Within the Magic Beast Mountain Range, nestled deep in a small valley rich in elemental energy, a girl in white robes sat quietly beside a pill furnace. She carefully poured a freshly mixed powder into a small jade bottle. The scenery of the valley hadn't changed much since the last time Xiao Yan and the others had been here—some herbs that were once picked had regrown, giving the valley a renewed sense of vitality.
After securing the powder, Xiao Yixian reached into a bamboo basket to retrieve a fresh batch of herbs. But just as her fingers touched them, her body suddenly trembled. She knew that feeling—it was returning again. Even as she desperately tried to suppress it, her remaining rationality still couldn't resist the overwhelming desire brewing inside her.
With trembling hands, she took out a small bag of pitch-black powder and swallowed its contents. The moment it slid down her throat, an intense burning sensation surged through her internal organs. It was the pain of the poison activating. Yet from the depths of her being, an indescribable pleasure also rose, forcibly pushing away the pain.
Her body curled up instinctively, wracked with the agony of the poison's flare, while paradoxically indulging in the overwhelming ecstasy it brought. As she endured the torment, her cheeks flushed with a strange rainbow hue. That color made her feel hideous. She never wanted anyone to see her like this—especially not that black-clad youth.
During these episodes, the toxins surging within her also blurred her mind. Although her body had only recently awakened the Woeful Poison Body, the danger was still contained for now. But in time, she would no longer be able to control herself. When that moment came, she feared she would become a monster, hurting even those closest to her. It was for this reason she had chosen to leave Wu Tan City alone.
As the toxins continued to gnaw at her sanity, her mind drifted into unconsciousness. Yet just before she lost all awareness, she felt as though she had fallen into the embrace of a warm presence—so comforting she wanted to remain in it forever, to sleep without end.
About half an hour later, Xiao Yixian slowly awakened on her bed. The pain and pleasure from before had dissipated, but her heart was still weighed down by bitterness. She had once dreamed of becoming a healer or an alchemist—someone who could save lives. But fate had dealt her a cruel joke, gifting her such a monstrous talent.
Because of her terrifying body constitution, her life would forever be bound to poisons. She had once tried to abandon them, but every time the desire returned, her body would instinctively seek them out again—just like it had today.
After sitting in silent sorrow for a while, she tried to rise, only to suddenly realize something was wrong. 'Wasn't I outside just now? How did I end up in my room?' Her eyes darted around, and finally, she saw a black-clad youth seated quietly beside her bed. When he noticed her gaze, he smiled gently and asked, "You're awake? Do you want some water?"
"Xiao Yan? You... how are you here?"
"No choice. Someone decided to disappear without saying a word, so I had no choice but to come looking for you." Xiao Yan shrugged, his tone tinged with helplessness. "At first I thought you'd gone back to the Cloud Empire. I searched around there but didn't find you. Then I suddenly remembered this valley, so I came to check. And surprise—it worked."
"You... you touched me just now?" Her expression shifted as the thought struck her. She asked anxiously.
"Of course. How else was I supposed to bring you inside?" he replied matter-of-factly.
"You..." A look of panic flashed across her face. She quickly grabbed his arm and examined him carefully. Only after confirming there were no signs of poisoning did she breathe a sigh of relief. "Thank goodness you're okay..."
Her body, when unconscious, would be covered in lethal poison. Even the slightest touch could be fatal. That was why she looked so alarmed. Xiao Yan saw her fluster and let out a soft sigh. In a gentle voice, he said, "Come back with me, alright?"
Hearing this, her expression faltered, and she quickly shook her head. "I can't... I..."
"It's just the Woeful Poison Body. What's the big deal?" Xiao Yan interrupted her softly. "You don't need to leave me because of it."
"You... how do you know?" Her body trembled slightly, staring at him in disbelief as his words pierced right to the truth.
"Have you forgotten? I'm an alchemist, and a pretty good one with poisons too. It's not strange that I'd recognize it." He raised his hand and gently patted her head. "Besides, I've been keeping an eye on this kind of thing for a while."
"Then you should also know how this ends for someone like me, right?" A bitter smile tugged at her lips. "I'll keep taking poisons until I lose all reason. I'll become a monster, a mass murderer feared by all. In the end, I'll only bring disaster to everyone around me..."
"So what?" Xiao Yan reached out, gently wiping the black powder smudged at the corner of her lips. "As long as I'm here, I won't let that happen."
"No, you don't understand!" she shook her head, her voice trembling. Since discovering her Woeful Poison Body, she had read countless ancient texts, seen all the tales of tragedy linked to it. She knew all too well the horrors that awaited her. Every single previous bearer of the Woeful Poison Body had died in misery, consumed by madness, their legacies nothing but destruction.
"Xiao Yixian! Calm down first!" Seeing her growing agitation, Xiao Yan gripped her shoulders firmly and spoke sternly. His voice carried a trace of soul force, which immediately helped her regain a bit of composure. He looked into her reddened eyes, let out a sigh, and said, "Do you know what I've been doing these past few years?"
"..."
She didn't know why he suddenly brought that up, but she still shook her head instinctively.
"The Woeful Poison Body may be one of the most terrifying physiques in the world, but it's not entirely without a solution." Xiao Yan said, his tone calm. "These past few years, I've been looking for a way to suppress and control it. And thankfully, the heavens didn't let me down. I've gathered all the necessary materials."
"You... what did you say?" Her expression froze, clearly caught off guard. "You found a way to control it?"
"I was going to surprise you with it," he sighed. "But then you ran off, almost wasting all my effort."
"But that's... impossible. All the records I've read say..." she murmured in disbelief.
"Those records are outdated." He smiled faintly. "Trust me. I'll help you suppress your Woeful Poison Body. I won't let you become the kind of person you're afraid of being."
Xiao Yixian stared at him blankly. In that moment, the poisonous fog clouding her heart began to dissipate. Perhaps, just perhaps, if the one standing before her was Xiao Yan, then everything might truly be different.
