Chapter 22 - Chapter 22: Collision

The corridor did not stay quiet for long.

Belphegor moved through it at an unhurried pace, his bare feet making no sound against the cold stone. The air had changed. It was tighter now, charged with intent. Mana clung to the walls like a second skin, faintly humming as the manor's defenses awakened fully.

Voices echoed ahead.

Boots. Steel. Orders being shouted.

He did not slow down.

A squad of guards turned the corner just as he stepped into view. Six of them. Armor reinforced with faintly glowing inscriptions. Not ordinary soldiers.

They saw him at the same time.

"There!" one shouted. "The prisoner!"

They reacted quickly. Too quickly for normal men. Two raised crossbows, already loaded. Another extended a hand, a weak spell forming at his palm.

Belphegor watched them with mild interest.

Then the bolts flew.

He did not dodge.

His hand lifted slightly, almost lazily, and the air around him warped. The moment stretched. The bolts slowed, their speed collapsing into something sluggish and distorted as they entered the invisible field before him.

Chrono Shield.

The projectiles hung for the briefest instant, trembling in place like insects caught in amber.

Then they dropped harmlessly to the ground.

The spellcaster's attack followed, a burst of compressed force that bent strangely as it struck the same invisible distortion. It unraveled before reaching him, dissipating into nothing.

Belphegor lowered his hand.

There was a faint pressure behind his eyes. Not pain. Just resistance. Like something pushing back.

So it isn't free.

His lips curved slightly.

Good.

The guards hesitated.

That hesitation killed them.

Belphegor stepped forward, and the distance between them vanished. His hand closed around the nearest soldier's throat, lifting him off the ground with effortless strength. The man struggled, fingers clawing uselessly at Belphegor's wrist.

"You're slower than the last one," Belphegor said quietly.

Then he snapped the man's neck and let the body drop.

The others reacted immediately. Steel flashed. Two rushed him from the sides while another tried to retreat and regroup.

Belphegor moved through them like a shadow.

A fist drove into one man's chest, the impact caving in armor and sending him crashing into the wall with a dull, final sound. He pivoted, catching the next attacker mid-swing, twisting the man's arm until it broke, then driving him into the ground hard enough to silence him permanently.

The last two broke.

They turned to run.

Belphegor watched them for a moment.

Then he stepped once, shadow folding around him, and reappeared in front of them.

They froze.

For a fraction of a second, their eyes met his.

Then he struck.

Silence returned to the corridor.

Belphegor stood among the bodies, rolling his shoulder slightly as if testing the ease of movement. The faint strain from earlier had already begun to fade.

Not much.

But enough.

He exhaled once, then continued forward.

Behind him, the manor groaned.

Stone shifted somewhere above. Doors slammed. The structure itself was responding now, adjusting like a living thing under command.

---

Several corridors away, Kael stopped abruptly.

"Wait."

The others froze with him.

The air here felt wrong.

Not just tense. Disturbed.

Corin moved first, slipping ahead and crouching near the corner. He leaned just enough to glance down the adjacent hallway, then pulled back, his expression sharper than before.

"…Too late."

Kael stepped forward, ignoring the warning.

The sight that met them was not subtle.

Bodies.

Six of them.

Scattered across the corridor in unnatural positions. The stone wall bore a shallow crater where one had been thrown. Blood had spread unevenly across the floor, already beginning to darken.

Jarek let out a low whistle.

"Well… he's been busy."

Lyra's gaze moved carefully from one body to another. Her expression tightened, not in fear, but in quiet unease.

"These weren't ordinary guards," she said. "Look at the inscriptions."

Corin nodded once. "Enhanced unit. Fast response."

Kael crouched briefly near one of the fallen soldiers, studying the damage.

Clean. Efficient. Overwhelming.

No wasted movement.

He stood again.

"He's not fighting randomly," Kael said. "He's clearing paths."

Jarek grinned. "I told you I like him."

Lyra shot him a look. "You like anyone who hits things harder than you."

"Exactly."

A sudden pulse ran through the corridor.

The torches flared.

Then dimmed.

Corin's head snapped upward. "That's new."

Before anyone could respond, a low grinding sound echoed through the stone.

A section of the corridor behind them shifted.

Stone slid into place.

Sealing it.

Jarek turned. "Well. That's not good."

Another shift echoed ahead.

More movement.

More barriers.

Kael's jaw tightened.

"He's locking the manor down."

---

High above, in the central chamber, Lord Veynar stood before a wide arcane display embedded into the wall. Light flickered across its surface, forming a shifting map of the manor's interior.

Small points of light moved across it.

Some steady.

Some vanishing.

His gaze fixed on one in particular.

A point that did not move like the others.

Too fast.

Too direct.

Each time it advanced, others disappeared.

Veynar's fingers tapped lightly against the arm of his chair.

"Interesting."

A robed figure stood beside him, one of the contracted mages. "My lord, the defense arrays are fully active. We can begin containment."

Veynar's smile was thin.

"Not containment," he said. "Observation."

His eyes remained on the moving point.

"That one… bring him to me alive."

The mage hesitated for a fraction of a second, then bowed.

"As you command."

---

Back in the lower corridors, Kael's group moved quickly now.

The manor was no longer something they could navigate freely. It was reacting. Predicting. Closing around them.

Corin led, adjusting their path constantly.

"Routes are collapsing," he muttered. "He's forcing everything inward."

"Toward the center?" Lyra asked.

"Or toward something worse."

They turned another corner.

And ran straight into resistance.

This group was different.

Not guards.

Mages.

Three of them stood at the far end of the corridor, robes marked with sigils that glowed faintly in the dim light. Energy gathered around their hands before Kael's group had even fully stopped.

"No negotiation," Jarek muttered.

"Obviously," Kael replied.

The first spell came fast.

A lance of condensed force shot forward.

Kael moved instantly, wind bursting beneath his feet as he shifted sideways, the attack slamming into the wall behind him with a violent crack.

"Spread!" he ordered.

Lyra dropped low, forming a barrier of light just as a second spell detonated against it, the impact forcing her back a step.

Corin vanished into the shadows along the wall, already repositioning.

Jarek charged.

He met the next attack head-on, his weapon swinging through the incoming spell with brute force, dispersing it just enough to push through.

Steel met magic.

The corridor filled with motion.

---

Elsewhere, Belphegor paused.

Not because of the noise.

Because of the pattern.

He could feel it now.

The manor wasn't just reacting randomly.

It was guiding.

Shaping movement.

Herding.

His gaze lifted slightly, as if he could see through the stone itself.

"So you've decided to pay attention," he murmured.

The faintest hint of a smile touched his lips.

Good.

That made this more interesting.

A distant clash echoed through the corridors. Steel. Magic. Familiar.

Belphegor tilted his head.

Then stepped forward.

Shadow folded.

The world shifted.

---

The fight was turning.

Kael deflected another spell, but the pressure was building. These weren't ordinary mages. Their coordination was tight, their attacks relentless.

Lyra's barrier flickered.

Jarek took a hit that forced him back a full step.

Corin reappeared briefly, striking one of the mages from behind, but the others adjusted instantly, covering the opening.

They were being pushed.

Not overwhelmed yet.

But close.

Kael moved to intercept the next attack aimed at Lyra—

And then something changed.

The mage in front of him stopped.

Not voluntarily.

His body jerked.

A shadow cut across the corridor.

Fast.

Precise.

The mage collapsed before he could react.

Silence hit the space for a fraction of a second.

Then Belphegor stepped forward from the fading darkness.

His expression was calm.

Almost bored.

He did not look at them immediately. His gaze moved briefly over the remaining mages, assessing.

Then he moved.

Two steps.

One strike.

Another body fell.

The last mage tried to retreat.

He did not make it.

When it was over, Belphegor stood still for a moment, then turned slightly.

His eyes met Kael's.

Recognition.

Nothing more.

"You're in my way," Belphegor said.

Kael exhaled once. "Convenient timing."

Belphegor did not respond.

He stepped past them, as if they were no more significant than the bodies now on the ground.

Jarek watched him go, then grinned.

"I really like him."

Lyra did not smile.

"He didn't help us."

Kael's gaze lingered on the direction Belphegor had gone.

"No," he said quietly.

"He didn't."

But his eyes narrowed slightly.

"Which means he had somewhere more important to be."

---

Far above, Veynar's smile widened slightly as the moving point on the map changed direction.

"Found you," he murmured.

And across the manor, the traps began to tighten.
