After spending another half a month on Ancient Dragon Island, Xiao Yan finally escaped the clutches of tenderness. When he left the island, the looks others gave him were as complex as they could get. After all... he had been holed up in Zi Yan's chambers the entire time. Anyone with half a brain could guess what they were doing.
It was only because Xiao Yan had saved Ancient Dragon Island from danger multiple times, and because continuing the Dragon Emperor bloodline was a matter of great importance, that the elders said nothing. Otherwise, formal complaints would've long been filed. Even so, Xiao Yan earned himself a new nickname on the island—the alluring calamity to nations, while Zi Yan went down in the history of the Ancient Void Dragon Clan as one of the few Dragon Emperors obsessed with beauty.
After leaving Ancient Dragon Island, Xiao Yan didn't return to Starfall Pavilion. Instead, he changed direction midway and flew toward another location—the Peak of Falling Star, the very last place he had visited before his death in his previous life.
Stepping onto the Peak once again, Xiao Yan was overcome by a sense of familiarity laced with change. In his past life, his heart had been consumed by resentment. All he wanted was power—enough to take revenge. But in this life, his heart was much fuller. Recalling his cherished companions, Xiao Yan couldn't help but smile faintly. Then he put away his emotions and set off toward the summit of the Peak.
In his previous life, he had been a peak powerhouse, already with one foot into the Dou Di Rank. He possessed the qualifications to attempt a breakthrough. Yet every attempt felt like something vital was missing—some kind of key energy. Thus, each time, he failed.
To find that missing component, Xiao Yan had nearly traveled across the entire Dou Qi Continent. It was only here, at the Peak of Falling Star, that he had discovered the faintest trace of it. But it was also here that he encountered Hun Dai'er, leading to everything that followed.
According to Xiao Yan's speculation, the ancient cave mansion of Emperor Tuoshe likely held a crucial element to advancing to the Dou Di Rank. Otherwise, the Hun Clan wouldn't have gone to such lengths to gather the ancient jades. In his past life, the final piece had been destroyed by his own hand. In this life, collecting them all again would be nearly impossible. So Xiao Yan could only focus on other paths.
Upon reaching the summit, he released his perfected Heavenly Rank soul power, hoping once more to sense that mysterious energy. But no matter how deeply he searched, he couldn't detect even the faintest hint of it. His face darkened as a troubling thought took shape in his mind...
Only two people in this world knew about the existence of the energy at the Peak of Falling Star: himself, and Hun Dai'er. Now that the energy was gone, the only explanation was that Hun Dai'er had already taken it. After all, he had only arrived in the Central Plains two years ago, while she had always been nearby. It made perfect sense that she would retrieve it first.
What Xiao Yan could guess, Hun Dai'er could naturally guess as well. They both understood just how critical that energy was. If obtained, even a peak-level Dou Sheng could have the chance to ascend to the true Dou Di Rank! And within the Hun Clan, there just so happened to be one person who fit that condition—Hun Tiandi, the clan leader.
However, Xiao Yan wasn't concerned that Hun Dai'er would hand the energy over to Hun Tiandi. If anything, she would guard it even more tightly than he would. She would never let Hun Tiandi find out. Her ambitions were vast, and Hun Tiandi was a major obstacle in her path. Otherwise, in their past life, she wouldn't have approached him, proposing they work together to eliminate Hun Tiandi.
After reflecting for a moment, Xiao Yan suddenly narrowed his eyes. Thanks to his eyes refined through Heavenly Flame tempering and his perfected soul strength, he sharply sensed the presence of faint black motes in the air. When these motes landed on him, they even tried to devour the Dou Qi within his body.
"Void Swallowing Flame, huh..." Detecting the black specks, Xiao Yan let out a cold chuckle. Crimson demonic markings flared across his body as he violently expelled the foreign motes. He then raised his gaze toward a patch of empty sky and spoke calmly, "Since you're here, come out."
As his voice fell, the sky darkened as black clouds gathered. A black-robed middle-aged man materialized from within and stepped down from the clouds, walking through the air as if on solid ground. He gazed at Xiao Yan with a faint smirk.
"No wonder the young miss specifically named you as a target. You've got a sharp sense for danger."
"So it's you... Hun Xuzi." Xiao Yan narrowed his eyes slightly. He was somewhat familiar with this man—a top-tier alchemist within the Hun Clan. His status surpassed even Hun Miesheng, the Hall of Souls master, and his strength had already reached the level of a Seven-Star Dou Sheng!
"You actually recognize me?" Hun Xuzi raised a brow in surprise. Clearly, he hadn't expected Xiao Yan to call him out so casually.
"Lying in wait—classic move from her playbook. Old-fashioned, but effective." Xiao Yan murmured. He realized he had been outmaneuvered by Hun Dai'er once again. After taking the energy from this place, she had clearly anticipated that he would come and had arranged for someone to ambush him.
"Before we begin, let me ask something. Your young miss may hold a high position, but could she really command someone like you to guard this place?" Xiao Yan asked coolly. Within the Hun Clan, Hun Xuzi only answered to Hun Tiandi and the Void Swallowing Flame. While Hun Dai'er had influence, she clearly hadn't gained full control of the clan yet.
"She said you carry the key to subduing the Purifying Demonic Lotus Flame." Hun Xuzi's eyes narrowed, black light churning within them. Although his strength was exceptional, he still coveted the Purifying Demonic Lotus Flame—a Heavenly Flame born of heaven and earth. When Hun Dai'er told him that the person coming here might hold the key to taming it, he had surprisingly agreed to guard this location himself for such a long time.
"So that's it…" Xiao Yan sighed. Hun Dai'er really was something else. This entire scheme was a textbook case of getting something for nothing—and she had nearly succeeded. If not for his numerous fortuitous encounters, escaping this setup would've been incredibly difficult. But alas, the world didn't run on "what ifs."
He lifted his head, eyes fixed on Hun Xuzi, whose body was now shrouded in black flame.
"It seems like you've got a sub-flame of the Void Swallowing Flame on you. Perfect. I happen to be interested in it. Today, I'll be taking that too."
