Count Cormier and his men targeted the guards at the castle’s front and the sentinels atop the walls by splitting their forces into several groups to evade the onslaught. Damien had chosen Cormier as an emergency measure over his closest confidant, Count Weiss, for a singular reason: Cormier was the finest marksman in all of Swanton. That was also why Damien had chosen him as his escort in a situation where he could not bring an army to Carter.
With each resounding blast of gunfire, another of the castle defenders fell. They were all men loyal to Johannes.
“Advance into the castle!”
At Cormier’s order, his men, armed with firearms and explosives, quickly followed after him. Chloe, however, found herself paralyzed by fear, unable to take a single step.
Laurent quietly moved to her side. “His Majesty will be safe,” he assured her, wiping the sweat from his forehead with the back of his hand. Chloe responded with a firm nod, too tense to utter a word.
