Even if those encounters had been akin to a game of "cat and mouse," with Minamoto merely "toying" with them, they had believed they could discern something.

"Minamoto, can you see clearly?" Tobirama couldn't resist asking Kitagawa Minamoto, who had remained silent. His question drew the attention of the others, who turned to look at Minamoto as well.
