The enforcers' bodies still lay where Ethan had dropped them the day before, a reminder that someone had stood against Enel and walked away.
The people of Angel Island were still afraid, but the look in their eyes had shifted. The whispers weren't just about fear anymore. They were wondering. Hoping.
Ethan didn't pay them much attention. He wasn't here to play hero. Skypiea was just the next stop on a journey that never seemed to end—but even he could admit something about this place pulled at him. Maybe it was the land in the sky, maybe it was the way the people looked up at the clouds like they might fall any minute.
Maybe it was because Enel called himself a god.
"Gods," Ethan muttered under his breath, standing at the edge of a cloud-drift cliff. "Always the same."
The group had returned to Angel Island to restock. The villagers had grown used to their presence, cautiously friendly now, though always with a bit of nervousness in their voices. Kaya was speaking with an older woman near the well, while Vivi helped carry supplies onto the ship. Robin, as usual, disappeared into the town's quiet corners.
Ethan stood with a shopkeeper who was nervously wrapping up some food and dial supplies.
"You're not planning on going up to the Upper Yard again, are you?" the man asked, eyes darting around.
"I am."
"It's suicide. Enel's priests are nothing compared to him. He can kill you just by thinking about it."
Ethan took the wrapped food and tucked it into his bag. "Hasn't happened yet."
The man opened his mouth to argue, then closed it. He nodded and stepped back. "You're not from here, are you?"
"No."
"Didn't think so. People from here don't walk like they own the sky."
Ethan gave a rare smile and walked off.
Later that day, the group gathered near the edge of the island.
"We need to know more about Enel before we do anything," Robin said. "I found some old records from a Sky Priest—there are stories of him coming from Birka."
Vivi tilted her head. "Birka?"
"Another sky island. Destroyed. No survivors, except him."
"So he wiped out his own people?" Kaya asked, frowning.
"Maybe," Robin replied. "Or maybe they tried to stop him."
Ethan said nothing. He was looking up, toward the clouds above the Upper Yard. Toward the Ark Maxim.
"I want to know how he hears everything," he said suddenly.
Robin nodded. "Mantra. It's what the Skypieans call it, but it's similar to Observation Haki. He can sense presence, intent, even voices across the island."
"So he knows what we're doing?" Kaya asked.
"Probably," Robin replied.
"Then let's give him something to listen to," Ethan said.
They spent the evening exploring more of Angel Island, trying not to draw attention. Vivi struck up quiet conversations with the townspeople. Robin returned to the temple ruins to study old carvings. Kaya wandered through the market, drawn to the unfamiliar foods and crafts.
Ethan stayed near the clouds' edge, watching the sun set over the sea of white. His thoughts wandered. He hadn't had a proper fight in weeks. Kuro had been fast. Crocodile had been clever. But neither had challenged him. Not really.
He wondered if this lightning god would be different.
That night, back at the inn, a thunderclap rattled the windows.
Everyone looked up.
A bolt of lightning danced in the distance, splitting the sky with terrifying grace.
Vivi flinched. "That's him, isn't it?"
Robin nodded. "He sensing us."
Ethan closed his eyes for a moment. He could feel something. A presence. Not like Haki—it was different. Colder. Heavy.
He opened his eyes again.
"You can watch all you want," he said to the night sky, "but if you think that makes you a god."
