Chapter 7 - Chapter 7 – The Game of Masks

The morning sun filtered through the floor-to-ceiling windows of Ethan's penthouse, but the light did little to warm the cold atmosphere inside. He stood by the window, staring out at the sprawling city beneath him, the weight of Isabel's revelations pressing heavily on his mind.

Liam Graves—a name that had once inspired trust and loyalty—now dripped with betrayal. Every memory involving Liam twisted painfully as Ethan replayed their interactions in his head, searching for the moment the knife was buried in his back.

The door chimed softly. Charlotte entered, her presence filling the room like a storm brewing on the horizon. She wore a tailored black dress that hugged her curves, and the faint scent of jasmine trailed behind her.

"I heard about Liam," she said, voice low and calculated.

Ethan turned, eyes hard. "You knew?"

Her smile was a razor's edge. "I suspected. But what I'm more interested in is what you're going to do about it."

He paced. "I can't believe I was blind. How deep does this go?"

Charlotte's gaze darkened. "Deep enough that we need new allies—and new strategies."

Before Ethan could respond, the intercom buzzed. Victor's voice filtered through, calm yet authoritative. "Ethan, we need to talk. Now."

The private conference room was cold, sterile. Victor stood by the window, his back to Ethan. When he turned, his face was unreadable.

"I assume you've seen the files Isabel gave you."

Ethan nodded. "Yes. Liam's betrayal cuts deep."

Victor sighed. "It's worse than you think. Liam's been working for someone higher up—someone who wants Lu Corporations dismantled from the inside."

Ethan's jaw clenched. "Who?"

Victor hesitated, then pulled out a photo—a shadowed figure with a blurred face.

"This is the puppet master pulling the strings. We don't have a name, but they have influence everywhere."

The room seemed to close in. Ethan felt the trap tightening.

"Then we fight back," he said, voice low and fierce.

Victor nodded. "But carefully. One wrong move and we lose everything."

Later that night, Ethan met with Isabel again. They poured over documents and decrypted emails, piecing together a web of corruption, deceit, and dangerous alliances.

Isabel looked up, eyes meeting his. "We need to be careful who we trust. Even among our closest allies, there could be enemies."

Ethan reached out, brushing a stray lock of hair from her face. "And what about us? Can I trust you?"

Her breath hitched. "Trust is earned, Ethan. But I want to be on your side."

Their fingers lingered, a charged silence filling the space between them.

The following day, a new player entered the game. Sophia Reyes—a fierce and enigmatic woman with a reputation as a corporate shark and an unshakable loyalty to whoever paid her. Ethan encountered her at a charity gala, where her eyes locked onto his with an intensity that suggested secrets of her own.

Sophia approached him, her voice velvet smooth. "Mr. Lu, I hear you're looking for allies. Perhaps I can be of assistance."

Ethan's smile was cautious but intrigued. "And what do you want in return?"

"Let's just say, I have a vested interest in seeing your enemies fall."

Their conversation was interrupted by the arrival of Liam Graves himself—alive and well, his smile cold as ice.

"You're wasting your time," Liam sneered. "The real game is just beginning."
