Chapter 139 - CHAPTER 139

Tsunayashiro Ayana the current head of the Tsunayashiro Clan choosing to enlist in the Eleventh Division was something Gosuke Shigure hadn't expected.

Still, he approved her application without hesitation.

In truth, this was beneficial to him. Having her close would allow him to observe her directly, to determine whether she — as the new Tsunayashiro heir — was truly worthy of wielding the sealed Zanpakutō once known as Yanra Jingden (Yama no Kagami in old records), a blade bound to the Tsunayashiro family's ancient rites.

The new graduates from Shin'ō Academy were being assigned to their respective divisions, and with each passing year, the wheel of time turned ever forward.

The older generation of Shinigami gradually stepped back, while new blood continued to rise to prominence.

Within a blink, Tōsen Kaname — the blind prodigy once known for his quiet conviction — completed his training and graduated. But unlike Ayana, he did not apply to Shigure's Eleventh Division, nor to Aizen's Fifth. Instead, he chose to join the Ninth Division, led by Captain Muguruma Kensei.

"Figures," Shigure muttered to himself when he heard the news.

Perhaps it was because of the Ninth Division's nature — the Public Morals and Discipline Unit, which oversaw investigations and the handling of internal crimes across Seireitei.

For someone like Tōsen, who sought to uphold justice above all else, the Ninth Division was the natural choice. It fit his ideals better than any other division.

"Justice, huh…?" Shigure mused, sipping tea on his barracks veranda. "If only he understood how twisted justice can become in the wrong hands."

He knew, of course, how things might unfold. In the original flow of fate, Tōsen's justice would be corrupted, leading him down Aizen's path of darkness. Whether Shigure's presence in this world could alter that outcome, he didn't know.

And frankly, he wasn't sure it mattered.

"If he chooses Aizen again," Shigure thought, "then that's his decision. I'm not his guardian — and he's not exactly pleasant company, anyway."

He smirked faintly at his own dry humor.

Tōsen's departure wasn't the only notable event that year. Another graduate — a tall, imposing man whose face was hidden beneath a bamboo helmet — had quietly joined the Seventh Division with his captain's approval. His name was Komamura Sajin.

A reclusive soul with a kind heart, Komamura had been one of Tōsen's few true friends at the Academy.

None could have known then that these two — the blind man who sought justice and the wolf who hid his face — would both rise to become captains of the Gotei 13. A pairing of opposites destined to clash in both loyalty and ideology.

Shigure sighed as he gazed toward the Seireitei skyline.

"As the next generation steps forward, I can feel time pressing faster," he murmured. "The flow of events… the weight of the coming storm. Something big is on the horizon."

He drank the last of his tea, eyes thoughtful.

"Now… what was I forgetting?"

The question lingered in his mind, unresolved. He let it go for the moment.

Time passed.

Below Sōkyoku Hill, the training grounds had expanded over the years, becoming a wide testing field for experimental techniques and combat trials.

It was here that Urahara Kisuke finally completed his latest invention — the Shin'eitai Reigai Converter, known more casually as the Soul-Transference Doll.

By using this device, a Shinigami could forcibly manifest the spirit of their Zanpakutō into physical form — effectively materializing it. With that, they could train directly against it, pushing themselves toward mastering Bankai.

However, the process required immense and stable Reiatsu — ideally that of a Captain-class Shinigami — to maintain the construct's form. Without sufficient energy, the manifested spirit would collapse before the training could even begin.

Shigure, Yoruichi, and Kisuke stood together within the field, as preparations were made.

"It's remarkable," Yoruichi said, circling the device. "You've taken the theory of Zanpakutō materialization and made it accessible without the aid of the Spirit King's flow regulators. You're insane, Kisuke."

Urahara grinned beneath the shadow of his hat. "Genius and insanity aren't so different, you know."

Shigure, however, was more analytical. "The concept reminds me of the Quincy Medallion—the device they used to steal Bankai during the Thousand-Year Blood War. Both rely on mimicking or interfering with the Reiatsu wavelength of a manifested Zanpakutō."

Kisuke raised an eyebrow. "That's… an interesting comparison. But mine doesn't steal Bankai — it nurtures it."

"Still," Shigure said, "the principle is similar. Both manipulate the flow of Reiryoku between the soul and the blade."

As he said this, something flickered in the back of his mind — a realization.

The Wandenreich. The "Invisible Empire" still lurking in the shadows of the Soul Society. He had meant to prepare countermeasures after his last discussion with Kisuke and Yoruichi — but the idea had slipped away amid the day-to-day chaos.

He silently cursed himself. "Right. I'll bring it up after this."

For now, he focused on the demonstration.

"Let's begin," Kisuke said, his tone shifting to a rare seriousness. "I'll need your help maintaining the stability of the construct, sensei."

"Understood," Shigure replied.

He stepped forward as Kisuke handed him a compact orb — the device's power core. Shigure infused it with a controlled stream of Captain-class Reiatsu. The air around them rippled as the device activated, drawing ambient Reiryoku into its framework.

Kisuke unsheathed his Zanpakutō and thrust it into the core.

The moment steel met the device, light burst outward.

From within the brilliance, a silhouette emerged — a tall, elegant woman in flowing robes, her hair cascading like ink. Her eyes gleamed with an intelligence both familiar and alien.

Yoruichi whistled low. "So this is your Zanpakutō's spirit, huh? Didn't think she'd look like that."

Kisuke's usual grin faded. His gaze hardened. "Benihime… let's begin."

The woman inclined her head with a soft smile, voice carrying the faintest trace of melancholy.

"As you wish… Kisuke."

And then, their battle began.
