Chapter 84 - Chapter 80: The First Funeral Fire

Seraphina's POV

"Mother, why do they sleep in the fire?"

Lyric's small hand tapped my blanket as he looked up at me, his eyes were really shining and his voice was innocent, but it was very sharp like a blade.

"They don't sleep, little wolf, they always return to the moon or to the stars but it's the fire that carries them to the place."

He frowned, his tiny brows knitting together as if trying to understand death the way grown wolves did. I wished he never had to.

The fortress courtyard was silent, we were just hearing only the crackle of dry wood and bodies wrapped in cloth laid gently upon it. Warriors, priestesses, servants and wolves who had fallen during Elira's last assault. 

Their families stood in rows, some were weeping openly, some were only staring, grief was in every line of their faces.
