Petra awaited the emperor’s arrival in his study, a place she had frequented innumerable times since becoming the lady of the palace.
She had won against the numerous imperial mistresses and Princess Apollonia, meticulously arranging the furniture and decor according to her preferences. Over the span of a decade, her oversight of the palace’s housekeeping had granted her mastery over the entire domain, with the sole exception being the detached palace where Apollonia resided. That exception held little significance though; she thought it didn’t even matter whether the detached palace was there or not, much like Princess Apollonia herself.
However, on this particular day, the study felt different from usual. Despite the familiar appearance, an entirely new and unfamiliar ambiance filled the air.
‘What exactly…?’
Petra narrowed her eyes, sweeping her gaze around the room, finally pausing at a certain oil painting on the wall.
