Chapter 30 – The Inheritor's Price

Kael knelt in the silence of the ruined chamber. Sweat clung to his brow, his breath shallow and erratic. Ashthane's twisted form had vanished in the clash's wake, leaving behind scorched stone and a single glowing shard—the Legacy Core Fragment. It floated inches above the ground, radiating heat and weight beyond its size.

Kael reached toward it, fingers trembling.

Behind him, Lys limped across the black stone floor, one hand pressed tightly to her bruised ribs. The battle had left her visibly shaken, and her usually sharp expression was etched with worry.

"You alright?" she asked, voice low but steady.

Kael didn't respond at first. He was still staring at the fragment. The air around it shimmered, warping with silent heat. "I'm not sure that word applies anymore."

He gently closed his hand around the shard. A pulse of warmth surged up his arm, and something ancient stirred within him. It wasn't just heat—it was memory. Echoes. Pressure.

The fragment flashed once—and the world around him vanished.

[Memory Fragment: Echo VI]

The stars were burning.

Kael stood beside Vireya on a cliff, the world beneath them cracking with molten fire. Winds tore at their cloaks. Her gaze was distant, fixed on the horizon.

"You're not ready," she said.

He was younger here, uncertain, his shoulders narrower, his voice softer. "But I want to be."

Vireya didn't smile. Her golden eyes shimmered in the heat. "Wanting is not enough. If you take the path of legacy, it will demand everything. Pain will be your language. Fire your breath."

Kael hesitated. "And you? Did you pay it?"

Vireya turned, and for the first time, he saw the cost etched into her expression. "I was ready once. And I failed."

The sky split with flame.

Kael gasped, falling to one knee. The Legacy Core hovered above his palm now, rotating slowly, trailing crimson arcs.

Lys gripped her blade tightly. "The temple's trembling again."

"It's not the temple," Kael said. "It's the legacy."

Warning: Subject must remain conscious

Proceed?

He gritted his teeth. "Do it."

The fragment flared.

Then plunged into his chest.

Kael screamed.

Flames exploded across the chamber. Runes along the floor blazed to life. Lys shielded her eyes, cursing beneath her breath.

Kael's body convulsed. The heat was unbearable—not just physical, but spiritual. Something ancient was trying to claw its way out from within him.

---

He saw nothing. Then everything.

A mountain wrapped in fire. A colossal dragon in chains, roaring against its bonds. An army of silhouettes—warriors with eyes like his, faces lost to time. He saw himself, again and again, in firelight and shadow. His name being shouted, not once—but a thousand different ways.

Kael arched his back. His skin glowed with runes, spiraling outward from his chest, marking his shoulders, neck, spine. They burned—and they bound.

Vireya's voice echoed in the dark.

---

[Memory Fragment: Echo VII]

She stood over a fallen enemy, blade dripping fire.

Kael, younger again, stood a few paces back, eyes wide.

"That wasn't mercy," he whispered.

Vireya didn't turn. "No," she said, voice like crackling embers. "It was the price."

He frowned. "What price?"

She stepped away from the body, shadows clinging to her like regret.

"You'll pay it soon. All inheritors do."

Her silhouette flickered. And for the first time, he saw the pain behind her power.

Lys rushed to his side, her eyes wide. "You're… glowing."

He looked down at his arms. The faint outline of runes shimmered, then faded.

"I feel it," he said. "Like something's… watching from within."

She studied him carefully. "You're not just Kael anymore."

He met her gaze. His eyes shimmered with a deeper crimson now.

"No," he said quietly. "Now I'm something more."

The air in the temple stilled. The trial was over—but the war inside had only just begun.
