Chapter 2 - The Deathless One

If you had myopia like Rohan, you could easily mistake the thing in the kitchen staring out the window to be human. Although when he squints his eyes, he can see the inhuman features of this creature. It was roughly six feet tall, nude and bald. Its skin was pale, almost white as snow, but it was covered in boils, cuts, bruises and splashes of the black liquid.

Another thing Rohan had noticed was that it was extremely thin, even thinner than a man who hadn't eaten for a week, to the point that his spine could push against its skin. But the one that captured his attention the most was its long fingers. Its length nearly made it touch the floor, and its nails, which were black in colour, looked sharp as a dagger. In short, whatever this creature was, it was an abomination to nature. A thing that should never exist or even be conceived in the mind.

Rohan could feel his heart quicken and stomach twist at the sight of the creature. Unfortunately, in his frightened shock, he lost his grip on the flashlight, which made a loud sound as it made contact with the wooden floor. Almost instantly, the creature whipped its head around to face him. The thing…it had no eyes, no nose, no ears or anything you would see in a face. The only exception was the mouth, which had large cuts on the side forming a twisted, large grin.

Coming out of its mouth was the black tar-like liquid from the floor. The two didn't make sudden moves; both of them were frozen in place as if they were stopped in time. Rohan knew it was looking at him, despite not having eyes to look, he could feel the creature bore into his form. He doesn't know how long they stayed this way, just staring into each other, waiting for the other to move. Rohan's eyes were stung with tears, and his body started to tremble.

This is all some kind of joke, right? This had to be some kind of fucked dream, he is having. There is no way a creature as vile as that is actually in front of him, staring him down with its non-existent eyes. He needed to get out of here, but how? While he could use the front door, there is no telling how fast this thing is.

It could be even faster than a cheetah for all he knows. Rohan's best chance for him to return back to one of the rooms upstairs and use the locked door to put a barrier between him and this thing. With luck, it would eventually get bored and go away like those animals often do when they can't get to their prey, or he could use the window to exit the house. Rohan lets out a shaky breath, keeping his eyes on the monster as he places his feet on the first step, but that is when all hell breaks loose.

The monster let out a frightening cry, which disturbed Rohan. Not because the noise it made sounded like it came from a monster or any animal, no. It disturbed him because it sounded like the scream of a human being. It rushes at him, claws aimed at him, and he instantly responds by running up the stairs as fast as he can. But it was fast, really fast.

Rohan cried out as he could feel the creature's finger slice his back. The hot, intense pain made him see stars, but he forced himself to go to the nearest room, which was the kids' room. He enters inside, and just before the creature enters, Rohan slams the door on its face. He put his whole weight behind it as the thing forcibly tried to enter. Tears fell down Rohan's face like a waterfall as he prayed for all this to stop. He could hear it scratching or slamming at the door, but it held.

After a few minutes of this, the struggle seemed to stop. But Rohan didn't dare relax; he might not be able to see the monster, but that disgusting smell told him that it was still by the door. This goes on for an eternity before he could hear the squelching footsteps of the creature moving away from the door; eventually, the noise faded along with the rest of the smell. Rohan, though, did not let his guard down, but after a couple more minutes of staying by the door, he finally allowed himself to relax. The adrenaline eventually faded, and now the pain on his back is what grabbed his attention.

He winces as he feels the sting of his hand touching his back. He puts his hand in front of him, showcasing a large amount of his blood dripping from his hand. Rohan suddenly finds himself unable to breathe. There was no way this was happening!? Just what the fuck was that creature. Before Rohan could dwell on it even further, that foul odour returned, allowing for that humanish scream.

Rohan didn't even get the chance to press the door all the way when the door shattered, the force of it sending Rohan crashing into the wall. He screamed as his back slammed against the wall, waves of pain spreading across his body. He whimpered as he crawled to the floor, the creature looking at him. Rohan lifts his hands and shakes his head, eyes pleading. But to his horror, the monster opened its slit mouth revealing razor sharp black teeth, the black liquid spills all over the floor.

Rohan screamed as the monster bats away his arm, creating deep wounds. But it wasn't over, the creature roughly grabbed his hand full of cuts before, with a swift bite, took his index and middle finger away. Rohan cried out, looking in terror at his two missing fingers, it was even showing a bone. The creature sighed in pleasure before a toothy grin formed in its mangled mouth. Before bringing its sharp tooth to Rohan's neck as its finger dug into Rohan's abdomen.

Blood and the black liquid covered the once clean floor. Pain overwhelmed him; nothing existed beyond it. It was far more painful than jumping off the bridge. Though after the third minute, his body starts to grow cold and numb. The pain was great, but at this point, he had gotten used to it somewhat.

His throat felt raw from all the screaming, and he just felt so tired; it was like he had just run multiple marathons in a row. Rohan was ready to go.

The last thing he saw before his eyes closed was the creature sloppily eating his guts and other organs.

Rohan's eyes shot open, and he stumbled forward. He looked around rapidly; he was in the kids' room, but the door wasn't broken and blood didn't litter the floor. Then he grabbed his abdomen, and his fingers, to his relief, all of them were there. His heart quiets down, allowing his tired body to collapse onto the bed. He stared up at the ceiling as he recalled his dream.

It felt so real, he could feel his back being torn, his stomach being grabbed open and the loss of his fingers. And that horrendous smell also stayed in his mind. He didn't even remember sleeping to have a dream, just what in the world happened? Despite knowing it wasn't real, Rohan held himself and whimpered. Rohan knew it was all just a nightmare, nothing more.

Yet he couldn't help but imagine the creature in front of him again, ready to sink its disgusting black teeth into his throat. From now on, Rohan will avoid horror movies like the plague. His eyes grew heavy, he didn't want to sleep on the bed, he had already trespassed and worn their clothes, was he just about to sleep in one of their beds? Still, Rohan was extremely emotionally and mentally tired. He supposed a half-hour nap shouldn't be too much of a big deal?

His eyes now saw only darkness, and he could feel himself slowly drift into the dream realm. Before he could fully sleep, he prayed that he would never have this kind of dream ever again.

The familiar jingle can be heard downstairs as well as the opening of the door.

Rohan's heart drops, and his breath hitches. He shoots back up and looks at the open door with fear. That was all just a dream, right? But then why was a familiar, terrible odor assaulting his nose? He could feel his heart beating; if it were to move any faster, it probably would have exploded. Rohan just stayed there, not moving, still as a statue.

He tried to make as little noise as he could, but he couldn't control how hard he was breathing. Cold sweat poured down his face. This was most certainly real, that thing is real, but then what's going on? The monster killed him, but how did he end up back here with no wounds? There were so many questions and not enough answers.

He heard something go up the stairs slowly.

Oh shit, its coming here.
