Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: The Dungeon of Darkness

The Dungeon of Darkness, the largest construct of underground structure in the entire continent of Asirya. It resided in the far west of the kingdom of Ascador. The only things that existed there were abominations and horrors of the dark.

That was its description in the game, according to Carter's memories.

Carter carefully arranged his knowledge about the level in his head, planning on what his next move should be. His eyes darted from corpses to corpses that were laying on the ground, trying to find a dead man that had a similar frame to him.

He found one. A large man that was around the same height as Carter. His arm was cut off for some unknown reason and dark dry blood filled his neck. He was killed by a precise strike to the neck.

Carter quickly stripped the man of his armor and then his clothes. He let him keep the underwear. Sharing underwear was disgusting so Carter only needed the outfit outside.

A standard padded shirt on top that could help cushion some attack. A long grey pants under that was too ancient, it had too many holes on it. Carter's clothes were better but unfit for this world.

He needed to blend in and avoid unwanted attention. The clothes of the dead man were designed better defensively as well. Carter couldn't care less about the niceness of the clothes if he was dead.

He put on the clothes as quickly as possible. The fabric wasn't washed for days and stinked like a dead mule. Carter felt like he wanted to throw up. The shirt was also missing an entire sleeve but no other shirt could fit him.

"It will do for now. Until I can find better clothes."

Carter then put on the dead man's armor. The man was fatter than him with a big beer belly. His shoulders were also wider. When Carter put on the chest plate, he could feel the plate moving freely due to the size difference.

"This won't do."

Carter looked around once more, trying to find a smaller guy. These dead people were huge so he needed to find someone with a few sizes under him so that their armor could fit Carter.

He found a short guy with perfect armor but no lower body. His legs were completely crushed by the collapse tunnel. Carter stripped him of his armor and put them on.

Wearing armor required proper knowledge. Carter didn't have this so he improvised as best as he could, tying the knot and putting on the plates.

After a short time of struggling, he finally was able to fully armored the upper body. It was easier than he thought, only needed a little tinkering here and there. Next was the leg parts. The short man was crushed half way down so his leg armor was gone. Carter had to use armor from another man to complete his set.

While looking for the leg parts, he noticed something extremely weird. The leader of this group was nowhere to be found.

The man in question was Gaston, the leader of this group of spies from Kintara, an arch nemesis of the neighboring country Ascador. He usually died in the middle of his men with a possibility of having a Stone Tablet on his body to loot for.

But there was no Gaston.

Does this mean he has survived? The progression of this world may be a little different from what I know. Carter thought to himself.

He kept this fact in mind and then continued to find a suitable leg part. He also looted the dead for any valuables.

Nothing significant was found and no usable leg part also.

And then, inside the pocket of a dead spy, Carter was able to take out a particular plant. A bright green and small plant with oval-shaped leaves.

"I can't be mistaken. This is the green herb!" Carter murmurs quietly, making sure not to cause too much noise.

The famous green herb of Darkness and Bloodlust. Its official name in the description was Okium Silikos. The community usually called it the green herb or the silly plant. It was one of the most reliable healing items in the early game.

However, Carter wasn't sure how to exactly use it now that he had become a citizen of this world. In the game, all you needed to do was click on the item, and it would have been used automatically.

No matter. I'll figure out a way to use it eventually.

Carter carefully wrapped the plant inside a cloth and put it inside the empty space in his chest plate.

After looting, it was time for Carter to pick his weapons.

He was a complete virgin in fighting. He hadn't even lifted a knife in his life.

I need to be realistic about this. I don't have any skill or power like the main characters in order to pick fancy weapons. The most reliable weapon for me is...

Carter picked up a spear and a shield.

A spear had range and was easy to use. All you needed to do was stab ahead. A shield was perfect for a beginner. It could buy time for Carter and provide a safe cover to use the spear.

He chose the most pristine spear with no scratch or tear on its pole and a large shield that could cover most of the body, leaving only the bottom lower body to be exposed.

The creatures in this dungeon were vicious and venomous. Rather than having a small and nimble shield that Carter couldn't even make use of effectively, a walking wall was the best option to block all those attacks.

This choice also had its disadvantages as it would hinder Carter's movement greatly.

Carter also took a short sword and strapped it on the left side of his waist. In case the spear and shield failed, it would be his final resort. But then Carter reconsidered. Unlike in the game, he had no limit to how many weapons he could hold on his body.

Carter took two small knives and strapped them behind his waist, concealed and easy to be drawn at any time.

He felt it wasn't enough. He grabbed another mace and wore it on the right side of the waist.

These weapons weren't even a tiny bit of insurance for his peace of mind. But at least Carter knew he could have a chance to survive whatever the darkness threw at him.

And as if the deep, dark dungeon heard his worry, small clicking sounds echoed in the room Carter was in. The sound of the hard exoskeleton layer touching the ground rhythmically.

Carter heard this sound a thousand times. He knew exactly what was coming.

Reaching out of the dark was a long, slender, grey leg with visible white hair on it. The giant spider slowly revealed itself. It has no eyes on its small head.
