Back to the present...
At the cell, A.D. looked at David. "I have the cure. You only have to spread it in the air from that machine."
"I'll try," David promised. Just then, guards approached, and David quickly left.
The next morning, A.D. was brought before Marsh. At the breakfast table, Marsh sat with Sharleen. A.D. was forcibly seated, his hands cuffed. "You have one last chance," Marsh snarled, leaning closer. "Tell me, ally with us, or I'll kill you right here."
Suddenly, an alarm blared. "Too!" A prisoner had escaped from his cell. Marsh stood up and rushed to the security room. A.D., Sharleen, and one armed guard were left in the room.
Unexpectedly, the escaped prisoner appeared, swiftly killing the guard and aiming his gun at Sharleen. Just as he was about to fire, A.D. lunged, placing himself between Sharleen and the bullet. The shot hit him squarely in the shoulder. A guard quickly arrived, tackling and arresting the prisoner. Marsh returned, seeing A.D. slumped against the table, blood seeping from his shoulder. Sharleen was in shock, tears welling in her eyes for A.D. Marsh, enraged, took out his gun and killed the prisoner on the spot.
A.D. was quickly medicated, then thrown back into his cell. Sharleen tried to visit him later to talk, but Marsh stopped her. The whole day passed.
Chapter : A Desperate Escape
Late that night, David came to meet A.D., holding a set of keys to his cell. A guard spotted him. Without hesitation, David unlocked A.D.'s cell, grabbed him, and they bolted through a secret passageway. They quickly got into a waiting vehicle David had arranged and sped towards Jane's location.
On the road, A.D., wincing from his still-fresh wound, asked David, "Why did you do that? We have to end this virus."
"No, I had to do that," David retorted, his eyes on the road. "They were planning to kill you tomorrow, and how could I do this while watching you die right before my eyes?"
Suddenly, several cars appeared behind them, lights flashing, guns blazing. David swerved, trying to outrun them, but bullets peppered their vehicle. Their tire was shot, and the car spun out of control, crashing. There was a huge blast.
But... A.D. and David, though injured, had successfully escaped the wreckage. After some time, they reached the gate of Branch B:3, the hijacked base where Jane, Polly, and the others now resided. At the gate, A.D. collapsed, losing consciousness.
"Open the gate! We need help!" David yelled, his voice hoarse. The gatekeeper, unable to see A.D.'s face beneath the blood, hesitated.
Then, Polly appeared, alerted by the commotion. "Who are you, and why are you here? And who is that boy?" she demanded.
"Please help, he's dying!" David pleaded. "He told me to ask for Jane or Polly at the gate."
"Polly, who is he?" the gatekeeper asked. Polly peered closer, then her eyes widened in shock. "Look!" she commanded, her voice cracking.
A.D.'s narrow escape and critical condition create a new urgent crisis. The discovery by Polly at the gate adds immediate suspense.
What happens next at the gate? Do they recognize A.D. despite his injuries? What's the immediate reaction of Jane and the others once they realize it's him?

Chapter : A Fading Hope
Polly's eyes widened, recognition dawning through the grime and blood. "A.D.!" she choked out, tears instantly springing to her eyes. She turned to the gatekeepers, her voice cracking with urgency. "Get them inside! Call the doctor and Jane! Quickly!"
The gate swung open, and the guards, seeing the severity of A.D.'s injuries and Polly's distress, rushed to help David carry the unconscious A.D. inside. The cries for the doctor and Jane echoed through the base, a desperate plea for the man who had given them hope, now teetering on the brink of despair.

Chapter : A Race Against Time
A.D. and David were swiftly taken to a makeshift infirmary within the base. The doctor, a harried but competent woman, immediately began to examine A.D., her face grim.
Meanwhile, in another part of the base, Jane was absorbed in her new task, diligently working with the engineers to assemble the crucial machine. A lady guard approached her. "Polly asked for you," she said.
"Why?" Jane asked, not looking up from her work.
"We found two boys outside the gate," the guard explained.
"Huh! Tell them, after checking, let them in," Jane replied, assuming they were just other refugees.
"Polly said you have to come," the guard insisted, her tone urgent.
"But why?" Jane questioned, a flicker of unease starting to prickle her.
"Those boys were hurt," the lady guard elaborated. "One is in serious condition."
A knot of dread tightened in Jane's stomach. She rushed to the infirmary. Polly stood outside, tears streaming down her face. Jane tried to look into the room, but Polly gently grabbed her hand, her grip surprisingly firm. "Don't," Polly whispered, her voice choked with emotion.
"Who is he?" Jane asked, a cold fear gripping her.
Polly hugged her tightly, sobbing into her shoulder. "He is A.D."
The words struck Jane like a physical blow. Her legs gave way, and she fell to the floor, her own cries mingling with Polly's, the sound of her heartbreak echoing through the tense corridor.
