Chapter 137 - Chapter 134- Shared Smiles

The restaurant hummed with life, the soft clatter of dishes blending with muted conversations and occasional laughter. The scent of braised pork and fragrant vegetables lingered in the air, mingling with the faint aroma of freshly steamed buns. Children's giggles skipped across the room, punctuated by the occasional clink of a teacup. Elderly couples leaned close to one another, sharing whispers with gentle smiles, and young friends leaned across tables in animated discussion, their voices rising and falling like a melody of normalcy and contentment.

Jia Lan sat at the table, hands folded neatly in her lap, observing it all. For a moment, the world felt slow, gentle, and entirely comfortable. There was a warmth here, unforced, unhurried, a feeling she hadn't realized she had been craving during her long week of study and solitude.

Shen Mingrui returned shortly, carrying a tray of dishes himself, his mischievous grin lighting up his handsome features.

"You must be hungry," he said, setting the tray down before her. The aroma of the food hit her immediately rich, savory, and tantalizing. "I told the chef to make us something special. Don't say I didn't take care of you today, Lan Lan."

Jia Lan raised a perfectly arched eyebrow, a faint smile tugging at the corner of her lips. "Special, huh? Do you always use your connections to impress girls at restaurants?"

He leaned slightly closer, eyes twinkling with humor. "Not just any girl. Only the ones worth pedaling a bicycle for."

Her cheeks warmed ever so slightly, though she maintained her composed demeanor, picking up her chopsticks with elegant precision. "Smooth talker. Let's see if the food is as good as your words."

The dishes were a feast for the senses. Braised eggplant glistened with a rich, savory sauce, hand-pulled noodles floated in steaming broth, and small plates of crispy spring rolls and stir-fried greens added vibrant color and texture. Steam curled lazily upward from each dish, carrying aromas that mingled seamlessly with the chatter and the warm lighting of the room.

Shen Mingrui's gaze lingered on her as she tasted the first bite, watching her expressions flicker subtly as flavors unfolded. "Mmm… not bad," Jia Lan said after a pause, savoring the textures. "I'll admit, you did well."

"So you'll let me take credit?" he asked, grinning broadly.

"Half the credit. The chef gets the other half," she replied, suppressing a laugh at his unabashed enthusiasm.

He chuckled, the sound warm and easy, so genuine that it drew her attention back to him, though she tried not to let herself linger too long on the feeling of it. A few diners glanced curiously in their direction, but Shen Mingrui paid them no mind, his focus entirely on her.

As they ate, he peppered the conversation with playful teasing and observations. "You know," he said, leaning slightly forward, his tone low but full of humor, "when you smile like that, it feels like spring has finally come to this little town. Everything looks brighter."

Jia Lan snorted lightly, unable to keep the amused lift from her lips. "You're really not holding back today, are you?"

"Should I?" he countered, mock-serious, eyes twinkling. "If I don't work hard now, someone else might notice you first. I can't risk that."

Her chopsticks hovered in midair for a fraction of a second, her lips curving into a small, almost imperceptible smile. His words were teasing, yet there was a sincerity underneath that she couldn't quite ignore, and it made her heart beat a little faster than usual.

Shen Mingrui leaned back, eyes catching the soft overhead light. "Since you told me about your family the today, I suppose it's only fair I return the favor," he said, his grin playful yet confident.

Jia Lan tilted her head, feigning curiosity. "Oh? Are we trading family stories now?"

"Something like that," he replied, a hint of mischief in his voice. "Well… my paternal side the Shen family is quite… respectable. Or at least, that's the way everyone likes to present it."

Jia Lan's lips curved into a faint smile, intrigued. "Respectable how?"

He straightened slightly, as if reciting a carefully rehearsed biography. "My grandfather retired as a high-ranking officer in the army. A big name back then. My grandmother… she's a homemaker, keeps the household running, as all grandmothers do." His eyes flicked toward her, playful. "Then my father he has an elder brother, three sisters, and their children. But we don't all live together. No mandatory Sunday dinners, no arguing over the remote, no petty squabbles. Everyone does their own thing."

Jia Lan's lips curved softly. "So everyone lives independently?"

"Exactly," he said, nodding. "Rarely do we meet, but when we do, it's pleasant enough. I can appreciate the peace it brings. And honestly, it makes life simpler, being the only son. Though my parents… they still find subtle ways to remind me of their wisdom every now and then."

Jia Lan chuckled softly, shaking her head in quiet amusement. "Sounds peaceful… yet lonely."

"Peaceful, yes," he agreed, his tone softening. "Lonely… sometimes. Which is why having someone to share moments with like today...makes everything brighter."

Her cheeks warmed imperceptibly. She looked down, fingering the edge of her napkin, but didn't break her composure. "Bright, huh?"

"Perhaps it is," he said, leaning forward slightly, eyes catching hers. "Or perhaps it's just an observation from someone who notices small details."

They shared a moment of comfortable silence, letting the gentle hum of the restaurant fade into the background. Shen Mingrui's attention never wavered, and Jia Lan, despite herself, found a quiet warmth settling in her chest. The simplicity of it the unforced companionship, the attention, the laughter was a balm after her long week of study and routine.

The meal continued with easy conversation. Shen Mingrui found small ways to keep her engaged, pointing out dishes, commenting on textures, and sharing small anecdotes from his own experiences. His voice had a rhythm that drew her in, sometimes teasing, sometimes thoughtful, always light. Jia Lan found herself responding with laughter more often than she expected, her composure gradually relaxing as the hours passed.

Even the small, mundane gestures held a subtle charm. The way he poured tea with careful attention, the way he offered her a taste of the noodles first, the way he leaned just enough to whisper a joke without others hearing all of it built a quiet intimacy.

By the time they finished, the sun had dipped lower outside, casting golden streaks across the windows, painting the restaurant in soft amber light. Jia Lan felt a contented heaviness in her limbs, a rare relaxation after the week's constant focus on study. Shen Mingrui, still smiling, finally leaned back in his chair, satisfied.

"You know," he said softly, "I think the chef was a little nervous meeting me. He's lucky you like his cooking otherwise, I might have had to eat all of it myself."

Jia Lan laughed quietly, shaking her head. "You really have a way of turning even a lunch into a performance, don't you?"

"Only when the audience is worth it," he replied, eyes gleaming with quiet sincerity. "It's not often someone can make a simple lunch feel… memorable."

And in that moment, with the warm glow of the restaurant, the aroma of food still lingering, and the soft laughter and murmurs around them, Jia Lan realized something quietly profound: she didn't need grand gestures to feel seen. Sometimes, it was the small attentions, the thoughtful words, the shared silences, and the subtle care that left the deepest impression.

Shen Mingrui's attention was steady, sincere, and utterly unforced, and as they left the restaurant later, bicycles ready, the world outside seemed brighter than before. The streets were quieter than during the week, the air crisp but gentle, and Jia Lan felt a rare and unexpected happiness bloom quietly in her chest a feeling that, try as she might, she could not quite suppress.
