When the old man learned that Xiao Yan had chosen to resurrect him first, even before his own teacher, he was visibly stunned—and quietly moved. He hadn't expected this young man to prioritize him. Clearly, in Xiao Yan's eyes, his value wasn't insignificant.
What Tianhuo Zunzhe didn't know, however, was that Xiao Yan chose to begin with him purely to "practice." After all, refining a body for another person—even for Xiao Yan—was a first. If something went wrong and Tianhuo Zunzhe's soul was destroyed, the loss wouldn't be too devastating.
Still, Xiao Yan didn't cut corners on materials. The essence blood he used came from a rank-seven Venomous Scorpion Dragon Beast that he had obtained in the Scorpion Emperor's tomb. The body was none other than that of the Earth Demon Old Ghost, whom he had recently slain. As for the Bone Fusion Pill, it was a peak seventh-grade pill he had concocted during his previous alchemy sessions—the lowest quality one among the batch.
Even so, if sold at auction, that single pill would fetch an astronomical price—even in Central Plains, it would be near priceless.
Seeing the high-quality materials Xiao Yan had prepared for him, Tianhuo Zunzhe was deeply satisfied. "Three-star Dou Zun…" Xiao Yan narrowed his eyes slightly as he sensed the aura. Typically, someone revived in this manner wouldn't fully recover their peak power. But the higher the quality of the materials used, the stronger the result. Tianhuo Zunzhe had been a five-star Dou Zun before his death. Reaching three stars now was already impressive.
Of course, Xiao Yan had his ways to help the old man regain his peak—he just wasn't going to reveal that yet. He needed leverage to keep Tianhuo Zunzhe obedient. Just like he'd once strung along Hai Bodong, he needed contingencies. If this old man ever showed signs of betrayal, Xiao Yan wouldn't hesitate to destroy him completely.
"Congratulations on your return, Elder Yao," Xiao Yan said with a pleasant smile, though inwardly he remained on guard. Naturally, he had hidden contingencies in every material he provided—just in case this old fox turned hostile.
Fortunately, the situation unfolded as hoped. After sensing the strength of his new body, Tianhuo Zunzhe gave Xiao Yan a respectful cupped-fist salute. His tone was solemn.
"Xiao Yan, my young friend—words cannot express my gratitude. Since you've given me new life, I will honor my promise and follow your orders. Just say the word."
"All right, all right, you old flame, no need to get all sentimental." Yao Lao waved dismissively and chuckled. "You've come back to life, but I haven't yet. Save your thanks for later."
"Haha! You're right!" Tianhuo Zunzhe stroked his beard and laughed heartily. Clearly, regaining a body had left him a bit emotional. Looking at the teacher and student before him, he added with a grin, "I'll stand guard outside for you."
Once he left, Xiao Yan carefully retrieved the materials prepared for Yao Lao. If Tianhuo Zunzhe had seen them, he might've spat blood from sheer envy. Compared to what was used for him, these materials were simply on another level.
The essence blood came from a Dou Zun-level flame lizardman. The Bone Fusion Pill was an eight-grade pill capable of triggering five-colored Pill Lightning. As for the physical body? A Dou Zun-level corpse—specifically, the very corpse of Tianhuo Zunzhe himself that Xiao Yan had salvaged earlier.
Of course, out of caution from his past life, Xiao Yan still left hidden measures in all three ingredients—not out of distrust for Yao Lao, but as the saying goes, "Better safe than sorry."
Watching Xiao Yan check the materials with precision, Yao Lao couldn't help but voice his concern. "Why don't you take a break before continuing?"
"No need. It didn't cost me much energy." Xiao Yan waved nonchalantly. With his current strength and his evolved Earth-level High-rank Flame Mantra, the drain was minimal. Besides, he had prepared extra pills in his storage ring for just such a situation.
"This is way easier than I imagined," Yao Lao murmured with a sigh.
"If you think it's easy, teacher, I could always give you a special process," Xiao Yan smirked. "When I revive you, I could dramatically shout—'Rise again, my old—'"
"You brat!" Before he could finish, Yao Lao flicked him hard on the forehead. "Your wings have grown tough—you even dare tease your teacher now."
"Hehe…" Xiao Yan rubbed his head sheepishly. Then his expression turned serious again. "Alright, teacher. Everything's ready. Time to start the process."
Yao Lao nodded, his eyes shining with emotion. After all these years… he was finally going to experience what it meant to have a body again.
With the previous trial run under his belt, Xiao Yan was much more adept this time. Even so, the time required exceeded both their expectations.
Perhaps it was the superior materials… or perhaps because Yao Lao was stronger than Tianhuo Zunzhe in the first place… whatever the case, this second refinement took over twice as long. If Xiao Yan hadn't been a nine-star Dou Zong already, and if he hadn't stocked up on recovery pills, he might not have made it through.
Finally, once Yao Lao's soul fully merged with the new body, Xiao Yan breathed a deep sigh of relief and sat down cross-legged to recover his depleted Dou Qi while waiting for his teacher to awaken.
He had done everything he could.
The rest… was up to Yao Lao.
