Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: Conquer the Younger Brother

The Poliwag heard Sam's words, happily twirling around in place, and then affectionately rubbed against the Weedle.

"Why are you here? Where are your mom and dad? Be careful not to get caught and eaten by other Pokémon!"

Sam saw such a tiny young Pokémon wandering around aimlessly in such a large forest and felt a little worried. Of course, this was because the Poliwag had just served as a cushion for him. Otherwise, he wouldn't care about the Poliwag's life or death; he was barely surviving himself.

The Poliwag explained to Sam.

"Oh, your mom and dad brought you to find food. You're a lucky kid. Hurry back. I need to keep hiding. Don't run around alone so much in the future."

Sam knew the Poliwag's parents were nearby, so he stopped worrying.

"No."

"Huh?"

"No reason."

Sam refused the Poliwag's invitation. How could he, a Weedle, mix with the Poliwag family? The Poliwag's parents were most likely Poliwhirl. The probability of them being Politoed or Poliwrath is low because the latter requires a King's Rock for a Link Trade, and the former requires a Water Stone. Achieving these conditions in the wild is not easy. But no matter which one, these are frogs. According to the animal food chain in nature, these frogs eat insects.

Although Sam had never seen Pokémon eat Pokémon in the anime, how could he know the actual situation?

The Poliwag nodded and ran off. But after a while, it came running back, holding a large pile of berries with its tail, and placed them in front of the bush where Sam was hiding.

A powerful call came from a distance. As soon as the Poliwag heard the sound, it quickly ran back. It seemed its parents were calling it.

After the Poliwag left, Sam peeked out, glanced in the direction the Poliwag had gone, and then looked at the pile of berries forming a 'small mountain' in front of him. He felt a little touched. This baby Poliwag is quite kind.

Sam came out of the bush and lowered his head, frantically eating the various berries. Sweet and sour ones. Sweet and spicy ones. Sour and astringent ones. Sweet, sour, bitter, spicy, and astringent ones. Anyway, he loved every kind. His main strategy was to accept anything and eat wildly.

Just as he was almost finished eating, a scarred Weedle crawled out of the nearby bush. It looked like it had been attacked by other Pokémon. This Weedle was quite large, more than 1.5 times Sam's size.

"Help me..." the Weedle said weakly.

That Weedle saw Sam, a light appeared in its eyes, and it sent out a cry for help towards him. At this moment, it was lying on the ground with no strength to crawl. If Sam stood by, this Weedle would die here.

...

Sam reluctantly looked at the remaining berries, gritted his teeth, and carried a few in his mouth to the Weedle. He remembered that these few berries could restore stamina. That Weedle gave Sam a grateful look and weakly lifted its head to eat the berries.

Sam was worried that this guy would steal his other berries after recovering, so he continued to eat the remaining berries until he was full. There was no other way; he had to be careful. After all, this guy looked stronger than him.

However, Sam was truly mistaken about one thing. That is, Pokémon are not as evil as humans. How could they repay kindness with enmity towards their benefactor?

Seeing that Weedle find a bush to curl up and sleep after eating, Sam also found a safer place to hide and sleep.

When he woke up, his face showed surprise. Because that Weedle was actually lying next to him. This gave Sam a big fright. But seeing that the other party wasn't hostile, he breathed a sigh of relief. After observing for a while longer, he realized that this Weedle might have been protecting him while he was sleeping.

"I slept too soundly; I didn't even notice this guy approaching."

"What's your name?"

Sam asked this Weedle. He thought these wild Pokémon probably didn't have names, but he asked anyway. After all, it was his first time being a Pokémon, who knew if Pokémon had their own names and designations?

"No name."

"Why don't you stick with me from now on?"

Sam wasn't surprised by the other party's answer; instead, he extended an invitation.

The Weedle nodded, showing a happy expression, and then moved its horn on its head towards Sam. It had always acted alone before and felt a bit lonely. Now that it had a companion, it was also very happy.

"Then we need to have designations. You can call me Sam, and you'll be called Little Yellow."

Sam looked at the Weedle in front of him, roughly understood its meaning, and also moved his horn forward. He noticed that its body color was lighter than that of typical Weedle, so he gave it this name.

As for why they moved their horns to touch each other's horns, this is how Weedle express friendliness.

"Okay."

"Can you climb trees?" Sam asked it. He thought with its build, it should be able to climb trees by now. Sure enough, Little Yellow nodded and looked at Sam with a puzzled expression. It remembered it could climb trees since birth. Could Sam not?

"Let's go, we'll finish those berries, then go up the tree. You carry me; I don't have enough strength."

"Okay."

Little Yellow nodded. Next, Sam led Little Yellow to clean up the unfinished berries that the Poliwag had brought. After that, they continued to challenge that tree.

But this time was different. Sam climbed in front, and Little Yellow pushed his butt from behind, saving him a lot of effort. Finally, Sam reached the top of the tree trunk and witnessed the glory on the tree.

You really don't know until you get on a tree; there are Bug-type Pokémon on almost any tree in this forest. For example, there was a fat Caterpie on the adjacent tree. And on their tree, there was another Weedle about the same size as Little Yellow.

"Sam, should we fight it?" Little Yellow asked after getting onto the tree trunk. The other party was also staring at them vigilantly.

Sam thought for a moment, looked at Little Yellow beside him, and then looked at that Weedle. Then he carefully observed the situation on the large trees around them. He roughly understood what was going on.

Territorial awareness. One insect occupies a tree, treating the tree and the berries on it as its own property. What Little Yellow meant by saying this was asking Sam if they should seize the other party's territory.

"No rush, let's observe first."

Sam pondered for a moment and shook his head. These small Pokémon like Caterpie and Weedle don't have very high intelligence yet. They lack the concept and awareness of teamwork and only want to enjoy everything by themselves. Only when they evolve into Butterfree and Beedrill do they gain the concept of a colony. However, Sam didn't have to wait until the Beedrill stage to form his own force. He could completely form a small Weedle team now.

Thinking this, Sam crawled towards the unfamiliar Weedle.

"Hello."

"Leave!"

Sam was stunned for a moment when he heard the other party's voice. Because the voice sounded like a female voice in his ears, this Weedle in front of him was a female.

"We can cooperate and occupy all the large trees in this area."

"Leave!"

...Little Yellow, hit her.

Sam felt that the other party was too nervous and couldn't communicate properly with him. So Sam decided to team up with Little Yellow to teach this Weedle a lesson and make her calm down.

Ptooey! Sam tried to spit, and a long, thin thread of silk shot out, trapping that Weedle. The other party immediately used the String Shot move and shot it towards Sam. But Sam simply retreated a bit and dodged it. On the other side, Little Yellow had already rushed up and bit the other party on the head.

"Bug Bite move, Little Yellow's level isn't low. Why hasn't it evolved yet?" Sam was a little surprised to see Little Yellow use this move. Weedle can only learn a total of three moves. The naturally learned Poison Sting and String Shot, and the later-learned Bug Bite. Bug Bite can only be learned around Lv. 9. Generally speaking, Weedle are within the range to evolve once they reach this level.

The Weedle on the other side was clearly not as high level as Little Yellow, and being fought two-on-one, she was quickly defeated. Finally, she lay on the branch in despair, quietly waiting for the two of her kind to come and kick her off the tree or eat her.

"Can you listen to me properly now?"

Sam had no intention of eating her; he just approached her to talk.

"What do you want to say?"

"Join our team, and in the future... there will be lots and lots of berries! And you won't be bullied by other members of your kind!"

Sam thought for a moment and decided to use a simpler explanation.

"Really?"

The Weedle's eyes lit up, and it seemed to be almost drooling.

"Really."

Sam nodded. At this, the Weedle immediately stopped resisting and nodded, indicating her willingness to join Sam's small team.

"Then let's reintroduce ourselves. My name is Sam, this is Little Yellow. You need a name too. I'll give you one."

"Okay!"

"You'll be called... Little Beauty."

Sam stared at this female Weedle for a moment and found that her two small eyes and the small horn on her head were quite delicate. Although he couldn't particularly appreciate the beauty of Weedle, he thought this female Weedle was probably quite pretty among the Weedle population. So he gave her the name 'Little Beauty.'

"Okay~"

Little Beauty nodded, then came forward and pressed her horn close to the two of them. Sam and Little Yellow both lowered their heads and touched horns with her. The three of them were now a small group, companions.

"We'll stay on this tree for the next few days. Eat as much as you can, finish all the Leppa Berries on this tree! Don't waste your appetite on leaves, eat more berries! Once they're gone, we'll go seize other insects' territory."

"Okay!" x2

Under Sam's leadership, the three insects frantically ate the Leppa Berries on this tree. The number of Leppa Berries on this tree was very large. For three small insects of their size to finish eating them, it would take at least about ten days.

And changes happened quickly. That night, waves of white light emanated from Little Yellow's body. Little Beauty was startled and hid behind the smaller Sam, while after the white light on Little Yellow dissipated, it turned into a pupa.

Kakuna.

Kakuna is a pale yellow pupa-shaped Pokémon. Kakuna has a rounded head and black triangular eyes, and it has sickle-shaped arms in the middle of its body. Although in the game, Kakuna only has the defensive move 'Harden' and seems to have no offensive power. But in reality, this is not the case. Although it is a pupa, it can still move its body slightly, and if an enemy attacks, it will extend its Poison Sting to attack.

"Little Yellow?"

Little Beauty looked at the large yellow mass in front of her with some uncertainty.

"Yes, that's Little Yellow."

Compared to Little Beauty, Sam felt more shock in his heart. Because a typical Kakuna is only 0.6m tall, but Little Yellow was already 0.5m tall when it was a Weedle. And after evolving, Little Yellow was a full meter tall!

This isn't a Kakuna; this is clearly a giant cone!

'What kind of forest is this?'

Sam turned his head blankly to look at this vast forest. He found that all the Pokémon in this forest had builds that exceeded his understanding.
