Chapter 10: Mouse Protector's Magical Adventure

– Hannah (Miss Militia) –

It truly was telling about just how desired Azuth's powers were that he could simply send them a message and have their entire PRT branch change their plans to facilitate his latest whim. Mouse Protector's golden ticket had gained instant attention from far beyond just their small section of the PRT.

Director Piggot didn't like Azuth or the influence he had, but that didn't stop them from dancing to his tune as she followed Mouse Protector to the location that Azuth designated. Holding her golden ticket aloft, Mouse Protector posed dramatically as it continued to glow and an equally golden rift formed in the air.

She'd heard that the Chief Director had wanted to take over the 'party selection', but the golden ticket had warned them that the choice lay with the holder of the ticket, Mouse Protector, and her alone. As someone who had been part of the first Ward team with Melissa, she knew better than most that getting Mel to do literally anything she didn't want to do was nigh impossible. Her refusal to work with authority figures was what had led to her going independent in the first place, and Mel didn't hesitate to ignore the PRT's 'suggestions' and pick a party she thought best suited her style.

"Come along, squires!" Mouse Protector cheered as she entered the rift. Clockblocker looked to her for guidance, and she simply nodded as Assault grinned. At the very least, the three party members were Protectorate members, but it was hardly the ideal choice.

At the end of the day, Mel had picked her party members based on a single thing… their willingness to wear the oversized mouse ears she'd passed around the PRT. Armsmaster had thrown his away, so he'd been found unsuitable for the honour of being Mel's squire.

Colin had looked like he was going to strangle Mel when she'd explained why he wasn't being chosen. Honestly, she'd suspected Mel would pull something like this and had kept her dark-green-coloured ears. Where did Mel get her goods? They were a perfect fit and matched her Cape outfit. Assault and Clockblocker's accessories fit just as well, red and white, respectively, as they moved through the portal.

To her surprise, they found themselves in what seemed like a small, medieval village, though without any inhabitants. Before them stood Azuth himself, the infamous Trump giving them a pleased look upon their arrival.

"Brave heroes, welcome to my realm. I am pleased you heeded the call to adventure," Azuth said, his voice booming as his lips twitched. She hadn't missed the way his eyes flickered to the headpieces each of them were wearing.

"Heya, Azzy!" Mouse Protector replied, giving him an exaggerated wave as he chuckled. "You promised a quest, and I've gathered my party!"

"I can see that, Mousey," Azuth replied fondly. The higher-ups hadn't missed that Azuth seemed fond of Mouse Protector, so she was unsurprised that they were trying to take advantage of that. "And if it is a quest you are seeking, you've come to the right place. Welcome to Astera, or the barebones that will one day be a mighty hub of adventurers."

"Did you make this place?" Assault asked, looking around with a grin on his face. He and Clock were acting like children, but Azuth seemed to have an appreciation for the more laidback hero types, so it wasn't a problem.

"Quite. Admittedly, Astera has a long way to go, but for now, it has everything I need for this quest. This is the hub village from which countless adventures will depart. And this is the Adventurer's Guild," Azuth explained, gesturing at the largest building behind him. "Follow me."

As he finished speaking, he turned and walked toward the building, the doors opening without any movement from him. Mouse Protector quickly trailed behind, with the rest of them following suit. The spacious room had wooden but fairly fancy furniture, including a front desk which had a floating book hovering on it.

"Before we can begin your adventure, we'll first need to get you registered as Adventurers. Mouse Protector, please step forward," Azuth said, gesturing to the book as Mel rushed forward. "From here, quests can be accepted, and more importantly, the Guild will track your reward points. Points can, of course, be exchanged for any number of rewards, including boons from yours truly. But before they can track you, we'll need to get you logged in the system. Place your hand on the book."

Mel did so with no hesitation or concern, as she happily pushed her hand into the page. The book flashed with arcane light, which shimmered across Mel's form for a moment before she moved back at Azuth's gesture. With a flash of light, a small amulet appeared on the desk.

It looked like a rectangular medallion made of some bronze-coloured metal, and as Mel grabbed it, Azuth smiled.

"This is your Guild Emblem. As a first-time adventurer, you are at the lowest rank, copper. The rank of the adventurer dictates the rewards they can purchase and the quests they can take. As with all the items I grant, it is bound to you and cannot be stolen or lost," Azuth explained, gesturing to a strange device that had confused her when they first arrived.

It was a blank painting with a pedestal in front of it, but as Mel rushed forward she understood the purpose. Mel placed the emblem onto the pedestal, and the blank painting changed to display her 'stats'.

It was mostly blank, beyond her 'name', being her cape name. Quests accepted, zero. Quests complete, zero. Points, zero. There were more stats that seemed to be concealed, but she figured they'd be revealed when they mattered.

Azuth showed them through the other features of the 'Guild' as the rest of them got their emblems, such as the Quest board and the Exchange counter, but one 'prize' gained her attention. One of the potential rewards you could spend points on was… an invitation to the Guild.

They could invite someone of their choosing to the Adventurer's Guild. If all four of them saved up and got the invitation, then the PRT would have eight people in the Guild. Well, six plus Mouse and whoever she picked. Then, those six would become twelve, then twenty-four. The more people they had earning points, the better for the PRT as a whole.

"Your emblems will also work similarly to Mouse Protector's golden ticket, allowing you entry to Astera once this place is fully up and running. But unto today's main attraction… ordinarily, you would need to choose your own quest and handle your own preparation, but as this is the inaugural quest, I have handled such things myself," Azuth explained, clapping his hands as a set of equipment appeared on a table. "Each of you has been provided with three healing potions and a pack with things you may require for your adventure. A basic map of the Ancient Forest and a compass has also been provided."

…healing potions?

Watching as Clock ran forward and grabbed the closest bag, she saw him pull out a glass bottle filled with a red liquid before he continued rummaging through the pack. The pack also seemed to have rope, rations, a small knife, and other useful things.

"Death is not the end in this realm, as any fallen adventurer will be revived at the Sanctuary within Astera. However, that does not mean that death is trivial. Revival will cost points, though you will be revived even if you have zero points remaining, and failed quests will be marked upon your record, and can see your adventurer rank drop or even result in your expulsion from the Guild. Also, dying does tend to hurt," Azuth explained with a shrug at the end. "Fighting within Astera is not permitted, with the exception of the arena where adventurers can engage in Player vs Player combat. Now, onto the quest itself. You four will descend into the Ancient Forest to hunt the mighty Anjanath. As this is a mandatory quest chosen by the Game Master, failure will not incur a penalty, but as this is a quest of higher difficulty than copper adventurers would usually be permitted to partake in, success will see you all promoted up to Iron or even Bronze depending on your performance."

"...wait, what's an Anjanath?" Clock asked, fiddling with the mace he'd somehow found. Was that in his starter pack? She noticed that the packs were both lighter and seemed to fit more inside them than physics would permit.

Azuth's smile did not give them confidence, but there were three professional heroes here and an admittedly talented if childish Ward. How bad could it be?

– Samantha (Über) –

"Oi, put down the controller and get your ass over here," Sam called out, making Charlotte blink as she looked up from the game she was playing. "Azuth stole our whole shtick!"

"What do you- is that a fucking dinosaur?" Charlotte asked, blinking as they watched the live stream of Azuth's latest game. On the screen, four familiar heroes retreated from a fucking tyrannosaurus rex on steroids.

"It's an Anjanath, apparently. So basically, yes. It breathes fire as well," Sam explained with a shrug. "It set Assault on fire and ate Mouse Protector's mount. Anyway, that's not the point. His first stream has already gotten more views than our last ten combined."

"...that's what you find wrong with this?" Charlotte asked, making Sam shrug. Streaming 'games' was their whole deal. "Are you reading this? Azuth made a fantasy world with quests, monsters and loot, and you're more worried about his view count?"

"Well, yeah? Especially since I was hoping to use our audience to help us get into the Wizard's games," Sam admitted, making Charlotte's eyes widen as she realised the issue. They had a large audience, but Azuth was becoming the centre of attention on an international scale. They couldn't use their audience as a tool to get Azuth to work with them if he had a much larger one already.

As the party of heroes retreated from the enraged Anjanath, she watched them dash through a wall of vines, Clockblocker stopping to run his hand across them. The Anjanath charged right into them, expecting them to move, only to find the vines frozen in place, ignoring its immense strength.

The Ancient Forest was a dangerous place, with more than just Anjanath to worry about as they narrowly avoided running into Rathian, a large green-scaled flying wyvern with a poison-coated spiked tail. It was nice of Azuth to give them a bestiary of the things that were going to try to eat them. They regrouped, making a new plan to deal with the very tough dinosaur while Mousey resummoned her Dire Rat.

"Shit, I didn't think of that. Imagine how many viewers we'd get from streaming our own quests," Charlotte said, making Sam nod. Azuth had made this grand announcement, including announcing the opening of the Adventurers Guild, a way for people to earn the boons that he could give out.

In truth, she was getting worried. Charlotte was becoming increasingly obsessed with the idea of Azuth fixing her power, and Sam had already had to shut down several dangerous ideas of how to get Azuth's attention. Charlotte wasn't so easily deterred, a frown on her face as she read through the 'rules' of the Adventurers Guild.

They needed an in, a way to get their foot in the door. Once they were in, she was sure that they'd be able to kick ass and grind their way through the Guild ranks and stack up points. She had spent days grinding for a shitty unique weapon before, she feared no tedious grind, and this could take their streams to new heights.

She doubted Azuth was going to stop with just this, and getting in early seemed like the best chance they had. Of course, everyone was trying to get in with Azuth, and that was the problem. Azuth had capes from all over the world looking for a chance to get in on his games, especially now that the PRT had announced that their tests had come back clean. He wasn't mastering the people he gave power-ups to like Teacher had.

There were entire organisations, both heroic and villainous, that would be able to give Azuth far more than they could. Their 'wealth' was primarily in rare collectables and vintage games, hardly the kind of stuff a seemingly all-powerful wizard could be bribed with.

Streaming paid the bills, but Tinkering was expensive, and Charlotte blew through most of what they earned in record time.

Azuth could announce the buy-in to his games at a billion dollars, and he'd get offers within the hour. Something told her that wealth wasn't going to be the answer to this problem. They needed a way to convince Azuth to bring them in, and fast… before Charlotte tried to take it into her own hands.

Still, she couldn't help but be a little jealous. They were Über and Leet, the de facto gamer capes. This kind of stuff was basically made for them.

– Melissa (Mouse Protector) –

"Does this plan have me getting set on fire again?" Assault asked, making her beam.

"You're the party's tank, so yes," Mel admitted shamelessly, making him pout dramatically.

"You know I control kinetic energy, right? Fire still hurts," Assault pointed out with a sigh.

"Oh please, our wizard froze you, and our ranger summoned a water pistol to put you out," Mouse waved off.

"It was a high-pressure water cannon, not a water pistol," Hannah sighed as she rubbed her forehead. Her mouse ears looked a little singed but then, the nasty beasty hadn't appreciated being shot in the face with a rocket launcher and had taken it a little personally.

They'd also discovered a small flaw in that plan… noise attracted attention, and in the Ancient Forest, that was bad. If it hadn't been for the Biggest Cheese's epic sacrifice, they'd have been swarmed and slain by the horde of angry monsters.

Of course, Biggy Cheese's sacrifice was slightly lessened by the fact that she just summoned him back again five minutes later, but still!

"Well, I think it's a wonderful plan," their time wizard agreed, the grin audible in his voice. "Lead on, glorious leader!"

Clockblocker was having fun, clearly understanding the importance of enjoying your 'work', and she gave him a cheesy thumbs up as she reached out. The Ancient Forest was vast, but it had something that gave them one hell of an edge…

It had rodents, and plenty of them. They weren't conventional mice, but they were close enough for her new power to allow her to reach out and control them as a thousand furry friends became her eyes and ears.

The trap was set, but this was no mousetrap ready to snap closed upon her as she grabbed her cheese. Today, the mouse would be the one to trap the cat… or a fire breathing T-rex.

– Ethan (Assault) –

You know, he was starting to have second thoughts about his decision to volunteer for Mousey's party as he headed out to do his part in their epic quest.

The Anjanath was far from subtle, making tracking it easy even without the lizard-like mice leading him through the dense forest. The giant fire-breathing monster was eating a 'Jagras', a tiger-sized lizard that hunted in packs (as they'd learned earlier when they'd gotten ambushed by a group of them), and despite their recent scrap, Anjanath either didn't notice or didn't care about him.

As Assault charged, Anjanath came to regret that. Picking up speed rapidly, Assault leapt forward and kicked Anjanath in the face, hard.

That is to say, hard for a human... Anjanath's head snapped to the side from the force, dropping its meal, before it turned back to him with fury in its eyes, letting out a roar of anger as it began to charge at him.

"Meep meep," Assault replied, sticking out his tongue, as he dashed into the forest once more, hearing the thundering sound of Anjanath's footsteps behind him. He really hoped Mousey knew what she was doing, but he couldn't deny that playing bait for a T-rex was honestly an improvement over his usual patrols.

As he dodged another fireball, he briefly considered what it meant that this felt safer than any of the patrols he'd done this week.

– Dennis (Clockblocker) –

MP really was the best. Things had been hilarious since she'd arrived, and it was only getting better. Sure, he'd been tail-whipped into a tree and almost eaten several times but that was just part of the experience!

As he heard the stomping of dinosaur feet, he grinned under his mask as he prepared to execute his part of this plan. Miss Militia stood opposite him, on either side of the path that Assault was due to come running through.

As Assault dashed past them, he and Miss Militia both grabbed either end of the rope and lifted it, pulling it so it was going across the forest path at chest height, which happened to barely be knee height for the fucking dinosaur currently charging their way.

Now, a piece of rope wouldn't even slow down a creature like Anjanath… but as he used his powers, he grinned and let go, the rope remaining hovering in the air. His power made things immovable, and while Anjanath expected to barrel through it without even noticing, it found the rope unwilling to move as he tripped the fire-breathing T-rex and watched it fall with a deafening thud.

And that was when their mousey leader sprung into action, cutting free the tarp that they'd made from the tent that had been in their supply pack from where she'd hung it from the trees. Riding the tarp down, she landed on the Anjanath with a grandiose pose even as it roared and tried to rise.

Dashing forward, he tapped the tarp, and suddenly, the Anjanath found that the sheet covering it was immovable, a grin on Dennis' face (even as he made a rapid retreat from the very angry dinosaur).

Assault kept running, leaping forward as he hit a tree and just… bounced off it like it was made of rubber, launching himself back toward the trapped monster and delivering a devastating kick to the monster's exposed face. Miss Militia didn't hesitate, her weapon changing into a fucking minigun as she ruthlessly fired explosive rounds into the exposed side of the beast while Mousey herself drew her blade and leapt for the face (despite the way it was currently spewing fire).

With an 'oh-ho!' she stabbed her blade directly into the monster's eye, repeating the blow she'd done to take down the giant (hot) nazi chick. Was it Fenja or Menja? He could never remember which one of the playboy valkyries was which, to be honest.

Anjanath thrashed around, its tail swinging wildly, but his power made things immovable and even Alexandria herself couldn't move something he'd frozen. Sure, they had no idea how long it was going to last but the three damage dealers went to town on the pinned monster, reminding him that all three were scary strong when they wanted to be.

He was a good boy and remained far from the danger, as ordered by the stern and scary Miss Militia, and not just because he really didn't want to get set on fire. Honestly, he'd prefer the flames to the scoldings that would follow if he disobeyed the plan.

Also, he was very vulnerable to explosives, and Miss Militia was going to town on the poor thing. Man, he kinda felt sorry for Anjanath. Then the sheet moved again, and he remembered that it was a very large, very hungry monster that wanted to cook and eat them.

Gravely wounded but very pissed, the Anjanath rose to its shaky feet with a deafening roar… which was interrupted by the sound of an explosion as Miss Militia ruthlessly fired an RPG into its open mouth, causing its head to explode into a shower of gore.

As he wiped some Anjanath parts from his costume, Mouse Protector climbed onto its back, let out a cheer and hummed a victorious melody as she posed with her sword held high.

Miss Militia calmly put her weapon away with a long-suffering sigh and Assault moved forward to poke the corpse with a curious look on his face. The adult heroes could be pretty badass sometimes-

A second roar made them all freeze, remembering the lesson they'd learnt earlier… Noise attracts monsters.

"Let's cheese it," Mouse said courageously as the sounds of roars and stomping feet approached. As she summoned Biggest Cheese, he was first in line to mount the giant rat as they made their brave advance (far away from here). Watching as a giant bipedal dark green monster burst through the foliage, Dennis confirmed two things.

This place was really cool… and fucking terrifying as the monster breathed a thick black cloud at them, barely missing as Biggest Cheese swerved. Still, how many people could say they had slain a dinosaur and barely escaped a… giant angry pickle?

As the monster turned its attention to Anjanath, it began to devour the abandoned body and seemingly forgot about them, causing a wave of relief to go through them.

For like a minute before they remembered why they stayed on the ground as two angry wyverns took to the skies, the red one firing fireballs at them as the green tried to knock them out of the sky.

– Later –

Singed and bloodied, Dennis grinned as each of their copper emblems turned to bronze. Azuth's mighty voice boomed through the room, announcing their successful quest.

This had been live-streamed, so he had to have a fangirl or two at this point, right?

Due to this being the first quest to ever be completed, they all got a bunch of points and access to some of the store options that would normally be locked behind a higher level. He chuckled as he saw Mousey fussing over Biggest Cheese, now clad in his new armour.

Miss Militia didn't spend hers, saving up for something, and Assault… wasn't telling what he'd bought, a grin on his face. It was just him left, going over all the menus like a kid in a candy store. It was funny, there were potions that could cure any affliction… and a couple of years ago, he'd have gotten that instantly.

But his dad was getting better every day thanks to Doc Ziegler's treatments. The very hot doc was a godsend, which was why he'd decided to look out for her nephew in Arcadia. Not that Sol needed anyone babysitting him, but Dennis had a debt to the angel of mercy that had healed his dad (and had haunted his teenage dreams).

As he found one menu, he froze. Every piece of sanity told him that it was a bad idea as he saw one option, but his logical brain was too busy making sure that Miss Militia wasn't watching as he quickly confirmed the purchase.

As his new familiar appeared by his side, Assault let out a laugh, and Mouse Protector snorted. As she looked at the much smaller (but still bigger than him) Baby Anjanath, Miss Militia just let out a long, tired sigh.

"You get to explain that one to Director Piggot," Miss Militia said, having already given up after a long day of adventuring with him, Mousey and Assault. Anjanath drooled on him, its massive tongue hanging from its fanged mouth, and Dennis beamed. Today was a good day.

– Solomon White (Azuth) –

Knowledge that I plan to open the adventurer's guild up to others soon has set the internet ablaze with people wondering how I'll decide who gets to join. I actually took a loss on this quest, since I gave them more points than they earned me, but sending them out with more rewards will serve as a good bait for future adventurers.

"That went well! I told you Clock would take the Baby Anjanath," Riley cheers, making me chuckle. She had fun helping me set up the ecosystem, but I mostly just stole the starter area from Monster Hunter World.

Honestly, letting her treat it like a petting zoo seemed to take her mind off the dark thoughts she thinks I haven't noticed. As bizarre as our situation seems, she's essentially my little sister now, and that comes with the responsibility to take care of her and keep her out of trouble.

She can't do any harm in here, and her power has helped us make new monsters and subspecies without me needing to spend more points than necessary.

Maybe giving Bonesaw access to monster materials to get a discount was a little much, but trust has to start somewhere, and I made sure she wasn't up to anything. I think she just enjoyed the chance to work with such interesting materials, and I know her shard was going wild.

A part of me wonders how Panacea would act around them, but I suppose I'll find out with Clock's new pet dinosaur.

"To be fair, we gave a teenage boy a chance to own a dinosaur," I say with a shrug. There were plenty of other things Dennis could have spent his points on, but as a teenage boy myself, I get it. A baby Anjanath isn't the smart purchase, but it is the cool one. Riley giggles, looking over the forest we designed together with a smile as Carbuncle sits in her lap. My Chocobo squarks for attention, making me chuckle as I stroke its fur.

"So, what's next, boss?" Riley asks, making me frown in thought.

"We need to add more regions and monsters, I want to improve the quest system a bit… but mostly? Tomorrow is a very big day for me," I admit, making her frown thoughtfully.

"You mean that Taylor girl, right?" Riley asks, making me nod. I told her that much because she's a part of this now, and keeping her in the dark will only put distance between us. It wouldn't be fair to sabotage her at every turn while I'm trying to give her a second chance. "What are you going to do?"

"It might not even happen. Shadow Stalker is already in deep shit. Surely she wouldn't try to cause more trouble while she has so much heat on her already?" I say hopefully, and Riley just laughs dryly. It's one of the laughs that makes her sound far older than she actually is.

"You'd think so, but you don't know psychopaths. Everything you've told me about her tells me that she will try something. People like her always lash out when things start going wrong for them, and she's too scared to punch up, so she'll look for an easy outlet for her anger," Riley replies, a look of shame crossing her face. "If it's not the locker, it'll be something else. The question is, what are you going to do about it?"

I sigh, realising that she's probably right. Fucking Shadow Stalker. Taylor is due to trigger in a matter of hours. It's Sunday evening; she gets ambushed at the start of the school day on Monday. It's terrible, but Taylor could be useful.

Khepri is what saved the world, and there's no Khepri without Skitter. Sure, there are no Undersiders, but can I really get rid of such a useful piece against Scion?

"I- can I make a suggestion?" Riley asks, making me nod.

"You're part of the team, Riley. I can't guarantee I'll take your advice, but it's always welcome," I say with a soft smile. Working side by side with her on the forest admittedly softened me up to her.

"You'll regret it if you don't help her. I don't know why you think she's so important or what she's supposed to do in the future, but you're not the kind of person to sit back and let someone suffer so things go better for you. I'd be a mindless puppet or a blank slate if you were like that," Riley says, giving me a small smile. "If Taylor is really that important, give her a power yourself. That's what you do, after all."

"Maybe," I admit with a self-deprecating laugh. If it was so easy to just accept that Taylor needs to suffer for the good of the world, I wouldn't have spent the past week humming and hawing over it, would I?

Plus, what if Taylor, the Queen of Escalation, learns that I knew about the Locker and did nothing? There should be no way for her to learn that but this is Taylor we're talking about.

"...can I ask you something?" Riley asks, making me blink. "Why don't you just go and check her locker tonight? You could send a summon, right? Then you'd know for sure if there's anything inside it."

"...oh god damnit," I say, making her giggle as I facepalm.

— Bonus Scene — Ciara (Glaistig Uaine)

Sitting in her cell, the Fairie Queen considered things carefully.

Someone was changing the play, making the fairies dance for them instead of their intended audience. Even she was being puppeted to their strings, feeling the tug in her mind. She had been satisfied to wait out the show from within this gilded cage, but the new playwright had different ideas.

So be it.

It was time for the cage to open and the birds to fly free.
