Chapter 3 - Charlotte

"I was always a loser as a kid, I was trash at basically everything. I was bad at sports, I couldn't clean or cook, my grades were atrocious. And because of this, my parents always spanked me, they told me I was a failure and would end up living as a prostitute if I didn't change." Charlotte passed her hand through her bright-golden hair as she sighed.

"Knowing that becoming a prostitute was basically the lowest level a woman could go, I constantly tried to improve at school, sports, and other activities, but it was to no avail." Charlotte smiled weakly, "Soon I realized that I can't improve everything at the same time, so I decided to quit everything except for school, that was a mistake."

Charlotte's fists clenched as she hardened her face.

"Every grading period was a hellhole of torture for me. Every time I walked home with my report card, I earnestly prepared myself mentally for my terrible fate to come. Time after time, the scores didn't improve, the insults didn't stop, and my parents started to worry. They didn't want me to have a terrible future. So they punished me even more in hopes that it would somehow change me, they even hired me an expensive tutor. Even then my grades didn't improve. Soon came senior year, I was the only one of my classmates who didn't graduate. Frustrated, my parents threw me out, they said that they didn't want a failure as a daughter. And that's when I rented this apartment with you."

As Charlotte looked out of the window towards the sun, a remorseful look crawled up on her face, "Sigh, but in the end, our pasts don't matter. What does matter is the fact that right now, we're about to get evicted. Larry I don't care about your past, or whatever philosophy you created for yourself, right now, we need to find a way to pay off the rent."

Charlotte's hair flew in the air as she spun towards Larry who was still slumped on the sofa like a shrimp.

"Hmm, maybe you're right. I'll help you get the money, but I'll stick to my philosophy, do it in the way that takes the least amount of work."

Charlotte, relieved, let out a deep breath of air, "For a moment, I thought that your lazy ass would decide to just stay at home and rest."

"Hey, I'm lazy but that doesn't mean that I'll just sit and wait for my doom. My whole philosophy is to rest, and be lazy. Then, when problems arise, solve them in the way that takes the least amount of work."

"Well it's a relief that you aren't totally useless." Charlotte mused as she headed towards the fridge to finish that now 3 day old pasta before it grew mold. Charlotte's kitchen wasn't very impressive, all it had was a fridge, stove, cupboard, sink, and microwave. Funny enough, the kitchen was still by far the most expensive part of the apartment. The microwave hummed as it heated the pasta, when Larry called out.

"Don't eat all the pasta, save some for me."

"Yeah, I'm not a greedy pig unlike you." retorted Charlotte. Ding-- Charlotte took the bowl of pasta out of the microwave and walked towards the sofa that Larry was perched on with two pairs of chopsticks and sat next to him.

With the bowl of pasta sitting between Larry and Charlotte, Larry called out, "Well, let's dig into our last share of pasta."

___

As Larry took the last bite of pasta in the bowl he thought, "Now that this pasta is finished, the only food we have left is that box of Ramen noodles." Larry looked at Charlotte only to find that she was already staring back at him. The look in her eyes clearly showed the same concern as himself.

"Welp, these next few days are going to be terrible." Larry lamented.

"Yeah, that box will only last us around three days, the good news is that we won't have to eat that stuff any more than three days, the bad news is that after those three days, we'll be out of food." noted Charlotte as both she and Larry slumped deeper into the sofa.

Larry nodded his head and opened his mouth, "What will we eat after those three days?"

Charlotte opened her mouth to answer when suddenly, Ding-dong-- the doorbell rang.
