Chapter 93 High-Speed Cache
After the second round of contact between Xinghai and Cyrix, Su Yuanshan and Chen Jing quickly boarded a plane to Shanghai. Upon landing, the head of the Shanghai branch, Ma Xiangqian, picked them up and drove straight to Jiangyin.
When they arrived at Zhongxin, a small incident occurred.
Due to the high density of electronics factories in Jiangyin, and the variety of operations there, Yuanchip's inspirational youth drama Spring Breeze's Story was being filmed in the area — with strong support from Zhongxin.
That day happened to be the wrap-up party for the crew.
As soon as Chen Jing got out of the car, a sharp-eyed photographer from Hong Kong immediately started begging her to audition. It took Director Zhao himself to come over and rescue her.
Since they had bumped into the wrap-up party, as the investors, they couldn't very well ignore it. They ended up having a wrap party dinner with the crew before getting down to business the next day.
...
At the Jiangyin County Guesthouse.
Wang Chaoxin knocked on Su Yuanshan's hotel room door alone.
Seeing Chen Jing wasn't present, he shook his head with a sigh.
Su Yuanshan, who was making coffee, laughed helplessly:
"Brother Wang, what's with that face?"
"I heard you calling her Sister Jing so warmly... I thought..." Wang plopped down on the sofa, chuckling.
"That kind of dirty thinking must be avoided!" Su Yuanshan sighed dramatically, handing him a cup of coffee and pouring another for himself.
Wang Chaoxin sighed too:
"You have to lock down talents like that!"
Su Yuanshan burst out laughing:
"Haha! As long as I lock you down, that's enough — next year, Yuanchip's structure will be reorganized. Are you planning to keep your current setup, or transfer your shares to Yuanchip?"
"If you transfer," Su Yuanshan smiled, "you'll have to sign a lifetime loyalty contract."
Wang Chaoxin sat up straight in shock:
"Changing the ownership structure? Are you guys planning to go public?"
"No. We're setting up virtual shares — basically a system to bind key personnel and veterans," Su Yuanshan said, sipping his coffee. "Sign up, and you're set until retirement."
Wang Chaoxin nodded slowly:
"If Yuanchip doesn't plan to go public, this approach is pretty good."
"So think about it," Su Yuanshan said. "Ownership will shift, but operations won't. Oh, and you'll get an official executive title at Yuanchip."
"Did you read yesterday's plan?" Su Yuanshan asked, smiling. "What do you think?"
Talking about business, Wang immediately put aside the ownership issue.
"I read it. If Xinghai really can acquire Cyrix and set up manufacturing here, it'll absolutely crush the domestic market."
"I'm very optimistic about the local market," Wang continued.
"The media keeps saying the country's poor, but think about it — reforms have been going on for years. Plenty of people have gotten rich!"
"When we surveyed the VCD market, we found that just in the first half of the year, 600,000 to 700,000 units of video and audio equipment were sold — each set costing 6,000 to 7,000 yuan.
You can't tell me those buyers are poor."
Just then, the doorbell rang.
When Su Yuanshan opened it, he saw Chen Jing, neatly dressed, standing at the door.
"Good morning, President Chen," Wang said, quickly getting up and offering a handshake. "Sorry for not greeting you properly last night. Did you sleep well?"
"Very well, thanks for your concern, President Wang," Chen Jing said, giving Su Yuanshan a glance — the guy was still in slippers, hardly dressed for serious talks.
Once the three sat back down, Wang continued:
"I agree that we should target both business and home users.
But after thinking about it last night — for home users, good marketing and competitive pricing will be enough."
"But for business clients, it's not just about marketing. We'll need the right connections."
Su Yuanshan and Chen Jing exchanged a glance and both nodded.
Chen Jing smiled:
"That's how things work here."
Wang laughed:
"Exactly.
Since our strategy is to monopolize the downstream PC market and challenge upstream suppliers, profits are secondary. Building the market is the real goal."
"So here's my idea — why don't we partner with a few other players?"
"Like Huajing?"
"Huajing's broke — practically dead," Wang said, pointing to the ceiling. "It's all about good relations. Don't forget, government procurement has always been about big contracts.
In the West, countless companies survive on government and military purchases."
Su Yuanshan chuckled:
"By that logic, we should rope in Electronics Tech."
He was thinking about how companies like Founder and Tongfang later captured valuable institutional contracts with their business-focused PC models.
Though to be fair, Fantasy did have a solid game in PC manufacturing —
their extensive after-sales service networks and close Intel partnerships made them a favorite among first-time PC buyers.
"Electronics Tech is great — plenty of talent and good technical depth," Wang said, laughing.
"We can help them earn some side income too."
"Alright. You take the lead on this project. Yuanchip will stay in the background."
After wrapping up that discussion, Su Yuanshan and Chen Jing exchanged another glance.
"President Wang, let's talk about Yuanzhong Microelectronics next," Chen Jing said, smoothly taking over.
Wang blinked in confusion:
"Yuanzhong? What's wrong over there?"
Chen Jing smiled:
"Nothing's wrong. Development and planning are going great — location is excellent too, covering the entire Yangtze River economic circle."
"Yes, we spent a long time choosing it carefully," Wang said, then glanced at Su Yuanshan:
"Brother Su, what's the real issue? Aren't we on the same team?"
Both Su Yuanshan and Chen Jing burst into laughter at that.
Chen Jing explained:
"Compared to Yuanchip's IC design division, how's Yuanzhong's technical level?"
Wang thought for a moment, then glanced at Su Yuanshan:
"With Little Su around, who dares brag about technical level?"
"Hehe. Don't be modest," Chen Jing said, smiling faintly.
"Can Yuanzhong handle high-speed cache (SRAM) design?"
"..."
Wang fell silent.
Although he had switched into the tech world later in life, after partnering with Yuanchip, he had aggressively educated himself.
He knew exactly what a high-speed cache was.
"No way," Wang said bluntly.
"They can only handle simple IC designs."
"In that case... Yuanchip will send a team over to lead the cache design," Chen Jing said, shooting Su Yuanshan a brief glance.
"He's too polite to say it himself, so I'm saying it."
Wang looked at Su Yuanshan in surprise, thought for a moment, and then blurted out:
"Holy shit!"
