Chapter 140 - Dark voyage chapter 140

SAI SHINU

The Shadow Man's blade cut through the air, its darkness shrieking like a thousand voices. Jiro parried, his muscles straining under the weight of each strike. Sparks flew, but no matter how strong his defense was, the enemy pressed harder.

"Damn it—!" Jiro staggered as his boots skidded against the cracked stone.

I raised my hand, blasting light against the Shadow Man's flank. It burned against the darkness for a fleeting second, but he simply turned his head, sneering.

"Annoying," he hissed. With a flick of his wrist, tendrils of shadow lashed out, whipping toward me.

I barely dodged, the tendrils tearing through the ground where I'd stood.

Namae roared, slamming her palms into the floor. The stone cracked, and pillars of fire erupted beneath the Shadow Man, forcing him back. The heat seared his cloak, but instead of pain, he laughed—deep and hollow.

"Good," he said, shadows extinguishing the flames in a breath. "Show me more."

We pushed together—Jiro's blade flashing, Namae's flames roaring, and my bursts of light shielding openings. For a moment, it felt like we had rhythm. For a moment, it felt like we could win.

But then—

The Shadow Man dissolved into mist. My breath froze.

"Where—"

A voice whispered in my ear, cold as death. "Behind you."

Pain. Fire ripped through my side as a blade of shadow pierced me. I gasped, clutching the wound.

"Sai!" Namae screamed, unleashing a storm of wind and flame to push him back.

I staggered, healing light spilling over my hands. My vision blurred, but I forced myself upright. Not yet. I can't fall yet.

Jiro was already charging, fury etched in his face. He clashed again with the Shadow Man, sparks raining like falling stars. "You bastard! Face me!"

They exchanged blow after blow, shadows and steel colliding until it became impossible to track their strikes. Jiro pushed him back once, twice—but the Shadow Man adapted. Every clash, he grew faster. Stronger.

And then it happened.

Jiro swung wide, aiming for the neck. The Shadow Man let it pass through mist, then solidified behind him. A blade of shadow pierced clean through Jiro's chest.

Time stopped.

Jiro's blade slipped from his fingers, clattering uselessly on the stone. His eyes widened, lips parting as blood poured.

"Jiro!" My voice tore from me, raw, desperate.

The Shadow Man smirked, twisting the blade deeper before pulling it free. Jiro collapsed to his knees, coughing blood, and fell face-first onto the cold floor.

"No…" Namae's voice cracked, tears already spilling as she ran to him. She turned him over, hands trembling. "No, stay with me! Please—"

But his eyes… they were already fading.

Rage ignited in my chest. My vision blurred red, my breathing ragged. The Shadow Man stood above us, smiling as though this was nothing more than entertainment.

"You see now," he whispered. "Despair is beautiful."

Something inside me broke.

JIRO IKIGAI

The cold bit through my chest, sharp and unforgiving. I tried to lift my arms, to strike, to do something—anything—but the darkness pressed harder than ever. Pain seared, burning like molten iron as the Shadow Man's blade pierced me.

I saw Sai through the haze. His eyes were blazing—not with anger, not with fear—but with everything. Love, rage, grief… determination. And Namae… she was running toward me, her voice trembling, calling my name.

I wanted to reach out to them, to tell them it would be okay, but my body refused. My limbs were lead, and each breath was fire.

The battlefield around us blurred. Shadows swirled, forming monsters, weapons, and illusions—but none of it mattered. What mattered were them. The people I had fought beside, bled with, and trusted with my life.

I felt warmth where Namae's hands touched me. Her tears splashed onto my skin, but they were not just sorrow—they were love. And Sai… I could feel him charging, pushing against the impossible.

I thought of everything we had done together: the gates we had crossed, the battles we had fought, the laughter we had shared. I thought of the child, of Yuri, of Taro, of everyone depending on us.

A strange calm washed over me. Pain still burned, but it was distant now. My mind cleared, and I knew—my purpose was not over. Even if my body failed, the fight would continue through them.

I whispered, barely audible over the chaos:

"Protect… them… Sai… Namae… don't… let this end… here…"

A flicker of light passed through my vision, green and brilliant. I felt Sai's surge of power, the energy tearing through the shadows, and I knew… he would win.

I closed my eyes, letting the darkness take me. No fear. No regrets. Just trust. Trust that they would carry on, trust that the world we fought for would not collapse, trust that our sacrifices meant something.

And with that, my heart stilled, my breath faded, and I surrendered to the shadows.

Even in death, I was not afraid.
