Chapter 5 - My Parents, the Confusing Aliens

My parents are not bad people.

They're just… confusing aliens who speak in riddles and guilt trips.

Dad says things like "back in my day" at least six times a week, and Mom thinks sending me inspirational Facebook quotes counts as emotional support.

But underneath all that?

They love me.

They just don't always get me.

When I tried to explain anxiety to them, my dad said, "You just need to toughen up."

When I came out as bi last year, my mom blinked like I'd confessed to being a vampire.

It's exhausting.

But I'm starting to realize: they're figuring it out too.

"Sometimes the people who love you the most don't know how to show it. But they're trying."

Last night, Dad sat next to me on the couch and didn't say anything. He just passed me the remote and said, "Pick something dumb to watch."

We watched Shrek.

It meant everything.
