“Declan, have you finished reading the book on the history of the Duchy of Carter?” Anna asked.
“I read it for the sixth time while we were aboard the ship. What about you?”
“I’ve only read it once.”
“I thought as much. That in itself is quite an accomplishment for you,” Declan replied, his tone matter-of-fact.
“But I’ve covered the major events well enough with Sofie.” Anna shrugged, her lips forming a taut line. If Declan’s talent lay in methodical study, Anna had a gift for expedient learning. “Don’t worry, Declan. If we ever find ourselves outmatched in knowledge, I’ll persuade Aunt Alice to suggest horse riding, then lead us into a bet.”
“If we do make a wager, I shall be the one to take charge.”
“What?” Anna’s brow creased as she sighed in exasperation. “You know that my equestrian skills far surpass yours. Isn’t it about time you admitted that?”
“I’m only saying this because you might injure yourself. You’re far too competitive for your own good.”
