This time her claw connected and easily pierced Matthew's vital shield lodging into his shoulder. He fired his gun three times the next moment, only one of the bullets penetrating her fur and making her bleed. He was now out of bullets.

Then came the bite. Right down his neck. His blood now coming down on his chest like a river. Matthew couldn't even scream. His vision got blurred, darkness creeping in. His only thought was his family. He could see them crying over his coffin. And then Vanessa. She was upstairs. The cute receptionist who lost a hand. She was also upstairs. And Paula and Michael and all the civilians and the other adventurers.

Invigorated with the will to help them and not to die. He applied Anesthesia on himself and mustered all the strength he had to hold the beast's head in place and come down with the machete on its neck.

The werewolf howled when blood flowed from her neck. Not deep enough to be fatal. Not in the correct place. But enough to hurt. Matthew was bleeding out smiling and gesticulating obscenities.

"Come you bitch!" He said but soon fell to the ground unconscious.

The werewolf pounced on him, but a hail of bullets kept it away. Some adventurers upstairs ran down, Paula and Vanessa among them. Vanessa quickly ran towards Matthew using a rag of her own shirt to stop the bleeding. Paula drew magic from Lumi and threw an ice shard on the werewolf piercing her leg.

A shotgun opened a hole on her shoulder. When it tried to pounce again. Paula froze it in place. At a short distance, the guns roared and finally the beast went down. The adventurers rushed forward to the barricade to help contain the wolves trying to get up from the first floor. While Paula ran to Matthew and started to heal his neck.

Matthew woke up in bed. The receptionist sitting by his side.

"What happened?" Matthew asked still feeling the world spin around him.

"You lost a lot of blood. They said you fought against one of the werewolves alone."

"And the werewolf? Where is she?"

"She's dead. You don't need to worry, you need to rest."

The sound of gunfire and screams were still audible. The battle was still raging.

"I have to go back there." Matthew tried to get up but was easily stopped by the receptionist. His vision got dark again and he almost fainted.

"You can't. You already did enough! You can't do anything else." She said with tears on her eyes.

Before Matthew could say anything, another person came inside being carried. It was Michael. He had a deep cut on his stomach. Behind him Paula came in drinking a mana potion to restore her MP. She healed Michael and drank another potion.

"What happened to him?" Matthew asked.

"A second werewolf climbed to the roof. We fought and managed to kill him." Paula answered cleaning her hands from the blood. "But this idiot sacrificed himself to give us the chance." She then looked to the receptionist. "Take care of this one too." She smiled before going back outside.

"Heard you killed one yourself." Michael moaned.

"I fought one by myself, but it almost killed me. Your sister and the others were the ones that killed it."

"The important part is that there is only one more left." Michael said closing his eyes.

"Let's hope there's only one more."

"Don't say things like that." Michael groaned. "If there are more we're all dead."

"Don't say things like that." Matthew parroted.

"Hey, man. I'm sorry I threatened you back then. I just get really protective of my sister." Michael apologized looking at him changing the subject.

"I have a little sister. I would do the same."

They smiled at each other and bumped their fists.

"You're keeping it under control, Paula said." Michael commented.

"I'm not. It's taking everything I have to keep it under control. But you don't need to worry. I leveled up and got the Priest class. As soon as this battle is over I'll purify myself."

"Thank God. I'm glad to hear it man."

Not soon after that, Paula brought in another adventurer. His body covered in blood, one of his eyes missing by a scratch mark on his face.

She sat on a chair breathing. She was clearly exhausted. She popped open another bottle of mana potion.

"We lost the second floor." She said between breaths. "I don't know what to do anymore."

"What about the third Werewolf?" Michael asked.

"He's the one who took the second floor. We're holding him down there, but soon he'll get up here. We lost too many people already. Don't think we'll be able to hold him."

"So what do we do?" Matthew asked.

"Keep fighting." Paula finished her mana potion and moved to the door, but Matthew stopped her.

"I want to try something. I've been thinking about this ever since I saw Lumi."

"What?" Paula asks trying to guess what he wanted.

"My skill. Animal Companion. If I make Lumi more powerful maybe you can defeat the third werewolf yourself."

"I will not have you infusing demonic mana into my Lumi!" Paula said with a disgusted face.

"It's alright. I leveled up." Matthew answers while sitting down and casting purification on himself.

A golden light surrounded him and the red rim on his eyes disappeared.

"You pulled a priest class?!" Paula said surprised.

"Want to try, Paula? Lumi?"

They brought a whole box of mana potions. The receptionist was holding Matthew steady while Lumi was standing on a table in front of him.

"Lumi, I don't know how this works. Please guide me." Matthew asked when he started to pour mana into Lumi.

He drank one potion after another, nonstop infusing Lumi with mana. It was a mistake. This skill was a skill for level 40 adventurers to use on their pets. The amount of mana needed was far too great for him at level 7. Even supplementing it with mana potions.

The box was now empty and he realized he still needed much more mana. And looking at how Lumi was in pain, he could feel she would die if the skill wasn't completed.

So he did what adventurers should never do. He poured into the owl more mana that he had. Fainting on the receptionist's arms.

Lumi glowed and grew. Her tiny body tripling in size. Her claws grew bigger, her feathers, longer. An ice crown formed on her head.

Paula was speechless. An ice phoenix. Lumi transformed into an Ice Phoenix.
