Chapter 4 - Chapter IV — The Silent Covenant

The deeper they ventured, the more the city revealed its hidden life — not just the ruins, but the stories etched into every broken wall, every discarded relic. Shadows pooled in the alleys like dark water, while faint lights flickered from behind barricades of rusted metal and scavenged debris.

Keil and Ray moved cautiously, alert to the subtle signs of movement — whispers in the wind, the soft shuffle of footsteps far off. The city was no longer just a graveyard of machines; it had become a refuge for the forgotten.

Through a narrow, crumbling corridor, they emerged into a small clearing sheltered by the skeletal remains of a collapsed overpass. Here, the air was thick with smoke and the scent of burnt wood. A faint murmur of voices drifted out from makeshift shelters fashioned from scrap and tarps.

Figures emerged from the shadows — ragged, wary, their eyes gleaming with quiet defiance. Children played amid piles of old tech, while elders bartered and shared stories of survival. This was a community born from the ashes, a silent covenant of those left behind by the world's collapse.

Ray's breath caught. "People… they still live here."

Keil nodded, eyes scanning the gathering. "Not just survivors. They've rebuilt, in their own way."

A tall woman stepped forward, her gaze sharp but not unkind. "You're not from the Dust," she said, voice steady. "Why have you come?"

Keil met her eyes, steady and calm. "We seek the truth behind the TechnoWind. We believe it's more than just a machine. It's alive."

The woman considered this, then gestured to the encampment. "Then listen. Our stories may hold pieces of your puzzle."

As night fell, the community shared their tales — of lost cities, of silent wars fought in the shadows, and of a wind that sings through the ruins, carrying whispers of hope and warning.

Keil and Ray listened, the weight of forgotten histories pressing on their shoulders. The city had many voices — and they were only beginning to hear its song.
