Sofie could hardly suppress a chuckle at the sight of Anna huffing indignantly as she stood with her hands planted defiantly on her hips. Only a few hours earlier, Anna had attempted to don a façade of maturity as she announced her departure with great solemnity, but she had clearly been unable to overcome her sadness at the news of Sofie leaving.
Could this be what people meant when they said life was unpredictable? Sofie’s thoughts drifted to the days when Chloe had been her governess. When Damien had come to Genevoire in search of Chloe and the day of Chloe’s departure had arrived, she had attempted to run away from home.
Anna whirled around to face Declan. “You must say something as well, Declan!”
“I, too, believe that it would be most improper for our esteemed teacher to journey home unaccompanied after all she has done for us.”
