The clock was ticking. Five weeks left, maybe six if they got lucky. Aidan had to finish the Crimson Typhoon overhaul before the next monster clawed its way out of the ocean, or everything they'd worked for would be meaningless. Outside the Shatterdome, the world was already moving on his Arc Reactor designs - countries scrambling to replace their aging nuclear plants, corporations fighting over civilian applications, politicians making speeches about humanity's bright future.

They have no idea how close we are to losing everything.

A month later, the transformation was complete.

Marshal Thompson led the procession into Bay Three, and the sight that greeted them stopped conversation dead. The other Jaeger bays were industrial nightmares - exposed pipes everywhere, sparks flying from welding torches, the constant smell of hot metal and hydraulic fluid. Bay Three looked like it belonged in a museum.

Clean walls. Organized equipment. No chaos whatsoever.

And standing in the center of that impossible cleanliness was Crimson Typhoon, completely transformed.

The elevator platform rose slowly from ground level, giving everyone time to really see what Aidan had built. The Jaeger didn't just look different - it looked dangerous. Sleek where it used to be bulky, predatory where it used to be defensive, like someone had taken a war machine and turned it into something that actually enjoyed killing.

"The hands are different," Stacker Pentecost observed, studying the razor-sharp talons that had replaced the original circular saw blades. Each claw caught the bay lights and threw them back like knives.

"Chrome-tipped," Aidan explained, trying to keep the pride out of his voice. "Hardest metal we've got access to. Those claws will cut through Kaiju armor like it's not even there. I also moved the IB-22 plasma cannon from the third arm to the left palm. Now the claws can superheat themselves for better penetration, or the pilot can fire plasma bursts at point-blank range."

The old spinning saws had been brutal but slow. These new claws were surgical instruments designed for murder.

Stacker nodded, but his expression was troubled. Too much offense, not enough defense - that was written all over his face.

"The outer armor looks the same," Mako Mori said quietly from behind them, consulting her technical readouts.

"It is. Titanium alloy, same as before." Aidan saw the question forming and answered it preemptively. "Yeah, I could've upgraded to something heavier, but that would've killed our speed advantage. This thing's built to hit hard and fast, not to take punishment. The Arc Reactor's got enough juice to keep us airborne for short bursts - adding weight would ruin that."

He turned to face the Wei Tang triplets directly. "You guys are gonna be faster and stronger than any Jaeger team in history. But you're also gonna be more vulnerable. One good hit in the wrong place, and you're done. This design is all about killing the other guy before he touches you."

"We can handle it," Cheung Wei said immediately, his brothers nodding in sync. "Speed and precision - that's always been our style anyway."

"Good answer," Marshal Thompson said with genuine approval.

The elevator continued upward, bringing them level with the chest assembly. What had been a heavily armored torso was now dominated by a massive triangular energy core - the second-generation Arc Reactor, glowing with barely contained power.

"Jesus," someone whispered.

The reactor wasn't just a power source. Positioned front and center like that, it was a weapon. Get grabbed by a Kaiju in close combat, fire the chest repulsors, and the monster would learn real fast why that was a bad idea. The Wei Tang triplets were practically vibrating with excitement, clearly dying to take this thing for a test run.

"The arm actuators are completely new," Aidan continued as the platform circled around. "Original design used diesel pistons for muscle movement. I replaced those with integrated energy-driven systems." The armor plating opened automatically, revealing massive hydraulic assemblies that looked like they could punch through a battleship. "Direct power from the reactor means way better flexibility and response time. But here's the fun part."

He gestured, and another panel slid aside to show an enormous piston mechanism running the length of the forearm. "When you need to finish something fast, the claws retract and lock together. The whole arm becomes a spear, and this baby drives it home. Energy storage releases all at once - you're basically firing a ballistic missile with your fist."

The tour moved to Crimson Typhoon's back. "Original design had basic thrusters for balance adjustments. I turned them into actual flight systems." The back armor separated, revealing twin jet assemblies that covered nearly the entire rear surface.

"You seriously expect a thousand-ton robot to fly?" Dr. Newton sounded skeptical, though his eyes were wide with fascination.

"Short distances, yeah. Maybe thirty seconds of sustained flight before the power draw gets dangerous." Aidan shrugged. "I wanted to add glider wings for longer airtime, but that would've added too much mass. This way, you can jump, dodge, get vertical when you need to. It's not Iron Man, but it's better than being stuck on the ground."

They reached the third arm - Crimson Typhoon's distinctive feature. "This used to mount a plasma cannon. Now it's got a nuclear-excitation laser." The weapon looked like something from a science fiction nightmare. "When you're fighting in close, use the main arms to control the target. Third arm puts a laser through its brain. Clean, fast, efficient."

The rest of the tour covered smaller modifications - upgraded sensors, reinforced joint assemblies, improved neural interface systems. But the real story was in what they'd already seen. Crimson Typhoon had been transformed from a defensive fighter into a precision killing instrument.

"This is a completely different machine," Thompson said as they exited the bay. "I don't think there's a Kaiju out there that could survive a fight with it."

"Maybe," Aidan replied carefully. "But we gave up a lot of defensive capability to get this much offense. This design is betting everything on speed and lethality. We kill them fast, or they kill us fast. It's gonna come down to who lands the first real blow."

"Wait, where's your support team?" Newton looked around the empty bay in confusion. "How'd you do all this work by yourself?"

"Dr. Ryan built an artificial intelligence," Mako explained. "The whole facility is automated now. He doesn't need a human crew."

Newton's jaw actually dropped. "When the hell did you build an AI? I've been down in the lab for like three weeks and apparently I missed the robot uprising!"

"About a month ago. Otherwise, there's no way I could've finished this in two months." Aidan tried to sound casual about it, but the truth was that Tuantuan had been absolutely critical to getting everything done on time.

"Did you eat some kind of magic pill or something?" Newton was genuinely baffled. "Because seriously, this is insane. The Arc Reactor was revolutionary enough, and now you're telling me you also just casually invented AI on the side?"

"Haha, if he ate a magic pill, he'd be flying around shooting lightning by now," Thompson laughed, and the others joined in. The stress of the past month was finally catching up with everyone, and the laughter felt good.

But Aidan noticed the way Thompson looked at him afterward - like he wasn't entirely joking about the magic pill theory. And honestly, from their perspective, what he'd accomplished probably did look impossible.

If they only knew the half of it.

After sending the inspection team away, Aidan turned to the Wei Tang triplets. They were already suited up in their pilot gear, practically bouncing with anticipation.

"Alright," he said. "Let's see if this monster can actually do what I promised."
