Chapter 2 - chapter one: In The Margins

"Where are you going, Perry?" Alicia asked, her voice laced with concern.

"To my girlfriend's house," I replied curtly, not bothering to hide my annoyance. "Got a problem with that?"

She sighed, and I could tell we'd been down this road before. "Perry, I'm your mother..."

"And I know that, don't I?" I cut her off, slamming the door behind me.

That was just another typical skirmish in our ongoing war of attrition. To be honest, I didn't really have a good reason for disliking her – or the rest of my family, for that matter. They treated me like an outsider, and it was starting to feel like a self-fulfilling prophecy.

I arrived at Ashley's place, and she greeted me with a warm smile. "Hey, Bambi," she said playfully, and I couldn't help but crack a smile.

"So, why'd you come over?" she asked, snuggling up close. "Wanna make out or something?"

I shook my head. "Nah, don't feel like it. Just needed someone to talk to."

Ashley leaned into me, and I wrapped my arm around her shoulders. As we sat there, my gaze drifted to the TV, and I started wondering what the appeal was. People seemed to love watching moving pictures, but to me, it was just... strange. Like watching zombies dance in a graveyard at midnight..
