Chapter 8 - The Empire Test

When the Lion meets the Star.

April 2021 – Coverciano, Italy

Italian National Football Centre

The air was thick with spring tension in Florence.

The U15 Italy squad was back together, buzzing with anticipation. This wasn't just another friendly. It was a statement game — against England.

The English FA had flown over a strong squad — tall, fast, and drilled to perfection. Rumors swirled that several of their boys were already on U18 radars.

But Enzo?

He had something else to prove.

"I want to show them I'm more than just flair."

Before Kickoff

The stands weren't going to be filled with just parents and coaches this time.

AC Milan's head of youth development was flying in.

So was a scout from Manchester City.

Barcelona's La Masia sent someone.

Even Rudi Völler, from Germany's national setup, was rumored to be observing.

Coach Zaccarelli kept the team grounded.

"They came to watch you. Good. But we didn't train to be watched. We trained to win."

Still… the tension was there. Silent. Heavy.

The Match Day – Italy vs. England U15

Enzo pulled the blue shirt over his head again.

#11 – VITO

This time, he was starting on the left wing — his preferred side, cutting in on his right foot.

The England team was stacked:

• A 6'1" center-back from Arsenal

• A lightning-quick winger from Chelsea

• And a midfield general from Manchester United, wearing the captain's armband

As they walked out for the anthems, Enzo spotted familiar faces in the crowd — scouts, photographers, agents… and his father.

Matteo Vito stood quietly with sunglasses, hands clasped, not smiling. Watching.

Kickoff – England Strike First

From the first whistle, England pressed hard.

In the 5th minute, their number 7 picked off a lazy pass and slotted home calmly. 0–1.

Italy looked stunned.

Zaccarelli barked instructions, but the English midfield trio suffocated space.

Enzo barely touched the ball in the opening 10 minutes.

Minute 14 – The Spark

Then came the shift.

The Italian right-back intercepted a pass and launched a long diagonal.

Enzo took it out of the sky with a velvet touch, let it bounce once, then danced past his full-back with a sharp feint and burst of acceleration.

The crowd gasped.

He cut inside. Shot with venom.

Saved!

But the rebound fell to Italy's striker, who tapped it in. 1–1.

The assist wasn't his — but the moment was.

Minute 26 – A Glimpse of the Alien

Now Enzo had rhythm. The ball stuck to his boots like glue.

He nutmegged England's right-back.

Then spun past their midfield anchor.

Even the referee smiled at one move.

On the sideline, a Barcelona scout scribbled three words on his pad:

"Not normal. Alien."

In the 35th minute, Enzo received the ball near the left corner flag. He paused.

Three England players boxed him in.

What happened next would be shared across youth football Twitter for months.

Drag back.

Heel flick.

Step over.

Burst.

He broke past all three.

Then — as if it were nothing — he chipped a soft cross into the box.

Italy's striker didn't miss.

2–1.

Second Half – The Challenge

Deepens

England came back with fury.

Their left-winger caused chaos, drawing a penalty in the 50th minute.

2–2.

Zaccarelli made a few substitutions, but left Enzo on.

By now, he was marked by two players.

Still — he fought. Not with anger. With joy.

Minute 61 – The Moment

A poor English clearance fell to Italy's holding midfielder. One touch, forward ball.

Enzo checked his run, took it in stride, 30 yards out.

A glance. A breath.

He struck it. Hard. With curve and venom.

The ball curled past the outstretched keeper and slammed into the top corner.

3–2.

He sprinted to the corner flag, sliding on his knees, fingers pointing to the sky. His teammates swarmed him.

In the stands, Matteo Vito clenched his jaw.

Not from nerves — from pride

.

Final Whistle – Italy 3 : England 2

As the teams shook hands, a Manchester City scout whispered to the Barcelona man:

"He's 13… but he plays like he's 23."

"He's not just a baller," the Spaniard replied.

"He's born for the spotlight."

After the Game – Pressure Mounts

Back in the dressing room, the atmosphere was electric.

Enzo sat with his boots off, socks wet, heart full.

Coach Zaccarelli approached and dropped a hand on his shoulder.

"You didn't play for the scouts. You played for the crest. That's the difference."

Later That Night – One Conversation

In the hotel hallway, Matteo pulled Enzo aside.

"You made the country proud tonight."

Enzo shrugged, quietly. "I just did what I love."

"Offers will come. Big ones. But remember this game. Remember this feeling."

Enzo nodded.

Then he whispered.

"I don't want to be famous. I want to be free… on the pitch."

Matteo smiled. "That's how legends are born."
