Chapter 232 - Chapter 232: A Complicated State of Mind

After leaving Hun Dai'er's office, Xiao Yan once again assumed the appearance of Hun Xuzi. His expression was so dark and unsightly that many of the people who saw him instinctively assumed he'd just been scolded by the young miss. No one dared provoke him—afraid they'd become a convenient target for his anger.

Once back in Hun Xuzi's residence, Xiao Yan finally released his disguise and collapsed into a chair. He was beginning to regret infiltrating the Hun Clan—not because of anything Hun Dai'er said, but because he harbored a deep-rooted disgust for the Hun Clan itself. Just staying here made his killing intent surge to its peak, and yet, bound by the need to keep up appearances, he couldn't act on it.

"This damn place... I really don't want to stay even a second longer," Xiao Yan sighed. "Disgusting place. Disgusting people."

"Master... it seems like you know that woman named Hun Dai'er?" a soft voice chimed in. Xiao Yao emerged from within Xiao Yan's body and curled up in his arms, asking carefully, "Did something happen between you two…?"

"Mm." Xiao Yan nodded lightly.

In his previous life, Hun Dai'er had been his childhood companion. As a child, she had lived as a guest in the Xiao Family—just like Xun Er did now. At the time, Xiao Yan's feelings for her were purely sibling-like—just an older brother watching over a younger sister, with nothing inappropriate.

What truly changed things was the period after his Dou Qi was crippled. The people he had defeated in the past all returned to mock him. Former friends kicked him while he was down. Humiliated and despairing, he fled from Wu Tan City, only to be hunted down—by assassins sent by his own father.

At his moment of greatest despair, a white-haired woman descended from the skies and saved him, killing his pursuers and rescuing him from certain death. He never thought he'd see her again. Yet there she was—his childhood playmate—appearing when he needed her most.

In the depths of despair, people often idolize their saviors as gods. Xiao Yan was no different.

With her help, he recovered the Dou Qi that had been destroyed. They spent some time together, and during that period, he slowly fell for her. But just as he regained his strength, she once again vanished without a trace.

Before leaving, she had leaned in close and whispered softly in his ear:

"I like you."

It was only then that Xiao Yan realized his feelings for her had long since shifted into something deeper.

To find her again—and to grow stronger—Xiao Yan began wandering through the Jia Ma Empire. But the human heart is fickle. Along the way, he suffered countless betrayals and wounds. People he had saved turned against him. The pain of misplaced kindness gradually sealed his heart.

And then, she appeared again.

She comforted him in his pain, guided him through his first true kill—of someone who had done him no wrong. She had calmly stood by his side, teaching him every step as he wiped out an entire village. As he watched life fade from those eyes, he felt no fear or panic.

Taking a life was so easy. Just raise the blade... and the world goes silent.

He got what he wanted. And in the terrified stares of those who witnessed it, he realized a cruel truth: In this world, kindness is worthless. Only absolute strength commands respect—and fear.

He wanted to share this new understanding with her—but she vanished once again. He searched desperately for her, for the girl who had once offered him her hand in the darkest night. Perhaps she was the only light he had ever seen in that abyss.

He returned to Wu Tan City after killing the two brothers who had once betrayed him. There, he witnessed his own father sacrificing their entire clan in a bid to break through. After killing the last blood relative he had in the world, Xiao Yan sat atop the corpses for a whole night.

When the sun rose, he burned the Xiao Family to the ground—and left, carrying with him a single fragment of jade taken from his father.

Love, hatred… it all ended with that fire. From that moment on, he lived for himself.

He traveled to the Chu Yun Empire, crossed paths with the infamous Heavenly Poison Woman, and climbed to the peak of the Yunlan Sect—burning that so-called sacred land to ashes. His name spread across the Northwest like wildfire.

Everyone had heard of him. They said he was ruthless, heartless, a monster who would even kill his own father. A true villain.

He accepted those titles.

After countless trials, he made his way to Central Plains. There, he finally saw the woman whose silhouette had haunted him for years.

But what awaited him was an inescapable trap.

"No need to pretend anymore," she had said coldly. "I never liked you. Everything was a lie. Saving you was nothing more than a calculated move. You were just a pitiful pawn with some potential."

Her cruel words and cold eyes shattered whatever was left of Xiao Yan's already broken heart. All those sweet moments, all the warmth she once showed him—turned out to be lies.

Even someone like Xiao Yan, who had grown numb to betrayal, felt a bone-deep exhaustion unlike anything he had ever known.

It wasn't just his body—it was his soul that was tired.

What if everything you ever fought for... was a lie?

Xiao Yan made his decision quickly: he would kill.

Even Hun Dai'er had underestimated his potential. Though their battle ended in Xiao Yan's defeat, her elite guards were all buried there. And most importantly, she failed to capture him. Not even with several Dou Zun-level experts joining the ambush.

After that, Xiao Yan launched his most furious counterattack.

He razed branch after branch of the Hall of Souls. Despite sending countless strong fighters to hunt him down, they never managed to capture him. Instead, he grew stronger with each battle—until even Dou Shengs could no longer stop him.

And when he finally refined the Purifying Demonic Lotus Flame, his name resounded across the continent.

People began calling him:

The Wrathful Demon Saint—Xiao Yan.

He and Hun Dai'er had fought, allied, betrayed, and saved each other.

The sides changed—but the bond of entanglement remained.

Their most perfect collaboration was when they slaughtered the former clan leader Hun Tiandi together. She became the next clan head. He got what he wanted.

Now, they were about to replicate that perfect cooperation once more.

As for what came after?

That would all depend on whether it ended with a staff strike—or a burning rod.
