Chapter 46 - Drums of War

The Rumbling Earth

The ground trembled days before the scouts confirmed it.

Hooves. Hundreds. No, thousands.

From the northern ridgelines to the eastern valleys, the Empire's banners appeared like waves of ink pouring over paper. Red silk danced in the wind. Armored divisions of infantry, cavalry, and siege engineers made their way toward Zhaoling's border.

From the ramparts, the people watched with silent dread. The storm was no longer coming.

It was here.

Zhaoling Awakens

Lü Bu stood on the tower walls as dawn broke, a black cloak around his shoulders. His eyes burned—not with fear, but with clarity.

"Sound the horns," he said to Han Jie beside him. "Call the city to arms."

The war horns of Zhaoling screamed across the land—low, deep, and unrelenting. Like the roar of a waking beast.

Within hours:

The barracks were emptied.

Archers took their posts.m

Farmers who had trained in secret pulled out the weapons hidden in hay bales.

Mothers placed cold metal into trembling hands—sons who would now defend the walls their fathers had built.

Zhaoling was no longer a quiet borderland.

It was a fortress.

The War Council

Inside the newly completed War College, Lü Bu sat with his closest commanders.

Wei Yun, calm and steel-eyed.

Han Jie, aggressive and focused.

Lin Zhao, voice of reason and eyes of the shadows.

Lady Mei, armored and proud, speaking for the displaced fighters from the eastern isles.

Fang Sihan, the new general, silent but calculating.

A detailed map of the region lay before them, inked with fresh updates from the scouts.

"Three enemy battalions from the north," Lin Zhao began. "Each over two thousand strong. Siege towers are being assembled thirty li away."

"And from the east," Mei added, "the White Serpent mercenaries are closing in. Fast. Unpredictable."

Lü Bu took it all in.

"They want to break our spirit before the battle begins," he said. "We won't let them."

Fortifying the City

The next day, construction began—not to build, but to reinforce.

Every tower was doubled in height.

Boiling oil reserves were created at key choke points.

The blacksmiths forged repeating crossbows, modified from ancient blueprints found in the archives.

Secret tunnels were dug beneath the city square, allowing movement between barracks without exposure.

Even children played their role, running messages and preparing cloth bandages from old robes.

Lü Bu oversaw it all.

He trained by day, walking the walls, inspecting formations.

He trained by night, alone, in the inner courtyard where only moonlight bore witness to his growing strength.

"When the storm breaks," he whispered to himself, sweat dripping from his brow, "I must be the wall that does not bend."

The White Serpents Arrive

On the fourth morning, thunder cracked—but there was no rain.

It was the sound of the White Serpents.

The infamous mercenary force had arrived at the outer woods, dressed in gray-black armor with serpent sigils etched across their chestplates.

Their leader, Kael the Viper, rode forward, casually dragging a banner behind his horse.

It was a Zhaoling banner—burned and stained with blood.

"Come out, boy," Kael shouted. "I hear you're brave. I want to see it with my own eyes… before I paint your gates with your lungs."

The gates remained closed.

But from the walls, Lü Bu stepped forward. No golden armor. No king's robe.

Just a black cloak, a longspear in his hand, and fire in his voice.

"You'll see me soon enough," he said, voice loud and calm. "But when you do, it won't be on your terms."

"It will be when I bury your name in this soil."

Kael laughed.

But it was not the kind of laugh a confident man gave.

It was the kind of laugh you make when you suddenly feel something sharp behind the mask.

A City That Believes

That night, the fires across Zhaoling burned brighter than ever. Not from fear, but from preparation. From resolve.

Young men with trembling hands listened to Lady Mei speak of honor and unity.

Veterans stood side by side with farmers, teaching them how to hold the line.

And Lü Bu?

He walked the wall, greeting each outpost, shaking the hand of every soldier.

"You are not expendable," he told them. "You are not a number."

"You are Zhaoling."

"And so long as we stand, the Empire will know that we do not break."

The Spirit of the City

As the moon rose, a light snowfall drifted across the quiet camps.

Within his command room, Lü Bu opened the system panel for the first time in days. A new message blinked at the top of the screen.

[System Update – Loyalty Unlocked]

Zhaoling's Spirit is Rising. The People Believe.

And just beneath it:

You are no longer alone.
