Chloe paused, taken aback by the subtle edge in his otherwise cheerful tone. However, she sensed that abruptly ending their conversation would only cause greater tension. At some point, she would have to make it clear to him that her emotional ties with Gilles had been severed once and for all. After making such a resolution, she offered him a radiant smile.
“I know you well, Your Majesty. You would not allow yourself to be troubled by such trifling sentiments, even in jest.”
“Is that so?” Damien raised an eyebrow, as if asking her to elaborate.
“Indeed. The King I know would reward those who enhance Swanton’s prestige abroad.”
“My apologies if I disappoint you, Chloe, but I am not inclined to confer honors upon Gilles Watteau in my name.”
