He leaned forward again. "You're not telling me the truth. You're either protecting someone… or something. And I'm going to find out which."
Of course I'm protecting the people I love. What else was I supposed to do? I can't just sit here and tell them everything.
If I did, the Coil wouldn't just stop at me….they'd come for everyone.
The room felt too hot. My shirt stuck to my back. I tried to keep my face calm, but my leg wouldn't stop bouncing under the table.
"I…." My throat was dry. "I'm not… protecting anyone." My voice cracked.
Harris tilted his head. "I smell a lie, Ash."
I gripped the edge of the chair so hard my hands ached.
If they figure this out before the Circle moves, it's over.
My chest felt tight.
"I don't…" I swallowed hard. "I don't know what you want me to say."
"I want the truth," Harris said quietly, leaning in. "Before someone else gives it to me."
"I told you everything I know," I whispered. Even I didn't believe the way it sounded.
