The room was silent, tension thick in the air.
A young man with spiked orange hair stood there, his expression sharp yet tinged with disbelief.
"A blatant thief? You're really not taking me seriously?"
Abarai Renji ignored the human before him. In his Shinigami state, mortals couldn't see him—at least, that's what he thought.
This time, he was wrong.
A sudden gust slammed into him from behind. Renji reacted instinctively, arms coming up in defense.
Boom.
The impact hurled the orange-haired youth against the wall with bone-rattling force.
"That's… some serious power…" The boy drew in a hiss of breath, wincing as he pushed himself free of the plaster.
Renji's brows knitted. "Wait… you can see me?"
The youth didn't reply. His gaze burned like an open flame. Without warning, he lunged forward, charging straight at Renji.
Clearly, someone—maybe Isshin or that girl—had shaped this reckless personality. A real problem child.
Kurosaki Ichigo had fought since he could walk, but he had never faced an opponent like this. One punch had been enough to send him flying earlier, and instead of discouraging him, it only sharpened his excitement.
"Try my angry kick!"
He leapt high, leg snapping forward in a flying strike.
Boom.
The result was the same—he went down hard. But instead of retreating, Ichigo's fighting spirit only grew, fierce and relentless.
Renji was intrigued. A human who could not only see a Shinigami but withstand his spiritual pressure and keep fighting was unheard of. Humans were fragile; a mere fraction of unleashed reiatsu could crush their souls. Yet this boy ignored it entirely, attacking with unwavering vigor.
The two clashed again and again—defeat followed by challenge, challenge followed by defeat.
Outside, on the rooftop of a tall building under the moonlight, Moyu and Urahara Kisuke watched in silence.
"Well, well," Kisuke murmured, stroking his chin. "This turned out differently than expected."
"Relax," Moyu said evenly. "Minor deviations don't change the plan's core. But… Renji's power seems to be growing fast."
Kisuke's fan flicked open with a snap. "As you said, his potential is high. He's close to the threshold of Bankai. Combine that with the transformation body, and he'll break through for sure."
A sudden crash shook the building.
From within the wall, a hidden Menos Grande extended a massive arm, striking with speed and strength far beyond what Renji knew of such Hollows.
"Impossible—!"
The blow sent Renji hurtling through the wall in an explosion of dust and debris, his body skidding more than ten meters before stopping.
"This power… it's like a beast."
He vanished in a blur of shunpo, reappearing above the Hollow.
"Roar, Zabimaru!"
The segmented blade whipped down in a savage arc. Stone split, walls buckled, but Menos Grande dissolved back into the space around them, vanishing from sight.
Renji tightened his grip, scanning with controlled bursts of reiatsu to locate it.
"Behind you!" Ichigo's voice rang out.
Renji spun and blocked just in time, steel clashing against the monster's blow.
"You're lucky, little Shinigami," the Adjuchas-class Menos hissed through its mask. "Your soul will be delicious."
The Hollow struck and vanished at will, forcing Renji into brutal exchanges—trading wounds for openings. Three ribs cracked, his left arm shattered, his right leg fractured. His body began to fail him.
"Ha ha ha! My uncle wins!" The mantis-like Hollow lumbered closer, raising its arm for the killing blow.
Am I going to die here? Renji's teeth ground together, eyes blazing with defiance.
Then, a figure dropped from above, boot slamming into the Hollow's mask and driving it to the ground.
Renji blinked. A human… dropped a Menos Grande?
Had the world changed, or had he fallen behind? Humans weren't supposed to be this strong. And yet—this one's soul radiated dense spiritual particles, far beyond any ordinary mortal.
Perhaps the Hollow's real target wasn't him after all.
"Maybe… there's one last card to play," Renji thought. "Hey, human brat!"
Ichigo turned, blinking. "Me?"
Renji hefted Zabimaru in his ruined arm. "Do you want to get stronger?"
Ichigo's eyes narrowed, hungry for the answer. "You have a way?"
Renji's lips curved in a predatory smile. "Come closer."
Glancing at the Hollow stirring behind him, Ichigo moved without hesitation. He knew his earlier blow had been a lucky ambush; in a straight fight, he stood no chance.
But when he reached Renji, the Shinigami drove his blade straight through Ichigo's chest.
On the rooftop, Moyu's expression froze. "What… is this? Since when did that simple-hearted kid turn into such a schemer?"
Kisuke's fan snapped open again, hiding a sly smile. "Not my teaching. Must've been self-study."
A burst of radiant reiatsu flared below, turning night into day.
"What a color," Kisuke said, eyes gleaming. "Mixed blood… the greatest latent force."
Moyu glanced sideways. "So? Tempted to test Hollow power yourself?"
"I'll pass," Kisuke chuckled. "I'm strictly support."
Below, Ichigo's new Zanpakutō—broad and heavy as a steel door—cleaved the Hollow's mask in two. Menos Grande dissolved into drifting particles.
Renji collapsed first, consciousness slipping away. Ichigo, drained by the strain of his awakened power, followed.
Kisuke landed lightly beside them, cane in hand. "Soul stability confirmed. Ready for foreign body implantation. Take Renji back."
Under the streetlight outside Karakura Hospital, Shiba Isshin emerged from the shadows, scratching his short black hair. "Those injuries… recovery's going to take time."
"Focus on your son," Moyu said quietly. "His potential surpasses even yours."
Isshin folded his arms with a grin. "Compared to you, potential is just a leaf meant to highlight the flower, Mr. Moyu."
