Chapter 12: Knowing is half the battle (unless you ignore the warning)

– Solomon White (Azuth) –

"You found them?" I ask, shock clear in my tone as Jack chuckles.

"I'm no Sojourn or Ana, but I do know a few things," Jack reminds me as he eats his breakfast, ruffling Riley's hair as she giggles at his almost offended tone. He eats with us most mornings, but I think he takes pride in blatantly defying Angela's attempted diets in front of her. "I don't know the killer's identity yet, but I've found clear signs of a serial killer, leaving a trail of corpses in their wake."

I wince at that, knowing every death was because I wanted more points.

"Jack, not at the breakfast table," Angela scolds, looking at Riley pointedly.

"Oh, don't worry. It takes a lot more than that to make me lose my appetite, Auntie," Riley says cheerfully, making Angela sigh.

"Who are they targeting?" I ask, making Jack chuckle darkly.

"The Empire. Low-level thugs mostly. Iron Rain has tried to suppress the rumours, but a lot of the Empire's bottom-feeders are scared to go out at night," Jack explains, and instantly, a lot of the tension just fades from me.

"Wait, they're just killing neo-nazis?" I ask, instantly shelving my plans to resurrect the serial killer's victims later.

"Looks like it. Lots of broken bodies, some even being lynched or tied up and set on fire. My guess is that the Empire killed the wrong person and someone is on one hell of a crusade against them," Jack agrees. "The Empire have been searching for them, but they've found nothing so far. I'll keep looking until I can find the killer."

Maybe it's wrong of me, but I can't help but feel relieved that it was only some skinheads who ended up dead because of that drawback. Iron Rain's Empire is truly dangerous; you only need to look at what happened to Brian in this world to see that.

Wait. Aisha triggered in this world after her brother was lynched, now Empire thugs are turning up dead? I was assuming that the killer would be someone from another media brought into Worm, but could it have turned a pre-existing Worm character into the killer? The description was vague, after all.

I pass on my suspicions to Soldier, who just nods and agrees to look into it, but Angela puts her foot down about murder talk at the breakfast table. Yesterday went… well enough. Taylor never ended up in the locker, even if she got roughed up for putting up a fight, which means that right now, Taylor doesn't have any power. She's just a normal student. Alexandria knows Taylor is the girl who would have killed her had she triggered, so Shadow Stalker is getting hit hard.

They've already announced Shadow Stalker's 'retirement' to focus on her schooling, and Emma and Madison are in equally deep shit. Barnes is a good divorce lawyer, but the PRT are eating him alive as he tries to keep Emma out of trouble. She's already been suspended, facing expulsion and potentially juvie herself. It looks like she'll avoid juvie if things keep going the way they are, because she and Madison folded like a house of cards. The slightest pressure from an authority figure she couldn't bat her eyelashes at, and she gave up.

Little Miss Survivor wasn't so tough when faced with jail time.

With them both throwing Sophia under the bus to save themselves, Sophia is certainly juvie-bound and likely will be transferred to an adult jail when she is old enough. The fact that she attacked Kate has only put her in even deeper shit, and she's remained entirely unapologetic.

It's caused a bit of a shitstorm in the PRT because she's clearly unhinged and neither her handler nor Armsmaster noticed, despite the other Wards reporting her actions repeatedly. It's another stain on Armsmaster's rep, since a lot of the shit getting smeared on Sophia is splattering onto him as well.

The news report on the dissolution of the Slaughterhouse Nine plays in the background. The official report is that they simply self-destructed and Hatchet Face killed Jack Slash, leading to complete chaos.

Bonesaw has been declared dead alongside Hatchet Face, dying during the chaos, and the Protectorate has claimed credit for stopping Crawler. The details are sparse, but they're saying he was taken down by the Triumvirate. The general public opinion is a mixture of 'thank god' and 'the only real surprise is that this didn't happen sooner.'

Mannequin, Shatterbird, Burnscar and Siberian are still AWOL, and that isn't encouraging, but without Jack holding them together, they're far less dangerous (except for Siberian). Without Jack's cheat power, the remnants of the Nine are likely to get taken down sooner rather than later.

Manton needs to go. I know Cauldron decided to keep him around for whatever reason was going through Doctor Mother's head, but the world does not need Siberian. The others? Shatterbird and Burnscar are unlikely to survive long without the Nine, and who the fuck knows what Mannequin will do.

For now, I put it out of my head and relax. These family breakfasts are nice, and honestly, they help keep me sane, and adding Riley to the mix has gone surprisingly well. She's going to Arcadia High's middle school equivalent, just down the road, so we go to school together. Vista and Dinah Alcott are both students there, but Dinah doesn't seem to have powers here; she's just an ordinary little girl.

I've cheated a little, using my powers to make a tiny change for my own convenience. I got myself a driver's license. It's perfectly legal because in the new past I took my lessons and passed my test. I just wanted to speed things up since I had my license in my world. Angela knows I 'cheated' but at the end of the day, it's going to be better for me to have it and she knows I do have the skill.

Buying a car and making it legitimate with my power was another 'waste' of points, but with theAdventurers' Guild all set up, the race tournament prepared and the tickets handled, I can stop being so strict on myself. Angela even agreed that I should do it, since she's a big believer in me relaxing more.

I did get a little carried away by picking the Regalia from Final Fantasy XV, but that game doesn't exist in this world and besides, both Angela and 'my parents' in this world were making a lot of money. Officially, I inherited the very nice, very expensive car from my rich English parents.

Of course, it took me about ten minutes of admiring the amazing car to realise the problem with owning such a car in Brockton Bay, since it's just asking to be stolen, but I do live on the same street as New Wave in the richer parts of Brockton Bay so I can get away with some lavishness.

It's already clear that we're loaded by Brockton standards, since Angela is both a genius medical researcher and one of the best surgeons in the world. The tech she invented has made her very rich, even though she tries to keep the prices lower. The medical industry doesn't fuck around. If she wanted to be, she'd be a billionaire. Instead, she's a mere millionaire (and donates much of it to charity). She really is an angel.

Setting off for school, I humour Riley and put the roof down on the Regalia for the drive, despite it being a chilly January morning. She's been acting more like the child she actually is lately, but I think she's just enjoying her new lease on life.

The radio talks about Clockblocker's new pet as we drive into school, making Riley giggle, and I see the way my car attracts attention as we pull into Arcadia's parking lot.

As we get out, I say goodbye to Riley as she heads over to her school with a highly amused expression. She told me that she corrected the teacher in Biology yesterday, but had to use the excuse of being Angela's niece to explain her advanced knowledge since she actually has it from cutting open so many people.

"Damn, Sol. Is that yours?" Vicky asks, making me nod.

"It was my father's. Took a little while for it to make it across the pond," I explain, watching her face drop slightly at the reminder of my backstory.

"Here I was thinking that I needed to go into medicine if Miss Ziegler is making that kind of money," Vicky jokes, making Amy roll her eyes.

"I think you put too many people in the hospital for that. Kinda goes against the Hippocratic oath," Amy drawls.

"I'll just swear the hypocritical oath instead," Vicky waves off with a grin. "Who was the cutie with you this morning? I saw you getting off the bus with her yesterday, but didn't get a chance to ask."

"That's Riley, she's my cousin, who is also living with Aunt Angela. She likes taking in strays, apparently," I joke after a moment, seeing some recognition in Amy's eyes.

"I heard about that. She lost her parents to the Nine, right?" Amy asks, her voice surprisingly soft compared to her usual snarky tone.

"Yeah, our family is a little cursed," I say with a wry smile. "Still, we've landed on our feet, and it's been nice to get to know her. We're both lucky to have Angela."

Which is honestly true, powers/summoning aside.

Heading into class, I take a moment to wonder why Vicky insists on spending time with me. She has a lot of friends, but she's made a habit of coming and talking to me every day, and I don't think this is just her being nice to the new kid.

Dennis looks out for me because he feels a responsibility to watch over Angela's nephew after she saved his father's life. Her presence had helped boost the medical tech levels, which is something I hadn't considered when I designed her background. So I understand why he comes up to me when he spots me walking to my locker, a grin on his face. Something tells me I'd need Angela to surgically remove it since he got a pet dinosaur recently. Kate says the Chief Director ordered Piggot to let him use it, which went as well as you'd expect, given that Piggot was told to use a parahuman-created biological weapon. I'm no Nilbog, but the summons I've shown have put her on edge, and the whole ancient forest has only added to her paranoia.

Dennis yaps a lot, but he's a fun guy to spend my time with at school. Still, Vicky hangs around like a bad odour, and it does put me on edge, to be honest. I am almost certain that she knows I am Azuth, or at least very much suspects. I guess I gave a little too much away during our patrols together. She's honestly smarter than I ever gave her credit for.

I briefly consider using my powers to remove whatever suspicions she has, before I stop myself with a silent sigh. Vicky is a friend, mastering her to clear up my mistakes is a dick move and I don't think she's going to do anything to expose my identity.

The rest of the school just sees me as another pet project of the Queen of Extroverts, and her attention is distracted by Dean soon enough as classes begin. As I'm working through the easy coursework, I freeze as I feel one of the scavenger hunt tickets being collected.

The identity of the finder makes me pause for a moment before I briefly use my powers to look into her plans. She's not a villain or a hero. Or a rogue, for that matter, because it's just a regular civilian. One of Brockton Bay's large homeless population who lucked into stumbling across one of the tickets after she noticed a discoloured brick in an alleyway she frequents.

If nothing changes, the Empire will get that ticket after they find and kill her. I reach out, nudging her plans slightly as she 'changes' her mind and goes for something more secure than her original plan of trying to sell it herself.

Going back to class, I smile as I check her future again and find a far smoother outcome. She'll live and get quite the payout. What she does with it is up to her; it's enough for a second chance at life, but it was her drug addiction that caused her to end up on the streets. I'm not going to waste points on mastering her into fixing her life. It'll be up to her to defeat the demons that led to her situation.

Instead of trying to sell it herself, she makes her way to a library and uses their computer to contact Number Man, who confirms the authenticity and has someone sent to pick her up within the hour. Number Man will handle the auction for that ticket, and I can already see whose hands it will end up in.

Accord, who happens to owe Cauldron a debt. Funny how that works. It's not perfect, but I'll allow it since Accord is a far better person to get access to the adventurer's guild than Iron Rain. Cauldron will use Accord to test the adventurer's guild, instead of using the ticket themselves.

By the time lunch rolls around, the school is already full of whispers and gossip about the upcoming auction. The cape scene gets a lot of attention, and Azuth is the biggest topic at the moment, even with the Slaughterhouse Nine falling apart.

My declaration has caused the intended effect. The capes of Brockton Bay are being super careful at the moment, because any civilian deaths could cause their entire organisation to be blacklisted from my games. I am effectively an arms dealer, offering a way for every group to increase their powers and any group that gets blacklisted will find themselves falling behind as their rivals get access to my stock.

Iron Rain is rumoured to have locked Hookwolf, Stormtiger and Cricket up for the week. Put them in the naughty time-out corner because she can't count on them managing to go an entire week without killing someone.

Vicky is careful not to look at me as Azuth is brought up, but she's a little too obvious. She's clever, but she's not exactly subtle. Yeah, she either knows or very much suspects.

– Victoria Dallon (Glory Girl) –

Solomon was a fairly serious boy, which was odd because he was much more playful as Azuth. Maybe he felt more confident in what she was almost certain was his cape identity. He also kept everyone at arm's length, despite Dennis's best efforts to drag him further into their friend group. He also constantly seemed to zone out, staring off into nothing until someone else got his attention.

"Hey, Sol!" Vicky shouted, getting his attention as lunch came to an end. Sol tended to slip away quickly. She didn't think it was that he didn't like them, in fact, he seemed to get along with Dennis pretty well, joking around lightly and playing along with Dennis'… Dennis-ness. It was more like Solomon was carrying way too much on his shoulders, she recognised the look as the same one Amy wore when she thought nobody was watching.

If Doctor Ziegler hadn't put her foot down and set a strict schedule for Amy's healing, Amy would have worked herself to death and still not thought she'd done enough.

"What's up?" Sol asked, turning to her with a slightly guarded look.

"Are you free after school this Friday?" Vicky asked with a grin, making him blink in surprise at her question. She knew it sounded like she was about to ask him on a date, and his gaze flickered to Dean for a moment.

"Probably? I don't have anything planned yet, anyway," Sol admitted, making her beam.

"Perfect! So, I kinda set up a double-date for me and Amy, but her date totally ghosted her after she got a tiny bit snarky, and I already have the table booked and everything, so~" Vicky trailed off, pulling Amy against her, who just sighed tiredly. "I don't suppose you're willing to fill in for the night?"

"I'm not entirely sure I'm Amy's type," Sol said with a small smile, making her wave off his complaints.

"Nah, you're fine. You've got that cute boy-next-door charm, and you are basically next door since you live just down the street," Vicky said, her master plan of setting Azuth up with her sister going smoothly as Amy sighed.

"You're fine. Trust me, she's set me up with worse, and she isn't going to give up," Amy finally admitted.

"Really? I kinda thought you preferred girls, to be honest," Sol said, making Vicky laugh.

"Seriously? Why would you think that? Nah, I wouldn't be setting my lil sis up with guys if she liked girls," Vicky waved off. "I think I'd know if my sister was-"

She trailed off, feeling the way Amy had stiffened with wide eyes and a burning red face, shrinking in on herself.

"Wait, seriously?" Vicky asked, gaping like a fish as Amy mumbled something before giving Sol a dirty look. "...you know, I'm starting to understand why you haven't gone on second dates with any of the blind dates I set up for you."

"Did you consider it was because most of them were Dean's rich douchebag friends?" Amy grumbled, giving Sol an annoyed look. "But yes, neither Solomon, nor any of the other dates you kindly picked for me, are my type."

And her master plan went off the rails, the train derailing and crashing into a hillside as she facepalmed. How the hell did Solomon realise that before she did?

"Sorry, Amy. I'm pretty good at reading people, and I'd rather date someone who actually finds me attractive," Sol said, making Amy shrug.

"I'd almost thank you for ending Vicky's attempts, but I suspect she'll find a girl to take your place before the day's over," Amy sighed, her tone deadpan.

Okay, yeah, she had a few in mind, but that wasn't the point.

Well, shit. So much for that brilliant idea. Time for plan B.

Was Crystal still single?

Watching as Amy and Sol chatted on their way to their next class, she shrugged. This hadn't gone exactly as she wanted, but Amy seemed to be opening up to him (maybe because of his connection to her personal idol), and Sol seemed happy enough to chat with her.

She'd take that as a minor victory.

– Solomon White (Azuth) –

"Glory Girl was trying to set you up with her sister?" Riley asks with a grin as we drive home, making me nod and run a hand through my hair. "She knows, right?"

"Yeah. She doesn't have any actual proof yet, but she highly suspects she's right. Her genius plan to tie Azuth to the heroes was to get me to date Panacea. Plus, she thinks Amy needs to socialise more," I agree.

Maybe it was a dick move to throw Amy under the bus like that, and I was a little tempted to accept and try to win over Panacea but I checked and this Pan-Pan shares her canon taboo attraction to Vicky, and other hot blonde girls. The only reason she'd want to go home with me is for a chance to see Angela.

"Were you tempted?" Riley asks with a curious grin, making me roll my eyes.

"Yeah, obviously. Amy might not be as traditionally beautiful as her sister, but she's still seriously cute," I admit, making her pause for a moment. "It's not like I have time for dating with everything that's going on."

"If you want to fuck her, you could give me a shapeshifting power, I don't mind looking like her for the night," Riley offered, her tone casual as I damn-near crash the car at her bland offer. "Or Aunt Angela, if you'd prefer."

"Riley!" I say, making her pause.

"What?" Riley asks, almost sounding genuinely confused at my response. "I said you could use me however you wanted."

"You're a child," I remind her, making her shrug.

"Physically, maybe. I think it's a little late to worry about my innocence," Riley says with a grim smile.

" I-yeah, I'm not even touching that one. You're my cousin, by blood, after I made the changes, and I didn't recruit you for anything like that," I say, making her shrug casually.

"Uh-huh. Well, the offer is open. Like you said, you haven't had time for dating, and you're kind of pent up, aren't you? I'm really good with biology. Besides, being 'related' doesn't stop you staring at Aunt Angela's ass," Riley points out. "It's not like you have a girlfriend."

"You're one to talk. Where's your boyfriend, Riley?" I ask, making her snort.

"You know what the problem with the boys my age is? They're my age. Like I said, I've not physically been a child for a long time, and I've had to grow up quickly. Spending time with boys my age is physically painful," Riley admits with a shrug. "God, I wish I could take my scalpel to school."

"Please don't," I sigh, wondering what I did to deserve this.

"Don't worry, I'm joking. I'm done killing. Honestly, if you find that I've killed so much as a stray cat, you should kill me immediately, just in case," Riley suggests, entirely serious.

"Honestly? I probably would. You scare me," I admit, making her giggle.

"Now, if you could tell the boys who think pulling my hair is flirting that-" Riley starts, trailing off as the song on the radio cuts off for a breaking news report.

My blood goes cold as we listen to the frantic report that the Birdcage has been busted open, freeing all the worst parahuman prisoners, but my main question is simple. How the fuck did this happen when I warned Alexandria?

Teacher, Marquis, String Theory, and so many more have just been unleashed into the world.

"Well, fuck," Riley says, succinctly describing my thoughts on the matter. "What are we doing?"

"These people are the worst of the worst, scum of the earth. Every day they are free is a day people will suffer. It's time to make my own prison, and a squad to hunt these men and women down and bring them in," I say, wondering how Alexandria and Cauldron dropped the ball this hard.

– Rebecca Costa-Brown (Alexandria) –

As she listened to Dragon's report, she cursed herself.

She'd had Dragon increase her security, but she'd not believed Azuth's claim. The Birdcage was made to be inescapable, one way in and no way out. Only Doormaker was supposed to be able to let people out when they needed them for the final fight, and she had increased the security around him as well.

She'd considered having Dodge killed, since the Toybox member dealt with pocket dimensions, but she'd not considered the biggest threat. The Fairy Queen herself. Ciara had gotten into the prison of her own volition and had shown no interest in leaving.

Until today, when she'd suddenly jumped into action and just started opening portals to let people out. Dragon had raised the alarm, but by the time the directors had gathered, Ciara had emptied the entire prison. She hadn't even sent them all to one place, instead spreading them out across America, often near their original homes.

She should have gone in there herself and personally put down every single prisoner, but she'd hesitated because they could have been useful later. Now, everyone was paying for it.

As the meeting continued, she got a message on a line she gave very few people the number for, and thus one that warranted an immediate check.

'Teacher and the Dragonslayers will use their backdoor to compromise Dragon.'

She showed no hint of her inner thoughts as she sent a message and put her phone away. Azuth's intel was undeniable, and this time she wasn't going to hesitate.

The meeting wasn't even over before she got the response.

'Teacher has been neutralised, I'll deal with the Dragonslayers tonight.'

Contessa was undeniably good at her job, even more so with the buffs from Azuth. If she didn't need Contessa in a million other places, she'd have her hunt down the rest of the breakouts, but Contessa's schedule was far too busy for that.

Still, even as the other Directors spoke about the plans for both the escapees and how to deal with the blow to the PRT and the loss of the Birdcage as a threat, Rebecca's attention was elsewhere.

Azuth had claimed a new Endbringer would attack soon, and that the Endbringers were free from Eidolon's unknowing control, and would start getting stronger with every attack. She'd doubted his information once, and just look how that had gone.

But how did you prepare for an Endbringer you didn't know anything about?

— Bonus Scene — Taylor Hebert

Sitting at home, she felt numb.

The trio were gone. She didn't know if Madison was coming back, but Sophia was going to juvenile prison for breaching her probation. Emma had been pulled out by Alan Barnes, who was blaming everyone except Emma herself.

A lot had been revealed in the past twenty-four hours, including just what had made Emma go so… weird. Sophia had saved Emma from being raped by some ABB thugs, and Emma had basically broken and latched onto Sophia and her creepy predator/prey mindset.

Sophia, her main tormentor, was a fucking hero. A Ward. 'Was' being the key word, as she considered what Miss Militia had told her. Miss Militia and Kate had visited her. She'd raged, she'd cried, and they'd patiently stayed with her as they explained how Sophia had ended up in the Wards to begin with.

She was utterly unsurprised to hear that Sophia had gained powers and immediately became a brutal vigilante. She'd looked up the oldest reports of Shadow Stalker and confirmed that Sophia used to run around shooting people with real crossbow bolts. She was only surprised that Sophia had never gone full villain.

Miss Militia had explained how outnumbered the heroes were, and how the PRT had a duty to try to redeem or rehabilitate villains and at the time, Sophia had just been an edgy anti-hero. They'd admitted that the PRT had failed to properly pay attention to Sophia's actions out of costume.

Sophia wasn't getting another chance, already having her hero career 'retired' as the PRT didn't want to admit that a Ward was going to jail. She'd had to sign a hefty NDA, but she'd also gotten one hell of a payout. Her father had called it hush money and had argued with them a lot, but in the end, they'd been convinced to accept it. Frankly, they needed it, and it was a lot. More than everything they owned combined, a lot.

If Kate hadn't revealed herself, Taylor would probably have been angrier at the PRT. Kate admitted that she hadn't paid enough attention to the rumours around Sophia, and that Sophia had blamed the worst ones on the wanna-be Empire fanboys, something Kate had fallen for as she'd had to deal with the same thing.

Kate had also admitted that a large part of why Sophia had gotten away with it for this long was simply because Kate didn't like spending time with her. Apparently Sophia was not popular amongst the Wards due to her being a general bitch even to her teammates. Kate had joked that Vista had thrown a party when she heard that they were getting rid of Sophia.

Emma was probably going to avoid any actual jail time, since she hadn't actually been there when Sophia attacked her, and it sounded like Alan was moving her to Arcadia or some other school to get her away from 'bad influences'. Her anger at Emma had been deflated slightly, learning what she'd gone through and how Sophia had spewed this 'survivor' poison into her ear. A part of her hoped Alan, or at least Zoe, would force Emma to go to therapy. A bigger part of her just didn't give a shit as long as she never had to see the backstabbing bitch again.

Getting up from the living room couch and heading to the fridge, she wondered how much things were actually going to change. The trio might be gone, but Winslow was still Winslow. Funnily enough, Emma had ruined things again since her father suggested moving her to Arcadia, but following Emma was not something she wanted to do. Clarendon High was too far away, Immaculata High was too rich even with their new payout.

She wasn't even sure if Emma was going to Arcadia; she just didn't want to agree and transfer there just to find Emma waiting for her.

As she got a drink, she froze at the sight of something in her backyard. It was the tiniest glimmer, but it made her pause. Her years as a Brockton Bay native made her stiffen up, before she relaxed. It wasn't someone trying to break in, too small for that, but instead it seemed like some kind of will o'wisp, a faint golden light in the overgrown backyard.

Doing something she probably shouldn't, she put on her slippers and headed out to the dim light with a deep, curious frown. It was moving erratically, and as it was about to leave the garden, she moved forward and tried to grab it, feeling a sudden shot of warmth through her body.

Around her neck, a copper emblem that she vaguely recognised appeared and in the back of her mind, new knowledge appeared. Without thinking, she called on it as a flash of light caused something to appear in front of her.

She stared in confusion. Heracross stared back, the giant blue beetle-like creature wiggling at her as a message played in her mind, congratulating her on finding a Class Fairy and inviting her to the Adventurer's Guild.

…what the fuck?
