The sun peeked through the university windows as Alecia scribbled notes in her pharmacology class, thick glasses still sliding down her nose. Her professor praised her brilliance yet again, making her quietly shrink into her hoodie. She hated attention—especially the wrong kind.
After class, her best friends Mia, Lana, and Jessa dragged her to the campus café. Just as Alecia was about to bite into her cinnamon roll, a black car pulled up, sleek and silent. The door opened, and out stepped Elián Montgomery—tall, devastatingly handsome, and dressed in crisp linen and casual confidence. The billionaire heartthrob of the city. Girls gasped. Phones were raised. But he walked straight to her.
"Alecia, right?" he said with a smile that could melt glaciers. "You left your phone at the coffee shop yesterday."
Alecia blinked. He remembered her name. She barely remembered her own when he looked at her like that.
"Uh... thanks," she muttered, grabbing it awkwardly, trying to ignore the stares.
Elián leaned in slightly. "I also wanted to ask… would you like to join me for lunch sometime?"
Dead. She was dead. Flatline. Her heart had flat-out betrayed her.
Lana choked on her iced matcha. Mia whispered, "Is this real life?"
But before Alecia could answer, her emergency pager buzzed under the table—one she always kept hidden. She glanced at it, eyes sharp.
Emergency surgery needed. Private hospital. VIP patient.
Alecia stood up, clearing her throat, the nerd mask snapping back on. "Sorry, I have… tutoring."
She rushed away, leaving Elián blinking and stunned.
From a distance, he smiled. "Interesting girl."
He watched as she walked away, unaware she was heading straight for her underground hospital suite—the miracle doctor was needed again.
