“You claim not to be a fool, which I gather means you fully comprehend the gravity of your actions,” Damien growled.

Eliza clasped her hands together tightly. “I must insist, all I did was allow an unidentified body into the castle. I had no knowledge of her ladyship’s intentions.”

“How dare you utter such absurdities!”

“She did not tell me of her plans.”

The paper in Damien’s hand crumpled. Eliza could see that his patience was wearing thin.

“Yes,” said Damien. “I am sure she did not wish for harm to befall others, which meant no one could be privy to her scheme.”

But surely, there were those who, in hindsight, had suspected something was strange about the whole matter. All the servants who had resigned after the incident must have found Chloe’s death suspicious. They would also have instantly grasped the danger of any association with the incident.

“She would have known perfectly well that I would not forgive you,” Damien said.
