Chapter 30 - The Scents of Guilt

Sam jolted upright, lungs dragging in air like he'd just broken the surface of a dark, endless sea. Sweat clung to his skin, dampening the sheets beneath him. His heart pounded loudly in his chest, erratic and wild. He reached instinctively toward the other side of the bed, but it was empty.

Jennette was gone.

Panic twisted in his gut.

He threw the covers off and stumbled toward the clothes hanger, where yesterday's jeans still dangled. His hands worked quickly, fingers burrowing into the front pocket, hunting for the thing his mind couldn't let go of.

There it was.

He pulled it out slowly, the way one might handle something sacred or shameful.
