Chapter 16 - Chapter 16: Shadows Stir

The moment Lior grasped the Heart shard, a tremor ran through the Twilight Veil — subtle at first, then growing into a low rumble that shook the very ground beneath their feet. The shimmering forest dimmed, and shadows lengthened unnaturally, crawling like dark fingers over the radiant light.

Soren's face tightened with concern. "The Heart shard's power echoes beyond this realm. Forces long dormant are waking... and they are not pleased."

Mira's eyes darted to the tree line, where movement flickered like smoke. "We're not alone."

From the underbrush emerged shapes — twisted and malformed, shadows fused with remnants of forgotten dreams. They moved silently but with intent, eyes glowing faintly red, their forms ever-shifting and grotesque.

"These are the Wraithborn," Rhéa said grimly. "Dreams corrupted by despair and hatred. They feed on hope and will stop at nothing to consume the shards."

---

The group immediately formed a circle, the shards' light casting a protective glow around them. Soren raised the crystalline orb, its blue light flaring and slicing through the gathering gloom.

"Hold the line!" Lior shouted, stepping forward with the black and Heart shards blazing in his hands. The light lashed out, searing the nearest Wraithborn as Mira and Rhéa attacked from flanks, blades flashing and spells crackling.

The battle was fierce — the Wraithborn relentless in their assault, their forms shifting and dissolving only to reassemble moments later. Every strike seemed to wound but not destroy them completely.

---

As exhaustion began to seep in, Lior noticed a large figure emerging from the shadows, taller and darker than the rest, eyes burning with malice. Its voice was a growl that reverberated in his chest.

"I am Noxis, Herald of the Forgotten," it declared. "The Heart shard belongs to the void."

With a roar, Noxis lunged, shadows swirling in a vortex around him. Lior barely raised the shards in time to block the crushing blow, the force sending shockwaves through the clearing.

---

Mira darted in, slashing at Noxis's side, but the creature's form flickered and shifted, evading her strike.

Soren chanted softly, the orb glowing brighter as a barrier of light encased the group, holding the Wraithborn at bay but unable to stop Noxis's assault.

Lior gritted his teeth, focusing all his will on the shards' power. The Heart shard flared, sending ripples of pure energy outward, pushing Noxis back.

But the creature snarled, retreating only to dissolve into a cloud of shadows that vanished into the forest.

---

Breathing heavily, the group regrouped, the eerie silence pressing down once more.

"We can't stay here," Rhéa said. "Noxis and his Wraithborn will keep coming. We need to move deeper into the Veil — find the next shard before they do."

Soren nodded. "The Heart shard has made us a beacon. But it's also our greatest weapon. We must learn to wield its power — and fast."

Lior looked down at the glowing fragments in his hands, feeling their warmth and weight. The journey had only grown darker, but their resolve burned brighter than ever.

---

As they vanished into the deepening twilight, the Veil whispered around them, carrying a single warning on the wind:

The dream will be broken... unless the light endures.
