Chapter 2 - Light and shadows

Sunny for once in his life was on the

winning side.

The gateway shuddering from the violent thunders of the pillars from the crimson spire breaking down was just a few steps away... and yet sunny stood still.

He had just bested Nephis at combat and was behind him slowly healing from her wounds, her radiant flames licking her wounds almost desperately healing her from her battered state.

And yet turning back Sunny could see the sea of emotions in Nephis eyes as she stared at him.

Anguish, exhaustion, pain, and for a moment relief all stirred inside her eyes.

"Well what are you waiting for, go, Sunny, you've won" Nephis spat out a small unnoticeable smile formed from her knowing Sunny would be safe even if it came at the cost of her staying in this hell.

Nephis could tolerate and even accept the pain to come from this decision but she knew as the scion of the immortal flame clan and the famous changing star, she would survive.

But she knew that if Sunny stayed, there would be no chance that Sunny would survive the whole ordeal.

Whether it was from mental exhaustion or a fatal stab from a sneaky creature, she knew that there was little chance, no, no chance of him surviving.

So she decided to design this whole ordeal to make sure he would leave her while thinking he won and left with his efforts, it was not easy if she messed up even once she would accidentally kill him but in the end, it paid off.

Or at least she thought so.

"You thought you had me there, congrats on almost fooling me, your efforts were glorious, to say the least"

Nephis, who had thought her plan had worked was shaken from the realization that he had seen through her facade. It isn't all that shocking to her as she had planned for this ahead of time too, after all, it was he who taught her how to lie to people convincingly.

"I have no idea what you're talking about," nephis said as Sunny pointed an accusing finger at her, "Lier, you purposely through the fight, why? And don't give time that bullshit excuse that you didn't. I was the one who taught you how to lie after all."

Nephis grimaced before saying, "Fine you caught me I threw the fight on purpose. I could've killed you at any time if I had wanted to, now go, please sunny just go"

Sunny stared at her before looking back at the gateway, the alluring whiteish-blue light telling him to come to safety, and Sunny wanted to go too.

After all, he had spent more than a year here and experienced enough pain for a lifetime, and now here was the exit to all of that, he had done it even if Nephis had thrown the fight.

Everything was telling him to go, to leave the white-haired girl and the city all behind like a bad dream, to make it someone else's problem for once, not to have to fight for his life every single day and have to struggle.

To be free.

To be happy knowing he's done enough.

Sunny took a step towards the divine pedestal.

He took another,

And another,

And another.

Till he was at the edge of it, staring at the pad, just one more step, just one more to escape this crimson hell.

As he was ready to take that step he stopped and turned his head back to look at Nephis who was starting to stand up haggardly, sunny had a revelation.

He couldn't leave her.

Not that something physical was stopping him from leaving, but emotionally he couldn't, he couldn't leave her, he wouldn't leave her, not like this, not ever.

Not his comrade,

Not his companion,

Not his friend,

Not his...his beloved.

Just as Sunny had thought this his eyes widened from the shock of realizing, he had feelings for her, he didn't know when they had started or appeared but they were there, obvious to it as he never knew what it meant to love or be loved.

Nephis smiled at him before saying "I'll see you soon sunny, take care and I-I hope you find your sister and both of you are safe."

"I hope she's safe too," Sunny said as he raised [midnight Shard] over the white, crystal pad.

As soon as Nephis realized what he was going to do she screamed, "LOST FROM LIGHT STO-" but before she finished Sunny had thrust his sword deep into the white pad instantly cracking it as thousands of cracks appeared before then shattering into millions of pieces as the soft warm light dissolved.

Sunny then felt something dormant, something empty be filled, it felt like something he had missed his entire life being in his possession, making him feel complete, whole, chained.

Sunny then turned to Nephis with cold, shock, and murder deep in his dark eyes as she said those 4 words forever changing his life.

Just as he was about to say something to her a boulder came from the sky and landed in between them, "we'll talk later" Sunny said as he ran over to her picked her up slumped her onto his shoulders, and summoned [dark wing] as they rapidly descended the tower before then landing on the ground with a thud.

Sunny let go of Nephis as they soon ran towards the exit just as the tower collapsed behind them barely making it out alive, as the dying "sun" gave out its final volley of light it died out.

Both Sunny and Nephis immediately collapsed to the ground exhausted after their escape, before Sunny passed out he wondered how she knew his true name as he then fell into the warm embrace of sleep.
