We made our way down the corridor to a door. This was her bedchamber. I looked to both sides, the wind howling through, and this place looked more graveyard than a graveyard did.
I cleared my throat and knocked, the mere sound echoing through the air. It took minutes before the door was answered and the princess's handmaid stepped forward.
"Can I help you?"
"Is that the way to act toward the monarch's wife?" Lucan said, leaning against the wall, his face down to hers.
The handmaid got intimidated. "Sir Lucan," she greeted before looking over to me and bowing. "Is there anything I can do for you?"
"I want to see the princess."
"What?" she gasped. "Um…Why?"
"I believe the fault lies with me," I began in a solemn tone. "Ever since I arrived in the empire, I have neglected my duty to see her."
"I assure you, my lady, the princess takes no offense; she understands."
"Odd, I thought I might have offended her."
"Definitely not—"
