“I do,” Damien declared without hesitation.
“Why?” Chloe inquired softly.
“Weiss has apprised me of the major events. I also instructed him to inform me of the Queen’s administrative skills without mentioning emotional matters between us…” Damien trailed off, a faint crease appearing on his nose.
Chloe regarded him gently, musing over how Damien had once possessed a far greater range of expressions as a young man.
“It appears you are an exemplary queen consort,” Damien said, his lips twisting into a wry smile that belied a hint of rebellion.
“I am satisfied with that.”
Upon hearing her words, Damien felt an inexplicable knot tighten in his stomach. The curiosity in her gaze as she observed him intently was equally disconcerting.
“What would you have done if I had not accepted you as Queen?”
“I would have returned home.”
Damien’s knife clattered onto the place with a sharp clang, jolting Chloe from her thoughts.
