Chapter 78 - Chapter 78: Human Eros and Divine Eros [100 P.S Chapter]

Just landed ashore today and already captured a little devilish girl succubus.

At this moment, Eros would like to express his heartfelt gratitude for the gift from Lord Hades—whom he hadn't even met yet but was apparently either a silver-haired mature woman or a black-stockinged goth girl.

What a beautiful Underworld! Go to hell and you get a little devilish girl succubus? What are you all waiting for?

"Let go of me right now!"

The girl struggling furiously was Hypnos, whom Eros had lifted with his stick.

He hadn't really beaten her up, after all, she was a rare and valuable little devilish girl succubus.

He had just ever-so-gently educated her on the proper virtues that a child ought to have.

For instance, walking around barefoot was unhygienic. So Eros kindly helped her put on a pair of over-the-knee socks.

One chocolate-flavored, one cream-flavored. The mix was far more fragrant.

"You pervert! You freak! If you don't let me go, I'm going to scream!"

Hypnos's face was bright red, whether from being tied up or being forced into the socks was unclear.

"Do you even know who I am? Let me down, or I'll have my mom come beat you up!"

"Oh, go ahead and scream. I don't mind."

Eros remained completely calm.

The Lady of the Night, Nyx, was indeed a great and revered deity.

Her status was so lofty that even Zeus showed her utmost respect. She was the incarnation of the night itself.

Though she bore epithets like "Lady of Pain," "Goddess of Death," and "Goddess of Betrayal,"

She was in fact a rather kind and benevolent goddess, with no recorded misdeeds.

Compared to the mother goddess Gaia next door, who raised a son for a day and exploited him for a thousand, Nyx could truly be called a goddess worthy of the name "Mother."

Eros hadn't done anything inappropriate to Hypnos—she was the one who tried to throw her status around first.

All he did was push back a little, teach her a lesson. Nothing more.

This kind of childish squabble, surely Nyx wouldn't descend in person for it?

Then Eros saw her. Standing by the road, wrapped entirely in a veil of black starry silk.

The signs were unmistakable. No need for explanations. Eros's hand trembled, and Hypnos tumbled straight to the ground.

No way, she really showed up?

He may have talked big earlier, but now Eros was definitely nervous.

Legends were, after all, just legends. No one could say for sure what was true or false.

If even Zeus could turn into a silver-haired bishoujo, then who knew what Nyx's real temperament was like?

Still, with the divine marks on his body, surely she would give him some face, right?

With that in mind, Eros composed himself and put on a respectful, humble expression.

"Most revered and compassionate Goddess Nyx, please forgive my earlier offense. I acted out of necessity."

He hadn't touched her inappropriately or ogled her. He had simply, very properly, helped Hypnos put on socks. His conscience was clear.

"Mother! You've come to save me!"

Still tied to the stick, Hypnos wriggled on the ground like a caterpillar.

"You just wait! I'll return this humiliation to you in full!"

Now that she had backup, the little devil had a whole new level of bravado.

She looked every bit like a fox borrowing the power of a tiger—it almost made one want to laugh.

Nyx, her face veiled entirely in black starlight, didn't say a word. She simply patted Hypnos's head with maternal tenderness.

Then, as the goddess who presided over [Sleep], she gently closed her eyes and drifted off into slumber.

"You really don't have to be so nervous."

After placing Hypnos into peaceful sleep, the goddess of night finally raised her head and looked straight at Eros.

"I didn't come because of what happened between you and that child. I came specifically to see you, Eros."

Through that starry veil of night, Eros saw the gaze beneath—gentle, but tinged with a complex emotion.

She held no malice.

That much, Eros could clearly sense.

"This is… rather humbling for me."

While lowering his posture, Eros's mind raced.

Where in the world had he come into contact with this supreme goddess? Why had she come just to meet him?

Could it be that his fame and charm had grown so dazzling that even Nyx couldn't contain her curiosity?

Rather than guessing endlessly, it was better to ask directly. Eros looked Nyx in the eye and asked straightforwardly,

"Then may I ask, honored goddess, what brings you here today? Or is there something you would like from me?"

Nyx glanced down at the still-snoozing Hypnos. At some point, night had quietly enveloped the area.

Already dim by the banks of the River Styx, the world now sank deeper into the silence of night.

W-what now?

Eros had just escaped from Tartarus—where there was no light, no sound—and now Nyx had pulled him into this dark chamber again.

The déjà vu was strong. Was she planning to do something unspeakable as well?

"There are some things I want to say. But I'd rather they not be heard by others."

Nyx brought a finger to her lips in a shushing motion. Though she didn't speak aloud, her gentle, warm voice resonated directly in Eros's mind.

"Before I tell you why I've come, I'd like to ask you a question."

"Do you consider yourself to be human Eros, or the original god Eros, the one who governs love and desire?"

One sentence—and it was as if she saw straight through to the core of him. Eros felt a cold breeze blow beneath his clothes.

Along his journey, several goddesses had wondered about the source of his strange cosmic powers and magnetic field.

But the world had too many oddities, and Eros had the reputation of a 'prophet.' Most had chosen not to dig deeper.

Yet from the very first word, Nyx had gone straight to the most critical truth of all.

That fragment of the original god of love and desire, drawn to Eros by his intense emotional fluctuations.

That was the true source of his power. Power born from emotion itself.

No god had ever mentioned it or seemed to detect it, so Eros had assumed it lacked any true divinity.

But Nyx's words forced him to rethink how he should respond.

By all logic, he was purely human. But wasn't there another possibility?

Perhaps… he really was the true Eros reborn, for reasons unknown, into a human vessel.

"So you don't have an answer yet either."

Whether disappointed or relieved, Nyx did not press the matter further.

"Goddess Nyx, do you know the answer to that question?"

Rather than give his own answer, Eros found himself increasingly filled with questions.

He even wanted to ask Nyx what else she knew.

"Not all questions have answers, Eros."

Nyx shook her head slowly.

"This world is not fixed in stone. The identity of a human or a god… neither is unchanging."

"Just as you wonder, who am I, really?"

"Am I Nyx, the goddess of night and daughter of Chaos? Or am I Ananke, the goddess of inevitability and creation?"
